Most urea in the cosmetics are synthetic. In France we have a famous organic (mostly) shop named Aroma zone and they sell urea extract. It is a humectant, a moisturizer, like glycerin, often used to fight keratosis pilaris skin condition, psoriasis... in all the descriptions i saw of this ingredient, they stress the fact that urea used in cosmetics can only be created synthetically ( and we know why: it is the major component of urine) . So when i heard curly proverbs named it in her video denouncing Maui i was like this one i know, i have some at home. Maybe it is this particular type of urea that that is used pure! And that's just disgusting! I think i need to check further for D.Urea. In any case don't buy Maui products! L. From France

Nissi15 Can't speak for everyone. But for myself as someone newly going natural. I'll admit to be confused AF about a lot of what all these chemicals do in products. As I come from the very old school of hot combs, relaxers, and whatever kind of grease was affordable being your "best friends". So after finally breaking away from that line of thinking and learning more about my hair. It has truly been one hell of a confusing journey. And it's just honestly easier for me at times to look and see what someone with my similar-ish hair type is doing. As well as reading various reviews over it. And even still never really knowing what's good til I trial and error it myself. Hence I always kind of wished, there was a site created, where you can just type in the product name into a search engine site and let it find it and bring back the laymen's terms of if the product is a major hell no, not the best but feasible to use, will work in a pinch, or is hella good, or a staple everyone should have in their products at home. Because with as crazy as my work schedule gets at times. When I'm running low on a product, at most I'll check out vids on here a few negative reviews to get the tea on it. And if there isn't any major health issues brought up, just "I don't like the smell, it's too heavy for my hair, etc." Then I'll admit to just going ahead and buying it. Not the best approach to things I know. But do what I have to on limited time.

Another thing is that formaldehyde also has a tendency to build up in the body very quickly. So over time it can actually cause certain types of cancer. To research the things in a product is one thing but also remember to research what effects these things have on the body over an extended period of time. Also understand, if you will, that when there are people who have lived a perfectly healthy life or most of their life and still end up with cancer, there is a problem. always make sure to look up the effects of these things on the body over time. Because when you don't, you're only getting half of the narrative. I might also suggest that you find a reputable third-party that is not willing to be paid off by meta corporate companies so that way the companies can make money and say that it's fine. The rich stick together. It's a very common Trend unfortunately. I agree that we all should be looking into things but I also believe that we also should look at the effects. And look at the long-term of all these things because we only have one life. And we only get one chance.
@WillOnAWhim
6 жыл бұрын
I read research on prolonged exposure as well, which I think I linked in the description. But, only cohorts exposed to unusually high amounts of formaldehyde overtime had cancer health outcomes. Also, formaldehyde is produced naturally in your cells and actually doesn't build up overtime. It is converted to formic acid by your body's metabolic processes and excreted. (www.andeal.org/topic.cfm?cat=4089) High exposure to formaldehyde is where you see the mutagenicity that leads to cancers because your body can't convert it quickly enough. Again, formaldehyde occurs naturally in your body and in some vegetables and fruit that you end up metabolizing safely only because it comes in tiny amounts. And yesss, the tea is that corporations and the government do work closely and shadily sometimes so it's important always to question. Money talks in this country. Research done in the EU, however, seems to corroborate a lot of what I found.

First, thank you for doing the research and sharing the information you've gathered, and for providing credible websites for our use. It's appreciated. Now, allow me to preface my comments by saying I make all my own hair products and don't use Maui Moisture, and I don't have a dog in this fight. Having said that, I wonder why Maui Moisture, would go through the trouble of using natural ingredients and then synthetic presevatives that release a carcinogen - even in its smallest measure?! There are naturally derived preservatives that will protect against mold and bacteria - one of which is derived from coconuts, which Maui Moisture, seems to gravitate towards having used both coconut water and oil in its product. Why not use it and end any questioning of the ingredients it uses? Last question(s), because I cannot recall if it was said: Are the preservatives used bioaccumulators? Is there any risk from consistently using them, even in their low concentrations?

I always say this when it comes to the FDA and the different things that they say are prove. Always look to see who paid for the testing. It has been shown that a lot of the tests that come up for different products are approved because they are paid off even though there are other negative things. The FDA is well known for this as well. I'm not saying that it's wrong but many other countries do not allow most of the chemical factors in their products as is for us. I wonder why? Also note that the product that we send overseas that are cosmetic have to align with the standard of the countries that we send it to. So why is it the FDA approves it for Americans to have it in their system but they changed the recipe and take out those poisonous factors to sell to other countries in order to align with their cosmetic restrictions? This also includes formaldehyde. Just saying.
@WillOnAWhim
6 жыл бұрын
In formaldehyde's case, American products don't necessarily change formula when shipped internationally to remove toxins. Not sure about every country out there, but In the EU, for example, if the concentration of formaldehyde releaser is above safety standard, the product has to clearly label that that's the case, but both diazolidinyl urea and DMDM Hydanatoin are approved for use in the EU in tiny safe amounts. ( www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5152996/ ) It's all just about being an informed consumer on what the regulations are/aren't and how to best move forward in your own personal care regimen. Deleting any extraneous formaldehyde or other toxins from your personal life is always a good move.

Urea is in many good quality skin care products including those used in hospitals, it's beneficial for certain skin conditions including scalp care. There is no need to be alarmed about chemistry that sounds scary.

I am allergic to formaldehyde so I do not use anything that has formaldehyde releasing products in it. You have to just use what is best for you. Formaldehyde is in a lot of things around us as well. I even break out from some bandaids (formaldehyde is in adhesive).

Hey Will and anyone who is interested! Just wanted to let you know to make searching chemicals easier whether organic or not, look up their MSDS! It's a chemical safety sheet for whatever chemical you are looking up! I always look the MSDS for chemicals due to working in a chem lab.
