First of all, i am not talking only about fighting games, but also shoot em ups, 2D games like Metal Slug , platformers, etc. Second of all, it is true that the way of development of a lot of these older games (and way of input reading) was designed around the specific use of a joystick, taking into mind it's limitations and strengths. In a game like SFIII Third Strike , 360 and 720 motions are nigh impossible to do consistently & at speed on a hitbox. I can understand the appeal of a hitbox to some (especially for games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, or KOF) but generally, i would say it's far from "showing up to an archery field with a machine gun" , if the hitbox was as much of a advantage as you claim, it would have either been banned, or literally every professional player would have switched to it from the moment it was released. Even in games like Tekken, most pro players still prefer to play on a Korean Stick or a pad.

On the note of the octagonal gate, I found that it helped me more for defense compared to square gates. With square gate, transitioning from crouching block to standing block would be difficult for me because I pushed too far upwards and ended up getting back jump. Having a corner for holding directly back solved that issue for me entirely.
@antrolos8542

I used to smash the walls of my square gate so hard I felt like I was bumping into obstacles. Switched to an octagonal gate and it all made a lot more sense to me. I could ride the gate for easier motions and I had a tactile feel of every direction, not just the diagonal ones. I played like this for about a year (I'm still fairly new to FGs) until the KoF 02UM rollback beta came out which is when I noticed that while octagonal gates make motions easier, they also tend to cause accidental inputs. Hyper hop jumping normals (motions of 19D for example) kept resulting in TK fireball motion specials for me because instead of going straight from 1 to 9 (down-back to up-forward), I rolled all the way in a 12369 motion. This was when I thought back to all the people that constantly said I should get good at execution instead of using an octagonal gate that I dismissed but these accidental specials were what really made me second guess my decision to play on an octagonal gate. So I made the switch back to square, the obvious issues arose (accidentally jumping when trying to block standing because I can't feel 2, 4, 6 and 8 directions anymore, less consistent DPs and fireballs) but I pretty much stopped getting accidental inputs and instead had to work a little harder for intentional ones. To me it payed off, I'm still not 100% there but I think I made the right choice. I still smash the gate for most motions though, people tell me I'm super loud in VC because of this. Idk playing quietly requires so much attention I just yank the stick around without even feeling like I'm being forceful or anything when I'm in the zone but oh well, maybe one day I'll learn.

IMMEDIATELY I was like "HUH? You want me to sit here for centuries tryna learn to perfectly tilt my stick into that microscopic window between the trigger and the gate? And do *full motions* with it? In the middle of a FIGHT? CONSISTENTLY???? Yeah nah, you got me 1000% fricked up chief." Even today, though I get the logic behind it and can kinda do it, I know I'm NEVER getting to the point where I'm doing that all day every day. An octagonal gate DOES help, and no, the gate is there to stop the actuator from destroying the microswitches by jamming into them really hard. Especially in games like KOF, GG, BBCF/BBTAG, with lots of quarter/half circle movements , an octagonal gate can certainly help some players & types of players get the moves more consistently. Not to mention, something that i don't see mentioned enough... shoot em ups. Many people (myself included) play shoot em ups on a stick, and an octagonal gate is a MUCH preferable option to have for a shmup compared to a square gate , because you re holding the actuator against the gate for longer periods of time compared to fighting games. For fighting games, we may see arcade sticks actually die out as a viable competitive option, but i couldn't care less. I'll still keep playing KOF2002 and KOF98 on stick, shmups on stick, and Metal Slug on stick, no matter what new games are being released. I only need arcade games and Monster Hunter to be satisfied, and MH is doing great so far with Rise coming up!

0:23 You are exactly right!!! I have researched everything about all kind of gates and many people think too quickly that the octagonal gate is better just because there is a notch for every direction and it sounds logical to play with an 8 directional guide when there's 8 directions. And many American youtubers promote the octagon because that's what they grew up with without knowing about the purpose about the square gate. BUT they have missed the purpose of the square gate. In the end it's all about preference so i can't say what's best for who but there is a logical reason why 99% of joysticks come with a square gate as standard and many sticks don't even have an octo gate as an option. That is that the square offers the most freedom out of all gates with just enough guidance to help you save time and effort. The 4 sides on a square gate are there to stop the movement after the switch has been activated so you don't waste time going too far. And the corners are there for quick diagonal reference. But it offers more than an octagonal gate because you can move the stick in a circle motion without feeling the notches of an ogtagonal gate and also an ogtagon and a circle gate will block quick access to diagonals after one of the 4 main directions are pressed. On a square you can effortlessly tap down and it will hit the diagonal direction, on octagon and circle you have to move the stick along the gate. That's a debateable point but i find it much easier to just tap down. And as a final note a Japanese style joystick is made to be used with good control of the ball top, so in theory you should be able to play near perfectly without any gate at all. And when you have that control the square gate will simply just aid you so you don't go too far and it makes diagonals easy. Again i'm not saying an octagonal gate isn't for you (whoever is reading this) but it's good to know the reasoning behind the square gate and i recommend using it for most cases. Sorry for making this even longer but Seimitsu has been really clever and created a great modified square gate (in LSX-NOBI-STD and the new just released Silent LS-40) and a hybrid square/octagonal gate (in LSX-NOBI-PRO) The modified square gate has really small notches on all 4 main directions that help the shaft to settle in the center and also the side of the gate is angled the tiniest amount so it helps to lead to the notches. That means when that you can press up,down,left,right really quickly and you will find the directions on the center easier. And also when performing half circles/full circles they make it really easy to stop at the direction you need to stop at. Also because they are only really small notches when you play normally you don't notice them but they help you center the main directions in the background. And the hybrid square/octagonal also feels great because it feels almost like a square gate but the diagonals are a little closer than usual.

I've used all kinds of restrictor gates. My Q1SW came with the default square gate. At first I was struggling with doing quarter circle and half circle moves, so I bought an octagonal gate and it did help me doing those moves more consistently for a few years. During that period I learned how to do quarter circles without touching the edge of the gate, and as soon as I started playing BBCF, suddenly I found myself hitting the corners inconsistently, as the game relies a lot more than corner normals than SF does. After a while I decided to switch back to square gate and sure enough it was easier for me to pull those moves more consistently, although I kinda missed easier half circle execution with the octa gate. A while later I saw a round gate for really cheap (like $1 including ship), so I decided to give it a try just for fun and wow, it blew me away. Contrary to my initial belief, the round gate didn't ruin my normal execution at all, while making quarter circle, half circle and even full circle a lot smoother. I'm now confident that it's the best gate for people with execution problem like me. Still, any gate is fine as long as you get used to it, and if you are not sure which one is for you, give all of them a try. They are quite cheap by their own.

Mortal Kombat 1 & 2 had circular gates ( in the UK & Canada ). If you go from neutral to diagonal, it's easy to be slightly off on the diagonal and register as either down or back ( on an American style bat stick ). I've been spending a couple of days essentially relearning how to use a Japanese style joystick with a square gate ( fight stick - Sanwa stick & buttons ) on King of Fighters 13 Steam Edition. I miss the crutch of being able to ride the gate but with directions being displayed on-screen, in modern fighting games, you can figure out the bare minimum of force that you need to do, without ever having to touch the gate, so the throw distance is shorter ( it's very much more mental, than a physical feedback ).

@@MrAgmoore Fast forward a year, I'm now on square gate again lol The main reason was Blazblue. The game forces me to constantly switch between hitting the corners and doing half circle inputs. Granted that half circle still feels better for me on circle gate, but unless I use square gate, I can hardly hit the corners consistently. As for circles and half circles, I now can input them fairly consistently on square gate, so in the end it's probably the best overall.

@@GeminionRay Yeah that's the tradeoff. The cost of missing diagonals is higher than the ease of hitting quarter and half circles. I've never used an octagonal gate, so I'm kinda curious about that.

@@MrAgmoore From my experience the octagonal gate is a pretty weird one. On one hand it feels like a good choice for beginners since it kind of acts as a guide for quarter circle inputs, but as I got more and more used to handling the joystick, it started to get in my way. First I was hitting down when I was trying to hit the left and right corners, and it felt pretty bumpy for half circles (not so bad for full circle btw). It also doesn't feel very good for charge characters as a result of hitting down instead of hitting corners. It's probably be fine for Tekken with Korean back dash but then again I haven't played Tekken so I'm not so sure. For 2D fighters I still feel that the square gate is the most well-rounded, very versatile and suitable for most games.

Last days I was curious about how is the state/acceptance of hitbox controllers. There was sometime since I last hear about it, while a could see customs posted in r/fightsticks, I couldn't tell how is the current situation and opinions about them. I came from keyboard, and cant play well tekken or any other fight game in a pad, and even platformers I do prefer in keyboard, it gives me confidence, precision, and now I'm waiting to receive a hidrid hitbox with stick ordered days ago. It would be safer to just order a mixbox with WASD, but I want so bad try a hitbox layout...

I’m new to gaming in general and have only use a regular controller and getting ready to get a fight stick is the only difference between the obsidian and pearl the button layout? Cause honestly I don’t know which I’ll like most layout wise but I want higher quality and I haven’t seen any premium ones that are premade like that

if you don't know which layout you'll like between the vewlix and noir then it's most likely that you be fine with either! I play noir layout on the Hori Fighting Edge and I'm totally used to it now and can go back and forth between the two. If you're really interested though you can check out a vewlix arcade cabinet at an arcade somewhere :)

Honestly, the only place that an octagonal gate is truly better than a square gate is in games like shooters and other places where precise movement matters. Well, that and if you're trying to emulate an arcade game that had an octagonal gate to begin with.

I tried octagonal gate because i couldn't do the half circle move faster. It was the biggest mistake i have did because i hadnt discovered the full potential of my stick. I switched back and discovered some characters in fighting games, like the ones i have used for years with pad was to difficult for me to reboot my mind and fingers to try a new weapon. When i try new characters, its easier for me to learn the character on a stick. For example, Daigo uses stick on shoto characters and hitbox on others
