I really enjoyed this. Even though I study Fiore, it's really neat to see the "realm" of each guard/position defined less in terms of "it looks like this" and more in terms of the sword and its geometry in relation to the body.

Lichtenauer does mention "special" Positions like the Iron Gate, but i do agree that most transitionary positions can be categorized as one of the main 4. What we should remember the most is one of the things Lichtenauer teaches first: Any Position is useless if you dont move. "Was liegt ist tot". So Positions might be defining in Theory and useful in practice, but in reality the most Impactful Techniques are not your Positions, neither your Transitions, but your Cuts, Thrusts, Parries Feints and Counter Manouvres. If you train these, you will train the Positions aswell.

Longpoint has always been considered a "Special" Position, as far back as i 33 at least, so it would naturally break any theory about guards, as it would be it's own special case.

I disagree, there's nothing special about longpoint that would disqualify it from a guard theory. It' the point where cuts and thrusts pass through at their centre, for this to be true for thrusts the point must be online, and therefore depending on relative hand position it's either ochs or pflug.

@@DansFencingTakes I encourage you to read the following article by renowned Christian Henry Tobler: " Hot, Wet, Cold, and Dry The Four Guards " you'll find the idea of only 4 guards is deeply rooted in german fencing tradition and more. And you'll also find the reason why Longpoint is kinda special. Enjoy.

The article in question is an academic ponderance, based on philosophy not on fencing, and it's point about naturally being four guards with a fifth quintessence is disproven by looking at other mediaeval fencing sources, meyer, digrassi, fiore, and even liechtenauer include more than four positions they call guards. Also my theory is not of guards, but all positions, be they mobile or static.

@@DansFencingTakes That's definitely wrong my dude. If your condition is in/out of presence and point high/low relative to hand, you can form a long point parallel to the ground wherein the point is neutral and in presence. Now not everyone takes this to be a guard but you're basically reinventing italian guard theory oost 1550 or so.

I mean, the theoretical dissonance is that Meyer isn't a Lichtenauer source, he was a Hollander who read a lot. However, your practical application of the cuts is very solid.

I had created a simple system to teach sword fighting a good while ago in order to make the way i needed to teach work. As the other systems i did not find to have what i needed term wise and didnt liek teaching in another language haha. I wanted a system that had all the sword positions in a simple easy way to understand in english. I did it similar. There are 5 zones. 1- 5. And then several tip directions. The zone your in and the tip direction makes your sword position as well call them . For example there is 1 forward. 1 back. 1 up. 1 down. Cool to see some other interesting stuff along these lines

If only 4 sword positions, what position is S&B ward 5 longtail then? The medieval Masters weren't always right. Especially when certain treatises were older than they were. Think outside their boxes, Hema Frens.
