Thermonuclear Fusion Unveiled - Inside the Sun
Thermonuclear fusion is the process of atomic nuclei combining or "fusing" using high temperatures to drive them close enough together for this to become possible. Such temperatures cause the matter to become a plasma and, if confined, fusion reactions may occur due to collisions with extreme thermal kinetic energies of the particles. There are two forms of thermonuclear fusion: uncontrolled, in which the resulting energy is released in an uncontrolled manner, as it is in thermonuclear weapons ("hydrogen bombs") and in most stars; and controlled, where the fusion reactions take place in an environment allowing some or all of the energy released to be harnessed for constructive purposes .
The same process occurs in thermonuclear (fusion) bombs. In the Sun, the process occurs in a controlled manner. In the Sun's core, the temperature is about 15 million Kelvins, and the density is 150 times that of water. The Sun's core is where the energy is produced via the process of thermonuclear fusion. The specific type of fusion that occurs inside the Sun is known as proton-proton fusion, where protons fuse together and are turned into helium, releasing tremendous amounts of energy in various forms .
The Sun fuses approximately 620 million metric tons of hydrogen each second in its core, and this process is the source of solar energy. If thermonuclear fusion becomes favorable to use, it would significantly impact the world's energy production, potentially providing a long-term source of low-carbon electricity without emitting carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere .
In the heart of Provence, the world's largest nuclear fusion device is under construction to demonstrate the feasibility of harnessing nuclear fusion at an industrial scale. This project aims to replicate the same reaction that powers the Sun and stars, with the goal of generating net energy .
