This is my first time getting robbed in a foreign country, and I just so happened to get it on camera! I had spent two weeks in Ecuador so far and felt no sense of danger whatsoever. I had just been kicked out of the mountains and, on this day, I was supposed to still be deep in the wilderness walking to Cotopaxi. I arrived in the town of Machachi a day before the Paseo Del Chagras, an annual procession celebrating Andean mountain life in Ecuador. I had no idea what this was, what it was going to be like, or how many people were going to be there. All I knew was, as always, I wanted to film and document my experience as best as I could. After spending several hours watching the procession without having any problems, I decided to pummel through the most crowded section of the day with my main focus being on my camera. Completely unaware of my surroundings, I was followed by a few low lifes down a very crowded sidewalk where spaces were tight and nobody had their attention on me. My phone was the only thing in my pocket while my Nikon camera and wallet were in the backpack located on my chest. For some reason, I felt positive that nobody could get through my zipper pocket to steal my phone. I found out the hard way that that was certainly untrue. Oh well, ya live and ya learn and things could have always been worse. I hope you enjoy this wonderful display of Ecuadorian culture as much as I did! 🇪🇨
