Having worked at a dealership for 6 months over 10 years ago, one thing I remember about salespeople is that most don’t have any interest or passion for cars. They also don’t care if the car is shit. As long as they get a commission they don’t care.

Well, you have to realize the Aveo was the "it beats walking car" or "it beats riding the bus car" for those that could barely afford it; so it served its purpose. They were also the cheapest rental car. I rented plenty of them on business trips where I was flying in only for the day (arrive in morning and fly out by evening of the same day); so it served its quick, cheap purpose.

Some of these salesman seem like they'd rather just be selling the cars they think are cool and want to own rather than understanding why specific types of buyers would want them. I could make cases for why someone would want the Edge over the Escape and why someone shopping a mid size sedan would want the accord easily in conversation.

Tyler, can definitely agree with you on the Aveo, worked for Chevy as a tech during those years, absolute pile of crap. Sales wise, done Subaru, Porsche, VW and Hyundai. Honestly, only thing I would say I wouldn't do again is VW. Is a brand struggling with an identity crisis. Ever since Diesel gate, they don't know what they are. GTI is only thing remotely interesting, but the Mk8 is a shell of its former self. Subaru was putting out a pretty stellar product, other than the earliest CVTs being a bit soulless. I would disagree with the thought on the Taycan, I felt like they were fantastic cars, and the refresh on them is going to make them even better. And Hyundai's current line (as you and April discovered with the new Santa Fe) is excellent.

My folks have a 6cyl. 2012 Kia Rondo and it has been one of their most reliable cars since they buy cars. Despite being partial to Ford and Kia, when it comes to the Ford side, I still don't get why they even bother to sell the Edge when you have the Escape and Bronco Sport that are the same size, share the same components and are a fraction of the price? That's the reason why my local Ford dealership has a complete row of Edges that have been sitting for quite some time. I'm glad that they're finally discontinuing it because they have never bothered to keep it competitive over the years since they've come out with other SUVs during that time which get the love and attention whereas the Edge gets left in the dust. The only things they did was integrate a newer vertical touchscreen and a front/rear fascia facelift a few years ago and that's it. Literally everything else about the car is the exact same since the current generation was released all the way back in 2015! As far as Kia goes, there's really nothing from them that I would be embarrassed to sell if I was in the dealer business. They recently discontinued the Rio which was long in the tooth and a cheaply made sedan that offered very little other than its affordable pricing. Mostly everything else right now is a good sell. The ones I could see struggling is the Seltos, Niro, and EV6. The Seltos is a bit controversial looking, the interior quality isn't there, and it doesn't have a refined driving experience. The Niro because, yet again, the looks are controversial and the fact it offers a plug-in Hybrid which is a slow-selling segment. The gasoline hybrid is a better buy since you can take it to a traditional gas station. The EV6 because it's a full BEV which aren't doing so well with the lack of infrastructure and whatever ones exist are very glitchy. Everything else, IMO, is a huge hit. Forte, Soul, Sportage, Sorento, Telluride, EV9, and even the Carnival seem to be doing well since I see them absolutely everywhere!

One of the things that seems loosely connected to successful sales folks is that they need to "genuinely believe" in the product they are selling to be totally effective. If you are going to give someone a features and benefits story, it is generally better that you believe that story yourself first. A second thing that really helps in selling anything is for the subject product to genuinely possess some unique feature that differentiates it from the competition. The only way to credibly sell junk products is to explain to the customer why the product was built as it was and how it is positioned in the market place and then pass the back to them with "your decision". I am not sure if there is any way to regulate vehicle sellers to avoid unethical sellers. Given how many times Hoovie has reported that the seller was not properly disclosing some weakness in a product he was buying seems all too frequent.
