Why are they asking for $800 more for wanting them in black? Seems excessive.
@udirub

I asked them about it, here is the answer I got: Regarding the extra cost the Black Edition BRAVURA headphone has a far more expensive and luxurious soft-touch finish, and the Black Amplifier has hand-engraved markings (rather than screen printed as on the Silver Amp) on the front and rear panels and there is a special BLACK EDITION badge on the lid of the Black Amplifier. Also the headphone cable has black LEMO connectors which are a premium price over the standard silver ones.

Two questions: 1) Have you measured the distortion, especially at 100+db? The old Sonoma Model 1 ran out of headroom really fast and distortion past 95db or so became a problem. 2) How much of this sound is due to DSP correction and how much of it is the natural FR of the headphones? The second is important, because you can get top-tier sound by taking a decent enough electrostatic headphone and EQing it to sound neutral. As long as the headphone isn't too ringy or resonant, and as long as the distortion is under control and your amp is powerful enough, you can make it sound really natural and all-around excellent with EQ. I'm using a L700 mk1 in my system - slightly modded - and surprise surprise, when you EQ it to sound like an HD600, it kinda does, except with much higher technicalities. Anyway, nice to see the penny drop for DMS with regards to electrostatic headphones. There are just so many really crappy ones on the market right now and people have the wrong idea over what they're supposed to sound like. They really can sound very natural, lively, exciting, with great bass, while keeping the speed and detail they're known for. Emphasis, however, on CAN. Stax lately has been shoveling out badly tuned crap and it's getting praise because bruh the detail. It doesn't matter how airy or detailed your stuff is, it also has to sound right.
@dannybos7024

1) Why the actual fuck would you listen at 95+ dB
@randomdudeman4782
2 жыл бұрын
@@dannybos7024 You don't. But you have some music where the dynamic peaks are that high while the rest of it isn't. And you want to be able to reproduce them. Also, if you equalize, you need your headphones to be able to play above normal listening level cause you'll be lowering the overall output to avoid clipping.

My brother in Christ why would you EQ to an HD600. Just say neutral

The L700 is built like crap though. The price difference is in the build and the fact that the headphone is near perfectly tuned out of the box. EQ is too cumbersome for most people.

@@randomdudeman4782 Ancient reply, but I promise you that no one competent is leaving in 25 dB peaks in their music, that's something you remove during the mastering process. It doesn't exist. I say this as a recording engineer, we remove peaks like that in a heartbeat. Keeping the entire rest of the track at -25 dB just to blow your ears out occasionally is not good mastering. The second part is fair, but you should not be boosting more than 6-8 dB anywhere if you don't want unwanted distortion. 90 dB is the absolute max you'd EVER need any system to go, and it is purely for EQ reasons. If you're not EQing, 85 dB is plenty.

I have a Burson Soloist GM that I use as a pre amp for a pair of AHB2s, and a nearfield setup with a Questyle CMA Fifteen dac amp so was looking to Expanse as my end game. This throws a wrinkle 🙂... The Expanse could be used on both the Burson and Questyle, or even with my iFi Diablo so a big advantage (and less $). But my goal is really endgame headphone so priority is how it will play. Any feedback would help and ideally if you can do a review of the Expanse and compare to the Bravura system, using the Expanse w the Burson Soloist GT 🙂, that'd be very interesting! Thanks!

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Additionally, the measurements would seem to contradict DMS’ subjective impressions of the bass and sub-bass. Perhaps, as he noted, the seal of the headphones is paramount to this sub bass extension and slam (otherwise this shifts the peak into slightly higher frequencies) and during the test the seal wasn’t 100% optimized? But I’m always inclined to believe my ears and use measurements as a secondary, or even tertiary value.

@@stevenkoos I have the Bravura here, these headphones absolutely seal the front volume between your ear and the driver, therefore the "flat" response down to 20hz, (same principle applies for the glued Audeze pads and their bass extension). I guess the hump centered around 75 is due to DSP, but not sure. Anyways, even when trying to EQ the Subbass below 60Hz up about 5dB, there is a notable drop off in sub bass volume below 35Hz, so no, you wont get the deepest sub-bass. On the other hand, the midbass sounds phenomaly fast and clean, no bloat due to no excess boast above 100Hz. And trust me, the impact is actually great.
