I had a cat that used to 'alert' me. I have PTSD and would often have debilitating panic attacks that would feel like they came out of nowhere. I eventually figured out that he could tell a few minutes ahead of me that an attack was coming on, either through chemical changes in my body that he could smell, or changes in my heart rate and/or breathing. He had very specific alerting behaviours that he used only when he sensed an attack coming. Eventually I learned what he was doing, and then was able to lessen or completely avoid them altogether. Literally saved my life more than once. The kicker was that he taught himself, first using my daughter's panic attacks. He went from inserting himself as a comfort device during an attack, to figuring out earlier and earlier that one was coming. He lived to be almost 20. RIP Fat Billy, smartest and best cat ever, there needs to be more like ya, lad. ❤

That is an amazing story, what a good clever cat. My cat never alerted but she did save my life so many times by just coming up and reminding me she was there, literally I got her because of my mental health I needed something to keep me alive and she was the one who came up and pressed her little head against mine. I still have her and she is going strong… she also inspired my family to adopt 5 cats to various homes and I now foster kittens, but my girl is still my precious baby princess.

I'm normally disabled because of a mistake made during a back surgery, so I already had a service dog. He kept getting nose to nose with me and growling softly. He also wouldn't leave me alone for one second. I was bruising real bad too. I went to the doctor, she sent me to a hemetology oncologist. Had my appointment with him the next day. The day after that, I was told I had a very rare form of leukemia. I was sent to Indianapolis from there to see a nationally known expert for my type of leukemia. He said if I hadn't listened to my dog, I would have been dead in just a few days. I had to put him down just 2 months after finishing all of my chemo. He did what he was put on this earth to do. He did it damn well, too. RIP Iggy 😢

Some dogs can learn the difference in your smell and heart beat to be able to alert, however most neurological service animals are to aid and assist the handler during/after the episode- from retrieving medicine, to getting help, to keeping the area clear and helping the handler with moving... Some studies show that raising the service animal from pup to adult and training them yourself gives you the highest chance of them being able to alert to neurological episodes

I don't know exactly what my 11 month old Belgian Malinois pup is detecting, but I started training the task by calling him over to in front of my legs and standing still while I "lean" on him (obviously with none of my weight on he was small and growing) when I stood up and got dizzy. Then one day I stood up and got dizzy and I just felt his fur across my legs. I have no idea what he's detecting, but he clearly figured it out after a few months.

I was diagnosed with a heart condition at 4 and got my first service dog at age 8. She was my best friend. She was my shadow and knew how to play just as hard as she worked. It was so amazing getting to grow up with her. She spent nearly 15 long years with me, saw me graduate high school and college, outlived both my grandfather and my mom, and died just a short time after my engagement. She saved my life multiple times, and I truly believe that she waited until she knew I was going to be alright before she made the decision to move on. I have a painting of her on my nightstand, along with her paw print, her favorite chew toy, and a photo of her. I look at them every day and am reminded of so much love. No one ever has, and odds are no one ever will love me like that dog loved me. I was her world. Miss you, my sweet Abby. There will never be another like you. ❤

Service dogs are amazing, because dogs are stupid. Even the stupidest human is capable of incredible things. It always confounds me why people put so much on a dog being able to do something we can’t and correlating that with them being “intelligent.” They have superior hearing and smelling to humans, so their seemingly supernatural ability to do things like this aren’t because of supreme intelligence, it’s because intelligent humans were able to train the animal to focus its superior senses to our whims. That doesn’t make the animal not stupid.

What a gorgeous and beautiful dog! The fact that he knows to go beyond his training and get more help just shows how amazing animals can be, if you don't already know! I have a Shih Tzu called Charlie and he has saved my life both physically and mentally. I have epilepsy that is not controlled enough and even at 15wks old, I had a seizure and he howled until my partner came and from since then if I am out with him and it happens, he will bark and howl in a certain to get help but he never leaves my side and once I stop seizing he sits on my chest to make sure that when I come round, I don't jump up quickly and calm my breathing down. He is amazing and he was not trained to do this he just has always done it which gave me freedom to go out without another person and when my episodes are bad and many, he stays with me and sticks his squeaky toy in my face to play and take my mind off it😁😁!
