You need to understand the backdrop of the show. It's set in Northern Ireland during what is known as the "Troubles" . It's a 30 year period of sectarian violence with constant bombings and murders. The British Army has been sent in to the patrol the streets.

As someone who went to a Catholic girls school in the 90s, this show makes me laugh so hard because I can relate. It gets better when you rewatch and catch things you missed the first time. Oral is hilarious if you pay attention to what she's doing in the background. And Sr. Michael is truly the best character.

my whole family is from Cork, Waterford, and Clare, Ireland and we love this show :-) if you aren't aware (it isn't typically taught in American schools) Ireland and England have a long history of a rocky relationship. The British staged the Anglo-Norman invasion and attempted to colonize the land and the people of Ireland, under the regime of England. modern day Ireland is split between the North and South, the North being land belonging to the UK and under the UK laws. Southern Ireland aka the Republic of Ireland is it's own independent country. The girls live in Derry (London-Derry at the time), in Northern Ireland which is experiencing a civil war known as The Troubles. the girls are growing up towards the end of the war and the conflict is heightened, so they are in an active military area. There is a religious element as well, with the Catholics and Protestants. Stereotypically the Irish are Catholic and the English are Protestant. Some of my family escaped to Ireland from England for religious freedom, and their faith is very strongly held. there are more historical references in the show, but this is just a very basic breakdown. it's a hilarious show, I hope you guys enjoy more of it!
@agenttheater5

It's kind of sad that this isn't more common knowledge. Get the feeling the history of Ireland needs to be taught more in schools. I mean if nothing else then just sell it under a title of perseverance - from what I can tell the Irish have been knocked down and then kicked in either the teeth or in the guts repeatedly for centuries, but somehow they always find a way to pick themselves back up again.
@meghan3964
Жыл бұрын
@@agenttheater5 i’m biased of course but i agree! i think that the British Empire has colonized so much and the relationship with Ireland dates to very recently. I wish more people knew about the will and strength of the Irish people, and how much suffering they experienced at the hands of the British in their homeland, and the American people during their immigration. did you know the the Potato Famine wasn’t because of rotten potato crops? it was from the British taking all of the potatoes from farmers so everyone was starving. I wish that was taught more openly, especially due to the recent coronation and it’s controversy. so much was stolen from my family, we had no choice when leaving. my great great great grandfather owned a post office in Ireland where he would teach children and young adults Gaelic, the language of Irish and Scottish ancestors, which at the time was extremely dangerous. the British government had taken over at that point and made the speaking and teaching of Gaelic illegal. my grandfather could’ve become political prisoner for speaking and teaching his native language if word got out.

I know you guys are already on season 2 so it’s possible you’ve already figured this out as you’re watching, but to better understand this show it may be helpful to look into the Troubles in Northern Ireland. This show is set during that time when violence between Catholics and protestants was very high, especially in the Derry area where Bloody Sunday occurred. Just some interesting context to understand what it would’ve been like growing up for these girls.

for some context: This is set in the 90's during the late stages of 'the troubles.' Northern Ireland (where Derry is) was involved in a civil war, protestants v catholics. English people were predominantly protestant - which is why James gets a lot of insults thrown his way - and forced Protestant teachings upon the Irish people. Irish people were predominantly Catholic. I definitely suggest reading up a bit on this time to help you understand the show better. One of my fav shows ever, perfectly balances comedy & serious topics. I'm so sure you'll love it!!

Nice quick call on The Inbetweeners parallel. Technically, they're all variations on the Golden Girls. Michelle/Jay/Samantha/Blanche, Orla/Neil/Miranda/Sophia, Claire/Will/Charlotte/Rose, Erin/Simon/Carrie/Dorothy. It's all the same basic formula. I love that this one takes it to such a specific time and place, and of course, adds the wee English fella.

Their deaths were planned for the record, they were counting on starving themselves to death, Bobby is the most famous because he was the first to die, plus he got elected as a local MP during the strike. Steve McQueen's first movie was about him, it's called 'Hunger' and came out in 2008, starring Michael Fassbender who it turns out is half Irish, half German.
