I worked in a cruise ship as a cook for 4 years (with intervals of course) and it was great to make money, but I wouldn't never go back to it, not even if they gave me a chef's position and payment. lol it's tough, but as I live in a third world country and was making money in dollars all I did was read and avoid expending in my time off, I came back and bought myself a house and my dad a new car.

Cooks on cruise ships get one day off a week, and even though they get to see the world, 16+ hour days kill the desire to do anything but sleep in their off time. @@lifeischeesy The pay is generally fantastic for any job like that where you do 14+ hr days daily, sometimes with no daynoff for weeks or months. Not everyone has the mental or physical strength for it, but mental is by far the deciding factor above physical. You work 14+ hr days, for 2months STRAIGHT and you're likely making more than a lot of folks make in a whole year doing some no effort job. I worked so hard one year on this really rough production. 7 days straight wasn't uncommon but 6 was the norm. Long 12 hr min days. I ended up banking like 2900-4400 per week for that month and a half it was the roughest. You don't care about the money while you're exhausted, but that's good lol. Once you're finally rested and you see you made over 10 grand in a single month, you don't care that you felt like dying the whole time 😂

I struggle to believe a cruise ship spends over a month at sea and never has the time to dock or just have a smaller boat pull up to swap the crew every 2 or 3 weeks. But every time my teachers get upset with me and act like it's a choice so it's easier to just suffer at school than stay at home. It's very sad how the rules and stuff don't consider/care about people that just can't afford to get sick.

@@agereartist3763 That's awful, I wish people were more empathetic, & its totally unacceptable for your school to think sickness is a moral failing (its self*less* to take time off being sick, some people are just unlucky to get sick more than others & they might get more severely sick too, its often down to genes & totally beyond our control - its not like anyone _wants_ to get sick!). I remember saying to my friend 'I detest taking time off for sickness because its so horrible for me - I'd always prefer to work (when I used to be able to work)' but she was the complete opposite, saying getting a cold gave her a mini break! There are actually places in the world where it can be harder to provide for your family within your own country as opposed to working in another country and sending money home (many countries have a better currency than PH Peso, it’s very hard to earn a living there). You find a lot of Filipinos as domestic workers in other countries, even neighboring countries to PH like Hong Kong; a common example being the caregiver of another household’s children and cooking and cleaning within their home. They cannot just leave their job whenever they want, most of their money earned if not all are sent to their family (if they are provided necessities in their work) because they are not paid a lot typically. Still more than what they would get at home. I don’t blame you for not knowing for what it’s like for other people in the world, but don’t be so quick to assume things about those you don’t know anything about.

People don’t understand that the workers on the ship are working 20 hour days. They don’t get off the ship and explore like we are able to so, while they are traveling to these destinations, they aren’t able to enjoy them. They have to deal with rude people who probably didn’t tip (because you can take them off at the end of your trip) and they are on the ship for 7 months at a time. You have to always have a smile on your face and people think they get to eat the food that we enjoy and that is not true for all cruise lines. My cousin worked on a cruise ship right before Covid. She was very homesick and wanted to come home after about 3 months. She was overworked and rarely got a proper day off, the literally split her ‘day off’ over two days so she would only get a few hours free before having to work again. She was in the spa and spent days booking people in only for the manager to give all of her bookings to the other girls who just sat on their a** all day even though she had spent so long getting people to actually come for a treatment. The food they get isn’t the same as guests, which is something she was told by someone who was going around recruiting while she was still back here training. She lost so much weight and was so emotionally and physically exhausted she just wanted to come home. As she was under contact there was no way she could come home early, but then Covid happened and obviously it was put on hold and after a month of being confined to a tiny cabin where she saw no daylight, she came home. I have the utmost respect for anyone working for a cruise line - it’s not all as great as it seems. She was under the impression she would be able to visit the beautiful countries she was going to but in the 4 months she was there (3 if we don’t include when she wasn’t allowed to leave her room) she actually got off the ship and was able to explore 4 times! It’s so sad because they take advantage of people from third world countries who have no choice and they can seemingly get away with the awful working conditions.

@@Yeshua_is_king_2024 I think in the 3 months she was there she earnt $10K, converted to just over £8K excluding taxes in the UK. I guess it’s kind of subjective of if that’s good pay, because that’s obvs a lot of money, however when you think she worked 12-14 hour days every week with 1 day off i don’t think it was anything too fabulous, especially as she didn’t even get to experience any real ‘perks’ of the job ie. seeing the places she was travelling to. But had she been at home during that time, she wouldv’t earnt more but had all the over heads such as rent, fuel, groceries etc. I do think it is down to who you work for and in what department, it’s a stereotype that the beauty or spa team can be a bit snooty but they are paid the highest (that’s what she said), which makes sense that the people she worked with weren’t very nice and the manager gave away her bookings to the people who didn’t try as hard as her. EDIT - forgot to add, she did also work on comission and she found it really hard to sell because after coming from a relaxing treatment she didn’t want to be shoving down peoples throat to spend $200 on a face cream after they had spent that on a massage. So they did get a portion of what they sold in products thought it wasn’t a high percentage.

I worked on ships 25 years. I always loved the long schedules, and it's a choice to be there. There is absolutely zero cost of living while you're on board. When you're home, you will never be called or disturbed. You want to go on a 6 week road trip with your kids.....no problem. You can.

I had a piano teacher who actually played the piano on Carnival Cruise lines. He did it for a very long time because of how much he enjoyed it. It payed well too. He told me they treated him well and got a very nice cabin and would stay on for months at a time. It is very much a step up from other workers who are far from their home countries. I’ve always known Carnival, but I think they are more known for treating their staff better than other cruise lines, from MY experience. I’m surprised by how insanely extravagant the one you just showed is.

I was a port agent in AK, I can say I WILL NEVER GO ON A CRUISE based on how they treat crew. I was 21 and almost had deport a 19yr old Ecuadorian, I radioed the captain and he told me to just send him home however I need to. I ended up convincing Borders and Customs as well as the cruise line to escort him via aircraft to the cruises next destination.

@Nathan Davies ah yes, that isn't a privileged point of view at all "their living conditions aren't as comfortable as mine, so they should be happy being abused by their shit employers and wiping my arse for a wage that would be under the poverty line in my own country." Are you a big fan of Amazon depots and apple factories? Because I bet most of the people working in those places don't have better options. I'm pretty sure your country has a pretty bad history with "employers" abusing their "employees" because they have no other choices.

That sock on that light can catch fire. That's why lampshades are suspended above the light bulbs and sockets, so there is no contact with the hear and electricity. But of course, that's common sense. You can get opaque bulbs, lower watts or mini lampshades with metal loops that clip onto the glass of the lightbulb while suspending the shade away.

I saved money several years ago for a cruise that I went on in 2019 and did some research beforehand and found out all the stuff about the crew by chance. So I made double-sure that I was kind and courteous to every crew person I encountered. Had a guy thank me for treating him so well during my stay because, apparently, people treat the crew really shitty for no reason. Getting short with them, yelling at them, stereotypical entitled tourist bullshit and it really made me feel for them. They're just doing their jobs, and people think they can just treat them like trash... Absolutely reprehensible!
