Cause moderation is a bitch. Let’s break it down bit by bit: steam is a huge platform with millions of people using it. There is roughly 50,361 games on steam (at the time of commenting) that are of varying quality. Valve has roughly 360 employees total. If valve were to actually verify each game that goes onto their platform, they would probably end up with a human rights violation. Also, this would lead to a stagnation in the various other things that valve is working on (such as new games, VR hardware, VR software, Linux support, steam big picture mode support, steampal, etc). The main thing I’m trying to get at is that valve can’t really do human moderation as it would eat up too much time and resources. AI moderation isn’t a good solution either. If youtube, a company that is being backed by the largest tech firm in the world can’t get it right, then how could a relatively tiny company like valve hope to create a moderation AI that could even begin to help with steams current issues. You also have to add in the fact that video games are much more complex than videos. If KZitem’s moderation bot still makes mistakes on a consistent basis with something as simple as a video, then imagine the horror and frustration that would arrive from a steam moderation bot. Steams current approach is honestly far better in the long run for both devs, players and valve. An AI would be expensive as hell and it might not even work. As for human moderation: the employees have families ya know. As for why they are still up? Most likely for a similar reason as above, valve doesn’t want to make mistakes. First, how would valve define a game that will be removed? Is it based off of player count, review scores, steam discussions, etc? We can’t use player count as it usually fluctuates for a lot of games, we can’t use updates since the devs could actually be working on a massive update for the game, we can’t use review scores as they can often change massively over time (think NMS), nor can we use discussions, etc. again, steams current approach is honestly the best one out of them all. If you want steam to notice a bad game, report it and spread the word. You also have to remember that a company of only 360 people are running not just steam but also CS:GO, TF2, Half life Alyx, DOTA and all of the other programs that I’ve mentioned above; they have a lot to work on. Moderation is extremely hard, to the point that even companies far larger than steam struggle with it. It isn’t a simple on or off switch, you can’t just turn it on; you’ve gotta pour shit tons of time and money into it for something that will be broken within hours. Moderation just isn’t worth it. Hope this clears some things up!

@BigFry, if coding/blueprinting isn't you strongsuit. You can also try QA or Playtest manager. You can still come up with the game mechanics and see if they work as expected. The coding comes overtime, and if you can't code you can always make prototypes of game mechanic concepts to test with blueprinting. So I hope that if you want to make your own game you will give it a try.

I'm still wondering why they all try to make fps titles when CS:GO is free. Like let's be honest, beating living legend is almost impossible. You need to think about something new: Overwatch is hero shooter that is balanced around abilities (and made by old Blizz), COD is based around your movement (and made by Activision), Battlefield is based around vehicles (and made by... I don't remember who), Rainbow Six is based around slow tactics with wallbangs, drones and abilities (and made by Ubisoft). You need to beat one of this guys to became competitive in fps market. Or spend millions on ads... If you think about making NEW AAA FPS THAT WILL CHANGE GENRE... Please stop.

To be fair though, there is no guarantee of anything in early access. I've purchased dozens of early access games. Some of them fail. Some of them pan out into bigger games. However, I never really felt I "wasted" money since nearly all of the games I got some form of entertainment out of them. I think it comes down to doing your research and how far along the game is.

Rogue Heist, haven't heard that name in a good while. All though I want to comment on what's said at 6:20 - replied this to another comment here as well, but the game used to cost 20 (standard) to 100 bucks (most expensive edition), with pre-orders open and set, right before launching - we're talking days before the F2P change and from my knowledge very few received any refunds, for those or for the microtransactions (one of few things that worked at launch) bought before the game shut down completely, right after they promised and launched the "fix rogue heist" campaign. Developers went completely AWOL for a year straight, only to come out and say the game launches on MPL, riddled with microtransactions with a added BR mode, where it still sits today. On the side note, I've never seen a community behind a product this patriotic and defensive. You can say, no - imply one bad thing about the game and suddenly you have an entire continent at your back, unknowing about it's inheritance. Kinda funny honestly.

As someone who knows nothing about game development, I never understand the "we need more resources" excuse. Especially if the development studio is basically a couple of buddies calling themselves "indie". You have the software you need to develop the game more because you made what you have right now, so just...keep developing the game more in that program? What resources could you possibly need if you're making your game on your pc with software you already have?

The thing that always gets me, is when people say "People need to start somewhere" or "it's their first try give them a chance". I'm all for that it, if it's reasonably priced or free considering the state they usually launch or remain at. People deserve chances, but it seems like in the videogames sector is one of the only realms you can expect CONSUMERS (Steam early access, and bad Kickstarter games) to pay you to learn how to create a product.

I think you were quite harsh in regards of Rogue Heist. I mean, they did it free to play. They sincerely said there they had no funds to continue with the PC version. They mentioned going mobile, but not abandoning the PC game, but to be able to have funds. It's not like they sold their soul but simply, they are exploring other options, and they were open about it. It's only a scam if they get your money, and I don't think those devs should be ashamed of themselves.
