When I worked at a volume Toyota dealership in 1990, they hammered it into our heads to call the customers' monthly payment a "monthly investment." Even at 20, I knew cars, especially mass-produced Camrys, Corollas, and Tercels, were not investments. Now, the 89 Celica All-Trac Turbo 5spd that we took in on trade was a different story. I tried to buy that car, but the GM knew what it was and snatched it up.

I think the issue with the Wrangler for its depreciation, and Stellantis as a whole, is that their dealers simply don’t carry the versions or trims that people actually want. Thus, the new ones tend to sit on the lot while used ones in the trims people actually desire command a lot of money.

Oh come on, no other modern EV suffers from similar battery degradation like the Leaf, which has an air-cooled battery. Modern EVs have liquid-cooled batteries that will last hundreds of thousands of miles before they can be next used in stationary energy storage. And at some point the batteries will be recycled. (Try recycling used gasoline 😂)

The Leaf had no Battery management which is why their batteries died. OK, you showed the Miata 30th anniversary Edition and went on to say the Miata holds 72%...not that one. normal mileage after 5 years the 30AE will be 80-85%. A super low miles 30AE just sold...1400 miles...for original sticker. shoot, low miles 30+ year old NA Miatas are going for 75% of original sticker. Miatas, properly maintained and not rusty, are one of the best values out there.

If you go to a Jeep dealership, 90% of the Wranglers on the lot are 4xe. The 4xe is just not worth its premium price as it doesn’t have enough electric range and doesn’t improve the fuel economy enough in hybrid mode. Plus, potential future reliability issues and greater depreciation, few Jeep buyers are buying the 4xe. If the 4xe was offered at a discount such that it was the same price as a gas Jeep, it might be interesting, but I still think most Jeep buyers would avoid it.

I'm sure in a few more years, the Ford Maverick will be on the list of least depreciating vehicles after five years. Their resale value right now is very strong. It's a compact truck that's just the right size for most households, it's affordable and there's virtually no competition for it unless you count the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The sales don't even compare on that one. But for right now, it's only been on the market for three years. In two more years, I bet it'll still have strong resale value, especially if there's still gonna be no competition for it.

I wonder how much road salt depreciates cars. Once it's been on the road for 5 winters they can start to show especially where a new batch is put down at the minimum once a week. Other times every couple of days. I have seen the engine compartment of an F 150 that looked like it had been on fire.

GMYT, my 1998 Toyota Camry sold new for $17,400 with a worn-out Pontiac trade in. It now has 160,000 miles and the upholstery still looks new, the original paint is fine (could use a buff + wax) and has no leaks, rust or other issues. The timing belt, harmonic balancer and water pump were recently replaced and it still gets the sticker EPA est. 23 city/30 + highway MPG! With a tweak or two it continues to pass 2 year emission requirements. I'm glad it is an appliance that has taken my wife and I across country several times and acts as a daily when needed. We also have a pickup so mileage is divided between the 2. Electric cars are the future but will never satisfy people like yourselves who love high maintenance, noise and smoke!

Put a $7500 tax credit on the MSRP of a Camry and it would have 19.4% "depreciation" walking out the door. It's why BMW EVs hold value a lot more - a lot of the drivers do not qualify for the tax credit when purchasing and they don't suck the way MB does.
