I LOVED your episode on the nantucket red pants!! I actually learned something!! I found your channel by looking at a fountain pen review. I’ve now bought three pens that you spoke highly of. I love my Egyptomania! Thanks. You also inspired me to take up journaling. My question is, who do you recommend for custom leather bound journal books? And I will be at the DCP show. Looking forward to saying hello

Brother Tim, this is hilarious, I literally paid for my second 146 flex on the sentence of you affirming the 146 over the 149, I was on the fence about a 149, but I figured the flex is what I want, it's a nice contrast to the mag 600 as it's much stiffer. My first 146 flex ran into issues, I will have it repaired if I get to meet a real nib master. I hope Hiren on Magna Carta can fix it once he has my working 146 flex to A/B with, provided he has some time, such a cool guy.

There are 3 pocket fountain pens that I would love for you to try and give your thoughts. 1 - Big i Design EDC fountain pen, 2 - Ensso Pocket Piuma fountain pen, 3 - Namisu Nova pocket fountain pen. Also if I am not wrong, I do not believe you ever made a video on a fountain pen made of ULTEM, which seems to be a popular and tough new material for fountain pens.

Another interesting live stream HJ. The title sounds like the phrase used in the Highlander movie, and saying "one pen to rule them all" is somewhat of an obscure reference to Lord of the Rings and the one ring. I have a tip for you about that Majohn X1. I have one that I replaced the EF nib with an F nib (it wasn't easy), and now it's a fantastic writing pen. Yes, when any time you screw the cap on or off either end it can be really tricky if you go strait to screwing it on. If you get the cap and body threads close to each other then turn counterclockwise until you feel it click, then you've found the start of the threads & it makes it easier to screw on. It's harder to explain than it is to just do it - it takes a little practice. I've had a Wing Sung 630 for some time, and it's a really nice writing pen, but recently I finally succumbed - I found a 90's vintage Mont Blanc 149 and have been using it for about a week now. And yes, I do feel a difference however subtle it may be.

I have at least 6 journals and have yet to write a single entry as I just don’t know where to start. So if you have any suggestions on where to start?? ideas to journal about ?? That would be great.

Sure! I think that this is one of the most Challenging things. I usually start with the trivial to put my life in context: what I did that day, how I felt about it, what’s on my mind. My biggest journaling prompt is to ask myself who I want to be and what I want to accomplish with my life. Then, I make sure I am on that path. I also sometimes recount memories from my past to reflect on where I am now. I hope this helps! I did a video on this very subject coming at the end of August.

Hello Tim, I very much like your idea of touching on other topics like paper, and for me this comes at the right time 😅 I am considering (well a bit more than considering) studying again (I’ve your age) and I was trying to source TR 52gsm A4 notebook for my course summaries and exercises and so far I’ve come only across Rhodia/Clairefontaine/Midori in this format, great paper, but I find them too thick. My ideal would be the 400pp notebook from Galen Leather in A4 but it does not exist. I’d love to hear from you if you have an idea of a dark place where I could find such notebooks 😂 As always great live (even if I am watching them after the facts).

I have been using the Cross Townsend fountain pen as my one and only daily pen for 25 years. Writes incredibly smooth and has a Medium 18k NIB. I’ve become curious lately about trying the Montblanc Classique with Medium NIB and ordered one direct. Hopefully I will like it as much as the Townsend.

I would like to know what are the pocket pens of the bankers in your world Tim. I was surrounded by senior Executives that were often carrying gel pens and a few once an ADM or Deputy Ministers (American Secretary of….) would grab a pilot disposable fountain pen or a Lamy, the elected folks liked the MB rollerball and ball points and only once did an Attorney General from NB tell me hey you swiped my pen. Turns out we both had Boheme’s in our pocket that day. But even if the Bic Crystal is in the financier pockets it would be sort of neat to see survey results in your travels and you could always share a picture of they had a unique pen, we do not need all video. My idol who was my DM in the 2006-2012 timeframe who was Privy Council Clerk eventually for PM Trudeau carried a pencil with HB lead and a newspaper he had nothing else in the attache case when I asked, « What do you carry when out of Ottawa? «

Hello HJ! Another absorbing and inspiring live stream! Very interesting that you are going to do a series on paper. That new Morris writing set looks very interesting! I managed to get the one in the box, like you showed during the video, but have not yet had a chance to use any of the stationery yet. VERY cool, though! Can't wait for the Hemingway and Safari videos, as well. It's funny, that's a pen I really had no interest in, and in fact, the first one I bought was part of the gift set, because I wanted a bottle of the Blackberry ink! THEN I wrote with it! Then I bought another one, then I bought the Aluminum one! They write FAR better than they look in my opinion. Although the Aluminum one is kind of spiffy, I must admit. Will be more Safari's in my future! My blue one with red clip is one of my go-to EDC pens. Have a great week!

The 'fins' on feeds, serve the purpose of catching an unfortunate blurp of ink, instead of dropping it on the paper. This works well enough at a start. Unfortunately, people, who unknowingly encounter this, often don't consume the ink drop in the fins before they're finished writing. They put on the cap, and then presumably the pen gets knocked around enough to have the ink loose on the inside of the cap, and then on the section, - messy next time the pen is used. The cure is to occasionally expel gas/air in systems that have a piston that can be repositionable, like converters or some piston pens like WS 618 or the Konrad. Then you never get a blurp. Pelikan and Montblanc don't have repositionable pistons, even so I have never had a blurp in my 149 or M800. Magic? Have you had a blurp in yours?
@HemingwayJones
2 ай бұрын
Hello My Friend! I have never had a burp in anything but the lever fill pens I have, oddly enough. I can see how the fins could trap it for a time! I have had catastrophic lever fill pen stomach issues! I have my M800 with me right now, coincidentally enough. Awesome pen. A pure joy!

You know I love Pilot Falcons. Recently I bought a metal burgundy fine. I’m surprised at how much I’ve come to love the heft. But the converter is a push button. I can’t think of how else to describe it. You push and the ink squirt up - like a fast suck. I push three times for a total fill. I wonder how long it will continue to work. It is definitely fun.

my one pen to rule them all is my lovely Sailor pro gear H-EF which I’ve inked w GvFC cobalt blue: if I had to let everything else go, this would be the last pen I’d ever willingly let go, oddly enough I found my last mp much harder: think I narrowed it down to my lovely Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel no.2 in navy w a 0.7mm lead, any of my Pentel P20X, my lovely Pentel Kerry Green Tea and Navy, or my wonderful Pentel Orenz w 0.3mm lead, I also love my Rotring600 and my Staedtler 925 35 0.3mm - which is 9mp’s ffs!; but there’s no doubt of my fp choice!:)

I also will chime in if only one fountain pen it would be a Sheaffer Targa (not the slim) all silver/chrome with a medium in laid nib from the 80’s. My grandma gifted one to me for graduation from my B.Comm. For her she spent a fortune for her on that steel nib pen in 1989 but it is the one pen in my safety deposit box the children know when I as the old man kick the bucket they need to not sell in the estate sale and let a grand child own it (if ever one arrives). For me allow me two pens and the other will be a MB 146 or maybe Visconti Opera Master LE.

Another good one, thanks. Yes, it was simpler when I had one pen and one ink: a 1960s Parker 45 and Sheaffer Scrip black ink. I still feel a little sheepish writing with different colored inks. But that would not be my one pen to rule them all. Probably my MB 147 Fine nib and my Pelikan M 800 Broad nib as co-regents. “One pen to rule them all, and with the dark ink Bind(er) them.” Richard Binder, of course!j

Also, your definition of a collector made me laugh. I’m a minimalist and I will only allow seven pens - but I do swap out and I definitely am obsessed- so I guess I will admit now to being a collector. But I can’t concede to pens being a hobby. Tools, yes. Perhaps at some point you can talk about the difference.

I look forward to the Lamy Safari video. A year ago, I had cheap generic Lamy Safari knockoffs. All or nibs and worked fine. I never thought I'd buy a Lamy (or a Kaweco). A year later, I now have two Safaris. I bought a Kewi Lilac Blackberry from a pen shop and a red one secondhand. I have two Lamy Studio Brushed Silver /Black bought secondhand. One came with a spare nib. I have a secondhand Lamy Imporium Gold Oblique . So, those knockoff Safaris, I had originally, have led me to the real brand of which I can say today I am a big fan. Interestingly, I think the knockoffs I started with can take Lamy nibs, so that might be a future project for my knockoffs. Interesting also what you say about number of pens. A year and a half ago, I had 3 Sheaffers and a Jinhao. Now I have approx 60 pens, plus 25 bottles of ink, plus ink samples and cartridges. I am happy with what I have and want to settle in to using them all. Some I have used much more than others, but I want to cycle through my collection. As for notebooks and paper, I reorganized everything and was surprised at how much I have. I am well-supplied for journaling and novel-writing and rewriting.
