They do these for a living in China, they mold their own GBA bootleg cart, made their own bootleg board, made their own bootleg battery, and eventually make their own bootleg ram chip that could hold the rom. Using a cart dumper you could still get a good dump of a rom from them too just like an actual GBA cartridge. The only bad thing is the quality of the cart doesn't last, the battery to which hold the memory files of those games doesn't last and the chip they used inside isn't reliable for a long time so if you don't dump the rom from it already then by the time you know it the game will get corrupted rendering them unplayable. I know this cause I got two bootleg copies from GameStop back in 2012, both are bootleg of Mario Kart: Super Circuit and Superstar Saga and both work well for the first six months but after that the games started glitching and then by 2013 one of them were corrupted, you can't even get passed the title screen. By 2014 both became unplayable and I was able to at least dump the rom from both onto my EZ Flash cartridge before they got corrupted for good.

Wow, that’s so funny. I was just window shopping on eBay yesterday and I came across a bunch of people selling these for $35/$50. It pissed me off none of the sellers mentioned they were knock-offs. Many even show the open carts with the Nintendo-labeled board which I imagine is to try to suggest they’re legit. They don’t say they are, but they’re lying by omission. Seeing the black blob of paste on the board and the low price are clear indicators of what these things are, but people just getting into the hobby could certainly get ripped off. Like you said Ron, sell all the bootlegs you want but describe them as such. Remember, all real GBA games also have at least one number or letter embossed on the label, visible by tilting the cart.

One of the best features of the Analogue Pocket will be when booting up a cart. If it's authentic then it'll show an info screen about the catridge (game title, year, etc), and repro/bootlegs go straight into a normal boot-up without any fanfare. I personally like having a mix but prefer repro's with distinct labels/plastic casings to communicate it's not the original thing. Sometimes the art looks cooler too. Otherwise, the labels of fake ones seem to be off either being too saturated, incorrect tone, and lower quality sticker overall

To check if a GB/GBC/GBA clone game can save: Save the game, turn of the Gameboy/GBC/GBA/ whatever you are using to play the game. Remove the game cardridge, wait about a minute then put the game back on and turn on whatever game console you are using, then check if the save is still there, then load the save and play for a while. If there is no crashes then congrats your clone game can actually save!

Its just one of those things for buyers, that unfortunately we have to be aware of fake games and how to tell.

In my experience most of this GBA repros use flash ram to save so no problem worrying about your save games. Exceptions are some Pokemon games and some multicart repros as far as I know (Castlevania Double Pack repro cart still uses flash ram, I dont own any Pokémon so I cannot say). SNES and GBC repros dont requiere soldering for a battery change, and some SNES and N64 sram games can be custom made to use flash ram instead or battery which is a nice upgrade. Another nice bonus is you can purchase carts of Japanese release only games fully translated into English (or in Spanish too in my case) and play them in original hardware like Wonder Project J2 for N64 or Mother 3 for GBA, or Gundam Wing Endless Duel for SNES (great 2D fighter). Yes I know about flashcarts/everdrives I have many of them but I still like the old ritual of owning a cart putting into a console and sitting on the couch/bed and playing them

something important about bootlegs in general; even if they save they may crash randomly during use. during the era of cheaper gba games i bought a couple on ebay for about $15 that seemed legit only to find that they crashed after about an hour of playtime. saving regularly helped but in games like metroid it can be hard to get to a save point in time
