My girlfriend thought her Hydro Flask coffee mug was letting contents get cold faster than it used to, as her coffee was no longer hot when she got to work like it once was. As it happens, I have the same mug, and also a thermal camera.
Turns out, she was right - her's is the one on the right (bottom). The outer surface gets hotter, implying greater convective heat transfer to the surrounding air. Since heat in = heat out looking at the outer wall, higher surface temp and therefore heat transfer to the surroundings also implies higher heat transfer from the mug contents to the outer wall. Either she's no longer got a vacuum seal, or her mug is of different internal construction to mine (and some other change has her thinking her coffee is colder sooner than it used to be).
