I’m 60 years old and if the world collapses, do I really want to be one of the remaining? Don’t think so! BUT, I do see the availability of food items becoming hard to get. Look at covid, and way back when our area had a power grid go down. People panic. I’d like to have enough to last a month. You teach so much, so beautifully. You should have your own tv show! I am very lucky because I have a full finished basement. After 2020 when I couldn't get meat, I invested quite a bit for shelves, buckets, mylar bags, storage containers and 2 more freezers. We have made this a lifestyle. I also have sensors that are easily accessible so I can monitor the temps in my freezer and the basement. I am so glad I did this when I did. I have saved so much money by rethinking the "new normal". We have had a situation where we needed to use the preps when my son who lives with me had accute Liver failure. That was January 3 this year. He just went back to work last week. I pray people try to get prepped because there really are no safety nets. God Bless 😊

Buckets Only vs Mylar Bags in buckets: I have had two buckets split open at the bottom, both of them were unused. I guess it was just age. If I had stored grain in them without mylar bags, I would have lost everything and created a huge mess. It’s now bags in buckets only for me and my house. Mylar bags protect the grain while the bucket protects the Mylar bag. YMMV.

It feels so good and to me it is fun to go do a little straighting, or reorganizing, or pulling old forward and putting new back. I keep a couple cloth tote bags that I keep one in the kitchen and one in the pantry. Then when I need to shop the pantry more than I can comfortably carry I have a sturdy bag to get the goodies. Leisa, definitely NO fruit in my jello - it must be smooth haha. On salt storage, any ideas on how to keep it from turning into a chunk of rock? And yes please a video on baking soda. BTW I have noticed while searching house plans that so many pantry rooms on an outside wall have windows. No, no, no. Same with master closets, who wants sun shining in fading their clothes and degrading food supplies A tip if you have rice that gets bugs and you can’t afford to throw it away. We are lucky we get fairly clean food in this country, but I have lived overseas where the rice always had some bugs. Put in a pot of water and swirl and skim them off. It takes a bit of work but if you have no choice, it works. Honey - find a beekeeper close to you for best benefits and buy by the gallon if you can afford it - it costs $75 here in Dallas area. I split it into pint and quart jars for storage. For any who might not know, don’t worry if it crystallizes, it is still good.

A tip: maple syrup only lasts forever if it is never opened. Once opened it can get mold in it and often does. My solution is to store it in small bottles instead of large ones and only open a small bottle at a time. If mold gets in it , the strands can grow through the whole bottle so I throw it out.
@berniemeyer1643

I bought a gallon when travelling through maple bush country. I gave it to a young couple thinking I was giving them a treasure. When I later asked them how the maple syrup was going they said it went bad and they had to throw it out. I was upset that they were so careless with it. My parents would keep a large container of it in the freezer. It would stay liquid and they would top up a small bottle for the refrigerator as needed. The pint jug I have now that I bought from the grocery store says to refrigerate after opening.

Many of these channels have recipes for dried meals in a jar. You would take some of those recipes and adapt them to how you cook. For example, I do not have the pressure canner or 20,000 glass jars that they say y'all need to fill to have food for a year. So I put mine in vacuum sealed pouches. Many of the dried meals in a jar are for the instant pot. I do not have an instant pot. I do have a 6-1 rice cooker that operates on my pocket solar USB power bank or the truck and other alternatives. So I put together meals so that I can put 2 cups of water and the contents of a pouch in my cooker and press a button for a quick meal. I chose 2 cups because water is sold in bottles that contain 2 cups in my area. Recipe example Fried Rice Parboiled Rice Dehydrated carrots Dehydrated peas Dehydrated onions Soy sauce powder. I can add meat if I chose later. I can add other vegetables if I want.

People are so concerned about bugs in their wheatberries, rice, etc. Insects are ground up to make flour along with the wheatberries and no one has died from ingesting them. When you're ready to use your berries, rice, etc. just fill a basin with water and dump in the berries or rice, swish the basin around and the little critters will float to the top where you can skim them off with a strainer. Problem solved. I never pack anything into mylar bags because I feel the chemicals will eventually leach into what you're trying to store. When you put items in the freezer to kill bugs and then take the items out, condensation will form on the items and bring about fungus growth and mold. I tried that method on corn kernels and got some nice fuzz on the corn. MUCH worse than eating bugs. I store all my dry items in glass jars with oxygen absorbers and desiccant packs -- desiccants on the bottom and O2 on the top. Bay leaves didn't work for me. My 2 cents.

Oh yes! My Mom ALWAYS put ACV to the bee stings for us when we were growing up and I continued with this for my children. It indeed helps with the pain. It also helps with the discomfort of sunburns. It also is a good hair rinse for those of us with auburn hair!! It makes the red shine!!

Thank you for this really important video!! All (well, we probably don’t NEED sugar, but it sure helps make the ‘medicine’ go down😂) these ingredients are real foods, from the earth, that are necessary and vital for a healthy body and knowing that we can stock them for a very long time is invaluable!! You have such a wide and popular platform and I’m so thankful that you are using it to influence people to live in such a positive and proactive way, Leisa! You are a hero to many, including me. Again, thank you. ♥️

Whole spices like allspice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, cumin seeds, coriander etc… will last forever and will retain their great flavor when ground fresh (I use an old coffee grinder or mortar and pestle).

I saw another similar video that also mentioned dry pasta, along with many of the things you mentioned. I'd like to add dry kool-aid mixes in the little pouches. Just add water and sweetener. But... add some citric acid, unsweetened kool-aid lemon flavor, baking soda, and salt, and you've got yourself a nice dishwasher powder for cleaning your dishes. Add white vinegar as the rinse agent!!!

I have the desire to prep but not the money nor do i have the space. My house is small and i wish i had a basement. Those are non existent in nevada. I have a month or two of stocks stashed where i can find space. My big issue is water. I will not drink water out of plastic bottles due to leaching chemicals and microplastics and it takes up room i don't have. Not really sure how to tackle that issue.

I'm in a tiny senior living apartment in way Northern California. Room and funds are also an issue with me. The last few months, since in shop once a month, I've tried to buy at least a couple containers or large canning jars, and double of one pantry staple (flour, sugar, cocoa, etc.). It's helping me to get a small stock going. I read a helpful comment for storage ideas, but also realized that, since I've been decluttering and downsizing, I can actually store several large coolers or bins under my raised platform bed!

I live in a small small space ... years ago I began storing my foods in coolers..mostly I find coolers at yard sales for a few $$. The food is in mylar in a cooler, the cooler insulates and is dark and dry...I think I have over a dozen... If I put my canned stuff on a shelf or in a cupboard, I put the jar in a paper bag, it cuts the light and gives it some cushion.. I also put mylar packed foods into tin garbage cans, they are protected and dark, I also line the cans with "advantec" bubble foil.. Protect your foods... Great topic Leisa, thank you.

Also to all those who stock MRE's, they need to keep in mind that the higher the storage temperature, the shorter the shelf life. If you store them in a 100° + garage you'll be lucky to get a shelf life of a month much less the seven years that most people expect them to...

I am blessed with solar power and generator back-ups. There are 2 houses here. My house goes from 55 to 70 because it does not have modern conveniences and it is a historic 4 room farmhouse. I use mylar or vacuum sealing bags with oxygen absorbers. I chose LifJoy because they are sold in bulk but sealed up in smaller portions so I know that I need to use 10 at a time. Now, I get whole wheat flour from food salvage and I freeze it for about a week then defrost it. I then portion it in 2 cups because my bread recipes use 2 cups. For Honey I get the real Honey straws. They are cheap and last forever. There are many types of sugar but I prefer turbinado raw sugar. It is not the processed beet sugar. I have vinegar because I use it for cleaning. Salt. I have the curing salt. I have regular salt. Cornstarch is used mostly used for thickening and turning broth into gravy. But my soy sauce is in the powdered kind.

Sprouted grains are supposed to be the most healthy (easier to digest) but are a lot of work if you do it often. Instead, I have tried soaking some of my grains with a dash of vinegar for about 6-8 hours at room temperature, then rinsing and cooking. Pre-soaking is said to help remove arsenic in rice and the anti-nutrient, Phytic acid, which inhibits mineral absorption. Faster than sprouting and little work for most of the benefits of sprouting.
