It is funny that the 75 is almost a classic now. An engineer friend of mine who worked for Rover back in the day had a pre-production model as his company car many months before the car was released onto the market. It was so awesome having a car that no one else had or had even seen before. I have never been in a car that attracted so much attention. I drove it a lot so I would have been one of the very first people not employed by Rover to ever drive a 75.

I feel the same about my ZT - I had one in 2009 for 5 years, sold it due to the £400 a month fuel bills, got a diesel Focus.....had it 3 months but I just didn't 'feel' it, chopped it in for an MG6, great car but, just had to go back to a V6 ZT in 2017 where I felt at right at home. Still running that one, sold it to my son briefly and just had to buy it back when he went to the V8....no new car interests me (except maybe the Lotus Emira, but way too many digits in that price tag).

I have to agree! Had my 75 diesel for 6 years now. I know its going to get harder and harder to keep in on the road. Not due to normal ageing and wear and tear, I could deal with that. It's the way we are going to be forced off the road due to this emissions shit. This is not something I've ever had to consider in my years of driving. What do I do if my 75 needs a serious amount of money throwing at it? Is it worth it? Years ago I would have said hell yes! But now there is always the question of will I be forced off the road by the powers that be? Replace it? But like you say, with what exactly? Everything else is just a car!

As a owner of 6 Rover 75s from Diesel to the 2.5 V6 after endless paying out for problems from chassis corrosion to break pipes rusting to water leaks through sunroof rear lights drain pipes under dash water dripping onto ECU to the £500 to £700 cam belts V6. The Rover 75 1.8 turbo with a silly 5 speed gearbox which is terrible on the motorway. I thought of buying another one but when you check the MOT history it puts me of when a car passes MOT the advises never get repaired they just run into the next MOT. I know what you mean , I bought my Rover 75 for £400, but I had to buy 4 new tyres straight away . Then a month later the clutch went , while getting towed to the garage the front spring broke and buggered the new tyre! So after all the problems at the beginning I have spent nearly £1500 since I bought it. It is my only car , although I have a van , so in the winter I drive the van more often. I've had lots of Rovers in the past , 1 25 2 45s and including my 75 now 3 75s. I've also had a MG ZR 2.0 TD but it had over heating problems so I couldn't drive it. I originally bought it thinking I could get it fixed as I only paid £250 for it. I've also had 3 vectras and 2 BMWS, the first was a 1.8 TI compact E36. The second was a E46 2.0 straight 6. I liked the Beamer's but as the 75 has the BMW engine it's like a beamer in disguise! No I don't know what I would have after my 75 , but I do know that if I had the money I would have a MG 5 electric car. At £29,000 I don't think so unless I win the lottery!

Nice video mate, echoed a lot of my sentiments. A couple of years ago I bought a 2009 S Class, lovely motor but it just felt so clinical. Was running that alongside a 3.2 DSG MK2, a 2005 Boxster S, a 2004 MGTF and a Ford Puma, the original one. I sold the S Class, bought a diesel Fiesta (2011), but soon got bored and sold it. Bought an E Class, but it just felt soulless to me. I kept that for a month, sold that and the TT, which also felt a bit the same. I bought a 2005 S Type, a 2.5 petrol auto and I love it. As with the Rover, I love the typical Britishness of the interior, so much more sould than the Mercs and TT I had. Sometimes just driving for the hell of it is so nice. I normally drive the Puma over the Boxster and the TF needs an MOT after being recommisioned which was a great job I really enjoyed (couple of videos on my channel, but on one which was my first video you have to pause to read the text lol). I feel connected to all my cars, but less so the Porsche, again, kinda sterile if that makes sense? I do, also, from time to time look at getting a 75 and wish with all my heart that Rover had a way back. I've had 4 and they were all great 🙂 They all fulfill different things but as dailys, the Puma and S Type are my go to ones. My Dad bought me the TF and that will always be with me. Anyways, sorry for the long post lol Steve.

You're not wrong. I currently have a Jag XJ Super V8 in my collection which I loved but then the big bills and annoying gremlins surfaced, but the nail in the coffin was how badly the steel bits underneath rust. Body might be ally, but rest ain't. I can't stand any modern cars so always have older vehicles and am looking at going back to another Chrysler 300c, another Alfa GT or maybe a top spec early Rover 75, hence why I'm working my way through your vids. I had one years ago as a project but the rear big suspension arm had rotted and I couldn't get it off as the captive nut in the rear subframe broke off. Only option was to cut the subframe for access but I can't weld so that was that and off it went without me even driving it. Did have a P4 years ago but that's another story... I do about 40k miles a year so I reckon a nice remapped CD Connie would do just right. Just like the Chryslers though, they are getting hard to find now. I see they suffer the same problems that they do in the Freelander, but not heard of injector issues which we used to suffer from a lot in those. I'm not worried about ULEZ stuff as I avoid big cities now as they're far too stabby now and have nothing to offer anymore so I'd rather just drive what I want. Not interested in the consumerism culture being forced on us to keep big business going and really can't get my head around PCP. "You will own nothing and be happy". No thanks, sod off....

Both my Mother and I drive Rovers . My Mum drives a 75 with just 85kmiles and owned from new . I drive an 820 Vitesse with 400k miles on same Tomcat engine My mums is on her 3rd K series . The 75 , compared to the 820 I find claustrophobic , huge screen pillars, heavy clutch and gearbox , small, cramped and badly designed (Kinked) rear arches . My 820 is delightfully balanced , light and airy , power beyond what it should have and 35 mpg . Even at 400kmiles it still romps unruffled down the Motorway every weekend 300 miles carrying all manor of gear in the massive hatchback . I dont like the 75 one bit and would argue that the 800 series still had 5 years of life left in it before production ended . In fact my 820 replaced my previous 7 series BMW which I found the Rover superior to in many respects .

Both are lovely, but my daily is a current E class. I love them all but the Merc was a revelation after having a Skoda Superb. You should try one before dismissing modern motors. I still love 75s, but all three of the above are better in various respects and the Merc is outstanding. It's as refined and quiet as the XJ, almost as fast as the XK and far more reliable and twice as efficient as either. In hyacinth red with AMG trim, I still look over my shoulder every time I leave it in a car park. Incidentally, I agree the the constant, PCP funded regular changing of cars being a problem. On the OC, the 300C always used to get a mention along with Volvo S80. I even saw the old Peugeot 807 mentioned 🤮 I’ve always slated BMW, but then I got a 3 Series in SE spec, I’m not a fan of the M Sport trims, but the SE ticks all my boxes. It’s just so much better in build quality than my ZT. But if that’s all it was about, I wouldn’t even have the ZT, but it provides something the BMW doesn’t, and I doubt I’ll ever find something else that does.

You should have kept the bargain blue V6 75 you saved a year or so back.... get a petrol 75 and convert to LPG. I have a 54 plate 75 1.8 N/A and I think it's fine for ULEZ as it is (Euro 4) and there was a factory LPG scheme. My mum's newish VW Polo 5-door 1.0 Turbu DSG in posh spec is a superb little car, really sporty. I liked the new Corsa a lot when we looked at them, sharp sensible styling.... Before that she had treated herself to a smart Red Fiat 500X 1.4 Multiair Turbo in Lounge spec with leather etc etc and a 6-speed manual... now that was very nice to drive although space-inefficient yet bulky. The Alfa Giulietta is a reasonable prospect but they had become a bit tinny / plasticky.

I think that the issues you mention with the modern Jag is the same issues that I have with most modern cars. I suppose the Jag really is the closest modern successor to the 75. The 75 didn't have a Rover to succeed it (at least in the UK, not sure about China with the Rowe or whatever it's called). In fact the saloon car in general other than the three big German manufacturers seems to be a dying breed as everything is being replaced with an SUV. I also understand you saying you couldn't just get another 75. I couldn't buy another Fiat 500 as there was no direct replacement for my TwinAir 105. My mk1 Mégane coupe only had a successor by name but never a proper 2 door coupe body style. Years ago when I had an R5 and the a Clio I did aspire to the next model up in the range but those were different times when modern cars to me were actually more desirable than they are now.

Its funny how everyone seems to love the Rover 75 nowadays, and state how wonderful they are, but all these people never would have bought them when they were new, because they knew how bad Rovers really were. K series engines always blowing head gaskits and KV6 was a big problem come time for timing belts change. Thats why the company folded. Cars like the 75. They looked old fashioned when new and very unreliable. Its abit like, everyone remembering how nice people are after they are dead, but didnt have anything nice to say about them when alive.

Tom. Have you had to change a front indicator bulb on your 75? Mine needs one and I can't for the life of me get the lens out of the bumper. I've read that you have to push and lever the lens out but then the spring goes missing that holds it together. I have a feeling it's a bumper off job just to change a bulb. 🤬
@tomdrives
Жыл бұрын
It is a frigging nightmare Steve! I’ve done it once and it wasn’t pretty. Not a bumper off job issue is the clips are so brittle. Mike on MG-Rover.org put it best but it’s the only “guide” I have “using hand pressure push the bottom of the outboard corner of the lens very firmly towards the rear of the car; at the same time, push the inboard side of the lens firmly towards the side of the car. This will disengage the securing spring and enable the light unit to be pulled from the front of the car”

Only thing I can really suggest is take your time and be careful, I managed it on my blue 75 and I’m not the most patient. You could also retract the undertray which I believe would give you enough room to do it from underneath

All new cars are the same. They spew from the big assembly line and they bung the badge of your choice on the front. I have the MGZT in Le Man's green. The Rover 75 and ZT are still very advanced cars with character. When I drive mine it turns heads...AND it has the MG signature 'Chip pan' grille. A 20 year old car...2 tons of BRITISHNESS on wheels. I hated it 20 years ago but now....I love it. But hey...I'm an old guy. High 5s for driving pleasure.

Blimey what a depressing video lol. Since your car is in such good condition and has sailed through its mot then KEEP IT. Obviously you look after your cars so there's no reason to get anything else. My personal experience from moving from my beloved ZT diesel was to an Mk4 Mondeo diesel. It was a modern take on the ZT. Had a good few Mondeos then moved to Lexus which now I'm hooked. However have you considered the Chinese Rover 75? Think of it. A Brand New Rover 75. Well newish anyway.

Conor, “depressing”means “causing or resulting in a feeling of miserable dejection.” If I said “My Rover 75 Gives Me Manic Depression and Anxiety” I’d get your point but it doesn’t. I would perhaps think about what you comment before you do especially considering my own personal experiences with what you describe above.
