# First day saying this. Ey Bryan. I have a genuine question, and I think you are best person to answer to it. I recently started in the gym, my goal is to grow muscle. Seems like it is necessary to get in a caloric surplus in order to grow muscle. The problem is that after an investigation I read that getting in a surplus caloric accelerates the aging. What can I do in order to grow muscle without that side effect? Or does growing muscle and exercise compensates the possible acceleration of the aging from caloric surplus?
@Crustee0
9 ай бұрын
You dont need caloric surplus to grow muscle. Caloric surplus will have "most optimal" muscle growth rate, but you can still grow some muscles even at equal or even slight calorie defficient. You can watch jeff nippard video, I think he made one about this curve of muscle growth compared to calorie intake. Its generally accepted that exercising benefits will far outweigh whatever damage you accumulate doing said exercise. Lets take an example of cardio. Its said that human heart will generally beat around 1 billion times before someone die (I watched this on medlife crisis, cmiiw) and doing cardio exercise would technically eat away at your heart "lifespan" so to speak. But the benefit of cardio exercises is that it also lower your average heartbeat throughout your whole lives if you continue doing it, so overall you actually gain "lifespan" on the heart (not to mention its now stronger). Idk what specific exercise you are asking about, but unless we are going full Bryan Johnson mode any exercise is better than none lol

He’s definitely not the best person to answer it. Don’t need caloric surplus. Lift heavy, safely, with good form once a week for 45m to an hour. Rest as needed between sets, but don’t waste time on your phone, stay focused. Rest the rest of the week, physically. Activity is good (walking, sports, working around the house, etc.) but let your body recover from the heavy workout otherwise. Stretch 10mins a day 2-4x a week. Take your weight and eat that many grams of protein a day, more or less a little, no big deal. Eat clean. Protein veg water salt. Refrain from refined and poor carbs if you can. Sleep well. 7-9 hrs a day. Lower stress. Show gratitude for the health you do have and that you’re even able to put a plan in motion and strive towards a better, more holistic you. Follow any and all of these proportional to how much growth you want to see. The plan for optimal human health has never deviated since the beginning of time. There’s just always people along the way who highlight certain features as if they’re revolutionary. Most just don’t want to do these basic things. Good luck xx

Growing muscles and gaining mass is in general in contrast with the goal of reducing rate of aging. However, there is a balance point, which he refers to; you also see VO2max increases, cardiovascular health, etc. as being protective, and sarcopenia (loss of muscle due to aging) as a risk you need to work against. But that's the thing. You can slow down aging, but so far you can't stop it.
