When I discovered Sally & she said it helped her sleep, I gave up chocolate, nuts, seeds, spinach, tea, my beloved black pepper, cinnamon, potatoes, curry, etc. Been on this diet about 10 months now & still can't sleep. When I found out it can take up to 10 yrs to get rid of all oxalates, I almost stopped. But I'll keep at it, though at my age I see no hope of any sleep.

Fascinating. I'm carnivore now for a week and ordered my first electrolytes because the leg cramps are waking me up at night. But I'm forging through. I dropped a kidney stone a few years ago and that's how I discovered oxalate poisoning. I did keto for years and lived on spinach, almond flour and almond milk, etc. Now, I have back and body aches. I'm not going to give up and will suffer through the reappearance of hot flashes, leg cramps, etc. The weird thing is my stools are healthier than ever, and my strength training loves the higher protein and fats. Also, my appetite is so low. I usually am dreaming about my next meal soon after the last. I forget to eat and have done OMAD on accident. I have not been a drinker, smoker, or sugar addict ever in my life, so watching this about oxalate poisoning explains a lot. Thx so much for this!♥️👍

I'd like to start by saying thank you very much. You made a video about common problems when switching to carnivore diet when I was considering it, oxalate one really made me look into THAT one. Ever since I learned about oxalates I switched to carnivore immediately. I have arthritis, or so they say, but I think it's oxalates at the heart of it. I did eat several bad offenders before (almond, spinach mostly, but with peanuts and chocolate as well). I was really looking for a diet that would help with arthritis symptoms since I realized a while ago that doctors don't really know what really causes arthritis and inflammation so I should do my best to look for resources for what I could find to help me myself. And of course I hated the thought of eating several pills every day and putting extra pressure on my liver for all eternity so when doctor wanted me to add another pill with severe possible side-effects, I rather doubled down on my effort for looking different way. Here I am, two weeks into carnivore and definitely I have somewhat muddy urine, symptoms otherwise are mostly same as ever, some parts of me feel better but few feels quite bad. But at this point this will take time anyway, I am just lucky I was always eating everything and did not mostly like vegetables much, but these few years I had eaten a lot of keto-bread with almond and spinach (sigh) to offend my body. Time will tell how things go, I'll stay on pure carnivore diet unless I start to feel too bad. If that happens I have a bit of dark chocolate to smooth things over. And not giving up black pepper just quite yet... :) EDIT: A fix in the timeline of things.

I've been increasing meat in my diet for a year and a half. I am doing a 30 day meat only challenge now. I have been researching a bunch. I'm a bit disillusioned while listening to Sally say that she is dumping oxalates 8 years later, reminds me of vegans that are still 'detoxing'. I want to feel healthy and energized all the time. Sometimes I think when I attempt to be healthy it leads to me feeling shittier. LIke when I don't care about diet at all I generally have good energy levels and every once and awhile get a stomach ache if I over eat some processed foods. But when I am trying to be strict such as carnivore I get headaches, brain fog, lethargy. I am going to keep to only meat for at least a month then see how I am feeling. But if I am going to be dumping oxalates for years is sorta makes me feel like maybe its not oxalates and rather something is lacking from the diet. I believed raw alkaline veganism or fruitarian was the ideal diet for so long then came across contradicting information. Diet is so confusing.

@nikkie_slaughter

I totally get what you're saying but it is true that our bodies need to dump the bad stuff and have time to heal. Just like if you're coming off alcohol or drugs, you'll feel worse before you feel better. And also like with alcohol and drugs, it's easy to think you feel fine and not realized the damage being done until it's done a lot. With that being said, though, even on my worst days of carnivore I felt better than when I was vegan. I could tell I was stronger and that my body was healing. I started being more productive, even when I felt crappy. There were signs that I was moving in the right direction, unlike with veganism where I felt worse and worse and kept trying crazier things out of desperation and got to a point where I literally couldn't do anything. I guess my point is to check with yourself and if you truly only feel worse with no benefits on carnivore, then back off of it - maybe you need to go slower, maybe it's not the right thing for you. Use as much intuition and introspection as you can to see what is best for you and be open to that shifting over time as your body heals. Make sure you are really consuming a lot of electrolytes and water, that you are eating enough, and getting a ton of fat. That made a HUGE difference for me. Oxalate dumping for years is daunting and depressing, but I can see how for me, even though that will likely be true of my situation, I will have a greatly increased quality of life during that time. I've been sick for an extremely long time, almost my whole life, so it feels intuitive to me that it might take me many years to heal, especially after the damage I did with anorexia and a fear of fat starting in my tweens, and then getting into veganism for over a decade. But if you're body isn't saying "yes!" then maybe you have a different path, and that's totally ok!

That book, Diet For A Small Planet, I believe is responsible for all of my dad's health issues. He still to this day believes the gibberish he read in that book. He used to eat huge bowls of uncooked rolled oats with skim milk for breakfast every day, and then wonder why he had constant tooth problems and cavities. Oats are high in phytic acid (all grains are, but oats especially) which bind to minerals in the body and then get expelled. Eventually the body has no choice but to steal calcium from its own teeth in order to keep other vital processes going. The book, as far as I was able to read it before throwing it across the room, recommends planting the entire arable surface of the Earth with monocrops like oats, soy, wheat, and corn, on the (extremely outdated and disproven) theory that that is A) sustainable, and B) the only way we can hope feed the population. Now we know that regenerative farming, which rebuilds depleted soils naturally, and REQUIRES grazing ruminants, is much more viable than Monsanto soybeans as far as the eye can see. Sorry for the rant, but he STILL has a copy of the book in his kitchen! 😟

I lost weight and got of meds, however I then hurt my hip and haven’t been the same since. It always hurts and feels inflamed. I tried so hard to do carnivore, but I cook for my 88 year old mother, my husband and two young adults. So I cook for my family, and feel it my job so don’t get in an uproar over that. But I so want to focus on my health and lower my inflammation to get back on track. I want support but feel I need more exact support than SBA group. I have quit eating wheat. No bread, no pastas. I felt a million dollars since. No more blotting, stomack aches, colics.... I only ate meat and vegetable since . However, i read a book on fermentation. So, i do eat beans sometimes and lentils, chick peas and almonds. The author explained you need to ferment them. Soak them in water for 3 days minimum... the beans then get rid of the acid that are nefaste to the eaters but also to their seedling. So, when you see the bubbles means the oxylate is thrown away by the bean. The seedling therefore is safe to grow. And, the eater, can cook the digestable bean... voila! That is what they do in Africa and the middle east. Their diet is based on beans and millet... They ferment everything.... and they are fine.

So the answer to oxalates is going carnivore? Personally I just switched to low-oxalate vegan foods, as animal products were giving me kidney&galblader pain. Oxalates bind to calcium as they leave the body and they can increase the risk of kidney stones in some people, but taking Vitamin K2 solves that problem because K2 help metabolize calcium to be absorbed by the bod for stronger bone health. Even if we did not eat oxalate containing foods, we would still have oxalates in our body since our bodies make oxalates. In fact, only 20-40% of the oxalates in our blood come from the foods we eat. IF you believe you are eating too much oxalate rich vegetables, boiling vegetables can reduce their oxalate content from 30% to 90%.

As a child I HATED spinach! (more than most kids) and my mom would fight with me about eating it! I was a "fussy eater" but would always eat steak and eggs and chicken. Later in life I found I was extremely oxalate sensitive, after eating tons of greens and almond products on the Paleo diet, and suffering from kidney stones, arthritis etc. I think kids instinctively know what they need /don't need , at least before they become addicted to sugar. Going in a more carnivore/keto direction now!

I think Sally answers her own question in her website; where she mentions that the oxalates are made within the body as a waste product with no known function. But she mentions earlier on that oxalates bind to other things like heavy metals or excess calcium and puts it through the kidneys (and other tissues when its overwhelming). Kidneys are one of the ways in which blood is purified and detoxified. That's your answer, it's the body's natural detox pathway. BUT it is broken with oxalate overload. If we weren't oxalate toxic, the oxalates would carry out other toxins properly. So the take away is that oxalates are not demons, they are beneficial in moderation, but cause problems when there is an excessive amount.
@ascendtoaesthetics
2 жыл бұрын
just because we produce them endogenously, does not make it beneficial to eat them? especially knowing it's only produced as a waste product...would you drink ammonia or urea? 😅
@teril.3485
2 жыл бұрын
@@ascendtoaestheticsI get your point. But maybe it's a bit more complicated than that. First, the definition of waste ought to be recognized as more of an excess resource (albeit however useless, but maybe further studies will enlighten us) than a form of garbage or poison. The problem with too much oxalate pressure is the absorption rate not the mere presence. The body is resilient and has developed ways not to absorb excess oxalates. Just because it harms a dysfunctional gut doesn't mean it will harm a healthy gut, so that doesn't mean oxalates are entirely bad, perhaps they have a purpose. As for the beneficial aspect, that was mainly an exercise in thought. As always, needs more study. Unrelated other interesting waste facts: we need a healthy level of Carbon dioxide in our blood to trigger natural breathing even though we exhale CO2 as a waste **product** - that waste is now a resource for plants. Also, people are improving their health with fecal transplants.

Interesting. I had a similar thought except mine was more along the lines of us not producing oxalates but detoxing it if we have it in abundance. I think your comment is interesting. That would be great if it were true, which seems possible...

It was actually the green smoothies that was my tipping point... that made it obvious to me that many parts of my body were inflamed. The (at the time) newest and greatest way of being healthy ended up being the trigger to educate myself way beyond the Standard American Diet (SAD) bovine poop. After 60-plus years of taking in "their" lies I found that I needed to keep educating myself daily anew to counter the effects of the previous indoctrinating.

Addendum (a comment to my daughter): Well, beyond the current and future benefits of the information in the video that I shared with you yesterday, I am pretty sure the "snowing" effect happened to me as I got deeper into Low Carb High Fat (LCHF)... well, now being Carnivore(ish), that being nearly total zero plants of any kind and form in the nutritional diet. It baffled me to no end where all the white powder was coming from in the apartments and then this house. It was eventually everywhere, but it was mostly in my bedroom environment. And it was heavy to the point of constantly having to vacuum or dust it up off the floor and everything else. So, a couple years of that seemed to be all that my body needed for the "snow" has disappeared. Very interesting how the body works... in this weird way also.
