I worked in the oilfield for several years so I know what he meant by that line. What Daniel's character is talking about there is when you drill, you can drill not just vertically but you can drill horizontally out into other people's land. This is common now and tracked but back then most wells were vertical and there was no way to track where a well ended up at the end. He figured out a way to slowly drill horizontal onto the land that wasn't his and got all the oil from that land, therefore that land was dry and had no value anymore.

Okay, okay, okay! I’m not seeing any love in these comments for Daniel Day Lewis’ very first Oscar winning performance in “My Left Foot.” He is MESMERIZING in it!! Based on a true story, he plays an Irishman with Cerebral Palsy who happens to also be a talented painter - however, due to his disease, he lacks proper control in his upper body so he is forced to paint by placing the paintbrush between the toes of his left foot. As a healthcare professional of many years, I can vouch for how physiologically accurate his rendition is - every physical tic and mannerism is spot on. Also, most characters of this type are portrayed as pathetic and/or noble figures to feel sorry for. But not in this case. Daniel Day Lewis plays this character with so much piss n’ vinegar, we cannot help but glimpse his whole humanity, warts and all. All three of his Oscar winning performances show off his amazing range: “My Left Foot” “There Will Be Blood” “Lincoln” Also nominated for: “In the Name of the Father” “Gangs of New York” “Phantom Thread” But his performance in “My Left Foot” is one for all time. Truly astounding.

Also, the composer for this film and other PTA films is Jonny Greenwood, guitarist from Radiohead! He composed another movie starring Joaquin Phoenix called You Were Never Really Here. it's a terrific film and the music is a perfect match.

I recommend "Baby Driver", directed by Edgar Wright. He, who also did "Scott Pilgrim v. The World" (also recommend), has great cinematography/camera work and re-watch-ability for days.

You just must watch Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot. It’s based on a true story where he plays a character with Cerebral Palsy and he is brilliant. Wins the Oscar for that role. Brilliant!! Must watch for everyone who has never seen it. He is so good you think he has cerebral palsy. You would never know he is acting.

*This and **_"No Country For Old Men"_** are truly cerebral films. You don't expect this to be so tense and so complex. There are literally so many captivating factors about **_"There will be blood"_** . This is a movie few people can claim to fully understand even after multiple watches. The acting is superb. I loved watching this reaction as well as the one for **_"No Country For Old Men"_** , another spectacular movie. Keep up the great work*

One word: Magnolia. More words: PT Anderson's 3rd film is not only a masterpiece, but his most "Tarantino-esque." Some may call it overindulgent, but it has a truly remarkable screenplay, the BEST turn-of-the-century ensemble cast, and what will likely prove to be Tom Cruise's best dramatic performance.

The final scene is one of the greatest climaxes of any film in history. Daniel knows he has Eli exactly where he wants him and makes him renounce everything he says he believes for money, only to reveal he has everything already. Eli, who is a horrible hypocrite, breaks down and begs Daniel for help, saying that GOD didn't warn him about the decline of the economy. But Daniel, in a mad rage and having gained victory for Eli's humiliation of him, beats Eli to death, telling his butler "I'm finished!" He's tired of being a good man. He pretended to everyone, he pretended with H.W(who he truly loved(the little montage as H.W leaves shows that), he just believed love was a weakness in the end), but now he didn't have to anymore.

To answer your questions: Daniel Day-Lewis modeled his voice after Walt Whitman. Whitman's voice would have been characteristic of the period. The film was partially based on Upton Sinclair's book _Oil!_ I've never read it myself, but I know that PTAnderson didn't conjure it completely out of thin air. Anderson is probably the best living American director we have. He's basically replaced Kubrick in terms of producing quality. He takes years between each film and there is controversy over what each one means, but nobody can deny the craftsmanship. To answer your question, yes, everything Daniel Plainview does in this film is to further his capital gains. Daniel is a sociopath, devoid of any and all compassion or empathy for any other human being. He does have some pride in people who make him look good, like his "brother" because he felt that his brother reflected his strengths; his "son" because he could mold him into a copy of himself. But Daniel has no problem killing people to get what he wants, he doesn't really get off on it; like Chigurh in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, it's just something he can do without issue.

Great review, Brandon. Definitely check out Daniel Day-Lewis' real voice. The voice of Daniel Plainview couldn't be more different, it's crazy. Also please check out 'Phantom Thread', also starring Daniel Day-Lewis and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. A completely different movie, but it really showcases Daniel Day-Lewis' range in acting. He's fenomenal.

I always felt a big theme of this movie was that capitalistic greed and religion go hand in hand. Daniel and Eli were both narcissistic sociopaths hiding behind a guise of a friendly family man, and the latter a religious healer. Both were ripping people off in their own way. They were two of the same coin in constant competition, and as Daniel said he can NEVER let anyone win, not even his own son.

I remember hearing a Quentin Tarantino interview where he was asked about movies that he really liked or scenes that he really liked or something like that, and he referenced this movie. He praised the opening scene where you saw Daniel Plainview (Daniel-Day Lewis's character) break his leg, pull himself out of the hole he was in and you infer that he crawled to get himself some help. Tarantino reasoned that they did that at the beginning, so that Plainview earned the audience's respect. Seeing him do that almost justifies the rest of his actions throughout the rest of the movie until he alienates his adopted son and murders the preacher. Because he earned all of his success and that is conveyed in that one opening scene.

Fun fact: you mentioned early on that the movie went so longnwithout Dialogue. Paul Thomas Anderson intended to do the entire movie free of all dialogue. That was one of his passion projects. But with this film he realized how importnat dialogue would be, so he ended up doing the first 15ish minutes without Dialogue to set the tone of the film, then the rest came later!

He can't let anything have power over anything he wants power over, and he can't let anything have power over him. The music is what he is, it's telling you the whole time what he is. And notice all the scenes where his face is lit by fire and flames. That's Daniel. He has a competition in him. Black blood he cares for, red blood he does not, and there will be both.

Daniel Day Lewis, IMHO, is our current greatest living actor who has had his pick of roles for forever. I believe he retired a couple years ago. That accent is very specific for this role. I also think this was Paul Dano's most impressive role. Love this movie, but it is so intense, can only see it every couple years.

If you would like to hear Daniel Day Lewis's normal speaking voice you should watch a clip of him accepting one of his three Academy Awards. It might not be quite what you expect. He's an interesting guy. Years ago he quit acting to become an apprentice shoemaker in Italy for a while. I always thought that was really cool.
