I was born in the 60s. Went to high school in the late 70s. There is nothing quite like the sound of a big block V-8. Cars today will never have the soul and the class of the cars back then.

It had a factory 300 hp 327 and a 4 on the floor transmission..... it was very fun to drive! We would have our own 1/4 mile strip on a county tar road. We lived in a rural area. I was born in 1947 so I was old enough to see the mid 50's cars run. The height of the drag culture's influence on youth and the general public was the late 50's to the mid 60's. The rails, gassers and stockers were amazing. The nitro and burning rubber fumes, the crowd going wild. It was all really the greatest show ever. Never mind the experimental cars. I saw two hydrogen peroxide and Turbonique cars run. The Jet Dragsters at the AHRA and "outlaw" straps were a memory for a lifetime. Yeah there were fires, engine explosions and Crashes but that was a lesser occurance. And often the guy you were rooting for was eliminated. But through it all, and I still go to like 8 or 9 events a year, the drags were one of my absolute best times.....

@AutoMotoCha9L

It's a front mount fuel tank
@dustymojave
3 ай бұрын
For drag racing you don't need a big gas tank. You're only going 1/4 mile per trip. Putting the tank on the front made it easy to access. The 1st company that put these small aluminum gas tanks on the market was Dean Moon's Moon Engineering (in whose shop the 1st Shelby Cobra got its Ford V8 installed) represented by the famous "MoonEyes" symbol. Thus such tanks were commonly called "Moon tanks". This front mount Moon tank was very popular for many classes of drag racers back then. Later on safety fuel cell tanks were developed and they got located in the back. So you don't see the front tank on modern race cars. Only on vintage race cars or photos from the 50s through 70s.
