Blackberry Dumpling recipe:
Ingredients:
1 quart fresh blackberries
2 cups white sugar, or to taste
2 cups water
2 tablespoons butter
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 egg yolk
5 tablespoons milk
Directions:
1. In a large saucepan, combine blackberries, sugar, water, butter, and cinnamon. Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the blackberries begin to break down and form a sauce. This process usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
2. While the blackberries are cooking, take a mixing bowl and whisk together flour and salt. Cut in the shortening using a knife or pastry blender until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Then, stir in the egg yolk. Gradually add milk, one tablespoon at a time, and toss the mixture with a fork until the flour mixture becomes moistened. Be careful not to add more milk than necessary; the mixture should form a ball when squeezed with your hand.
3. Divide the dough into two equal portions and shape them into small balls.
4. Drop the dumplings into the blackberry mixture. Cover the saucepan and let the dumplings simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes. Avoid stirring the dumplings until they are fully cooked to prevent them from clumping together. If needed, gently push the dumplings down into the juice while cooking.
