At PrimeDay 2023, the BA120 drop below 20 USD makes it a no-brainer for a single tower CPU cooler. Nice! 🎉

Thanks for reviewing this series! Gamers Nexus reviewed the Assassin Spirit (which I can't find anywhere?) and really liked its performance per dollar, but it seemingly disappeared almost immediately after they reviewed it??? It's good to see these ones which are still available are also good value models. Kind of weird that they are all so similar in performance and price, but I guess if they have the ability to manufacture a bunch of different types and see what becomes the most popular, then maybe that's what works for them. I would lean toward the less expensive one, since I am typically buying APUs for low power consumption and only super light if any gaming anyhow. I know I can't (and most people won't) push 200W on their CPUs. And the APUs are super power efficient anyhow, probably anything would do. Just that stock is too loud in these high-airflow cases they're selling anymore, IMO. So when a great price/performance tower for around $20 USD is available from a couple of brands like this, I start to take notice. I think this brand or ID Cooling SE 120mm series look like the lowest-end champs for value for the dollar at the moment! There are other strong models around $25 or $35, but these two brands are doing really strong for about $20 as well, which I love to see! [Edit: DeepCool G400 looks alright for about $25 as well? But maybe only if the other two I mentioned go out of stock or their prices went up over $20? Performance seems mostly similar.] So... again, thanks for your work setting these up and testing these. Your channel is one of the main/only ones going in-depth with this series of coolers. Much appreciated! P.S. I hope you have a good new year!!!

I like this over the Assassin King mostly because I trust solid blocks more than exposed heat pipes. There's always gaps that over time I feel can shift some and possibly affect performance of the cooler. Currently this cooler is within $5 USD of the Assassin King or coolers like that and I'd rather pay the extra.

It's really a good CPU cooler. Now, yes going up to a 200 watts load would most likely start showing the Burst Assassin in a better light, but you really need to get some really high-end CPUs to push 200 plus watts.

Burst Asassin 120 CPU fan is great..it's not only 6 heat pipes Vs 4 & 5 It'a come with flat surface (better CPU contact with heatpipes), also better thermal paste & slightly bigger heatsink (Compared to 4 & 5 heatpipes model) Final Note: I know U used 3900x, but that wasn't acurate.. new CPUs (Intel / Ryzen) do not throttle until 95c.. so this Burst model will have like 5c more headroom in new CPUs models (Ryzen 3000 series already throttle at 85c)

The problem with your tests of CPU coolers is not the coolers themselves, but the CPU. In order for the difference to become apparent, you need r7 5700x, at least. And yes, I understand that you are buying a test stand and coolers with your own money.

Great review, thanks. I'm looking to change the stock cooler that comes with a 12700f in a prebuilt conf. paired with a rtx3060ti. I will set this processor under load, often. I can't stand the intruding noise, trying to make it as silent as possible. I've changed the PSU with a beQuiet and much better now. Do you think that this cpu cooler is the one for my system? I've read that the Peerless Assasin is very good, but I don't really know if I need that much of a cooler, with 2 fans hence twice the noise. Could you, please, give me some advice? Thank you !

Both are good coolers, the peerless assassin is the better deal. Regarding the 2 fans, you can drop the RPM to lower the noise.

Hey dude, when testing coolers, it's a big jump to go from a 3600 to a 3900X. With these 120mm single tower coolers I think the better route, since this would match buying choices for most people, using something like a 3600 and a 3800X or move up to Zen 3 and use the 5600 and 5800X. Once you move to 12+ cores I think most people are going to move to dual tower if they stick with air cooling. I know that TDP can be similar between something like a 5800X and 5900X but operating power consumption at all-core loads is going to be more for a 5900X. Maybe it's just me, but that sure seems to be what a lot of comments suggest, which is a single tower more for the 65W TDP parts because that's all you need, and as power consumption moves up for heavy loads, moving to a dual tower. The difference becomes even greater for Zen 4 because now you have 170W TDP parts for dual CCD CPU.

Have you looked at the weight difference of the AK and BA? AK is 1000g and the BA is 510g (at least according to their spec sheet) so half it's weight. I'm wondering whether the BA can still keep up with the AK because of the additional heatpipe or the weights are not correct? I suspect that the AK includes the fan weight as well, if we drop it, the difference would still be 380 grams in favor of the AK. (Is the performance of one heat pipe = 380 grams of heat absorbing material?) Since the BA can keep up with the AK with less weight, I think the BA is the better engineered product...
@HardwareForGamers
10 ай бұрын
I don't think the spec sheet is correct, because there's no way the heatsink of the AK is 1000g. the box of the AK indicates 550g for the heatsink, so I assume 1000g is the gross weight (the whole box)

Strange that there is literally no performance difference between the AK120 and the BA120 despite the additional heatpipe and the slightly bigger cooling surface. Could this be due to the direct touch heatpipes of the AK120 vs the Nickel plated Copper bottom with sandwitched heatpipes of the BA120?
@HardwareForGamers
Жыл бұрын
The AK 120 non SE (what I tested) has a nickel plated copper cold plate as well, so that's not what happening here. I believe it's where the heatpipes are in the heatsink, there's a heatpipes a few mm from the edge of the heatsink. Which I think makes the BA 120 more like a 5-5 1/2 heatpipes cooler. Which is why it's matching the AK 120.

Why would it matter? There are very few CPUs that can push 200 watts safely, those that can are in the price range that wouldn't pair with a 30 USD cooler.

@@HardwareForGamers Many people do pair 30usd aircoolers with 200w cpus. I often see builds with 12600K, 5800x3d, etc paired with budget aircoolers. (5800x3d might have lower total powerdraw but is as hard to cool as 200w+ intel.) Most use stuff like 35usd pa120 SE or better but I see folks with ak400. Especially gamers who are not running workloads on them. The reason why I think its good to have higher wattage in tests is that the coolers behave very differently when the heatload is bigger. The whole list often changes a lot. Some coolers might begin to show their limits earlier than others.
@HardwareForGamers
Жыл бұрын
I'm sure you see a lot of 30 USD coolers paired with a 12600k or 5800x3d because both of thoughts CPUs put out about 120w under full load, and more like 95w while gaming. The 13700k and 7900x can get go over 200w and the 13900k and 7950x can most definitely get 250+ with a few tweaks in the UEFI you can get them to around 230-240w which users should. Plus you make a good point that a CPU like the 5800x3d (that's power draw around 120w) can be as hard to keep cool as a higher wattage CPU, so the deciding factor is more to do with the design of the CPU not the total package power. So I ask again, why would it matter?
@ajsdjkdasjksdakjdaskj
Жыл бұрын
@@HardwareForGamers 12600K can draw anywhere from 190 to 300+ watts (first is stock powerdraw in multithreaded workloads and second is overclocking and Prime95 in scenarious where the cpu is kept so cool the motherboard allows it to keep boosting). Cpu coolers like the AK120 and AB120 are rated up to 240 watts by the manufacturer. Seeing how they cope with higher wattage can be information that the potential buyers want to know. This is especially true with higher end aircoolers like ak620 which might be used to cool cpus like 13600K or 7900x.
