We still watch 2 episodes every week night on MeTV. It's kinda sad to know the heros didn't get along. I guess it's understandable, to us it's just entertainment but to them it was a job. I can imagine showing up on set, only to stand in the background or say one tiny line. To me they all brought something to the party to make the show a success. I have my favs in the cast.. and Carter was probably my fav hero lol

That's bunk. The video above paints a false picture, as all of the stars have said. Any notion that they didn't get along belies what every single one of them ever said. To the contrary, they got along magnificently under a lot of pressure. Read Arlene Martel's interview online. Or real Cynthia Lynn's or Robert Clary's books. Clary is also online (Google the videos) saying how incredibly they all got along.

Always wished they did a concluding episode of the series where we see Hogan and his heroes help bring about allied victory in Europe. In the 60's they would just end a show in the middle of the story and just leave you hanging. The only exception was when they concluded The Fugitive and even then that show's exec producer had to practically beg the network to go along cause it was considered such a weird thing to do back then.

@JosephScarbrough
5 жыл бұрын
Admittedly, this is one of the reasons why I find the later seasons to be more preferable over the earlier seasons: if look at the first season of HOGAN'S HEROES, most episodes feel like they're nothing more than just Hogan bantering with Klink and Schultz, while the Heroes kind of remain in the background waiting for something to do. Later seasons seem to put a little more focus on the exploits of our Heroes, while the Germans are utilized more or less for comedic effect of not knowing what's going on. I was just watching a recent interview with Robert Clary, and yes, he did confirm that he felt that at times, he had very, very little to do as LeBeau, other than basically say, "What are we going to do now, Co-lo-nel!?" I hadn't heard these comments from Larry Hovis about his role, but I really feel like Carter was one of the characters who suffered from Flanderization over the run of the show: at times, it felt like he just got dumber and dumber - sometimes to the point you wonder if his brain even functioned properly. In regards to Ivan Dixon, I've heard two common stories regarding his departure: one is that he got fed up with Bob Crane, Werner Klemperer, and John Banner always being postured above the others; the other is that he wanted to move onto other behind-the-scenes positions such as producing and directing . . . but both stories have one thing in common: part of his decision to leave stemmed from feeling like nothing was being done to further develop and expand his character of Kinchloe beyond the typical, "Message from London, Colonel." In a way, I guess this explains why later seasons would also occasionally have episodes where one specific Hero was the driving force of the main plot, and got a chance to have an episode dedicated to them. For Ivan Dixon, these would be episodes like "Is General Hammerschlaag Burning?" and "The Softer They Fall"; for Robert Clary, these would be "LeBeau and the Little Old Lady" and "Cuisine a la Stalag 13"; for Richard Dawson, we have "Sticky Wicket Newkirk" and "How to Catch a Papa Bear" to name a few. I think the final two episodes were actually great for the Heroes: "Hogan's Double Life" has them basically in despair over how Hogan is going to get out of the predicament of him being identified by the Gestapo who are closing in on him; "Rockets or Romance" has them having to think for themselves and come up with a plot of their own to get rid of a rocket in camp, while Hogan is off on another related assignment. Despite being canceled, either of these episodes make for great series fauxnales.

One of the best supporting casts ever! They sang (in good harmony), danced, did voices and impressions, and clicked as a unit from the very first episode. Ivan Dixon's role as Hogan's second in command is often overlooked when people discuss race in early TV. Larry Hovis's transformations from bumbling fool to arch Nazi officers (including Hitler) was awesome. Robert Clary Was the most musical of the four and often had a chance to show that off. And it's really surprising how few legit acting jobs Richard Dawson had in his life, because he was such a talent -- and some of those magic tricks had to really be him, right? I wouldn't change a thing -- apart from keeping Dixon around for the last season. I recently watched the whole series over again (I'm 56) and it's as fresh as it ever was.

For the most part, Hogan's Heroes was a very harmonious set, according to an Arlene Martel interview, and what Cynthia Lynn and Robert Clary said in their respective autobiographies. Clary said his best friend on the set was John Banner (Sgt. Schultz). He said Robert Crane (Hogan) could be strong in his Republican opinions, but polite. I did hear that Leon Askin (Gen. Burkhalter) and Sigrid Valdis/Patti Olsen (Secretary Hilda) did not get along. What made the show so great was that it wasn't just the three main characters (Hogan, Klink, Schultz) who were so great, but all of the side characters were phenomenal, too. Hochstetter and Burkhalter were sensational, LeBeau, Newkirk and Carter were all solid. Kinch wasn't bad, either. And the guest stars generally were very good, too. I think the show would've been number-one and never moved to alternate time slots if it had been converted into a one-hour show. That would've allowed for more creative plots and allowed the side characters to get more time. But the greedy beancounters started messing with Hogan's Heroes' time slot, and did away with top-rated shows like the Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, Petticoat Junction, et al., because it was deemed harder to sell big-time items like modern luxury cars, etc., with the "uneducated" audience these shows were supposedly drawing. Hogwash, of course.

Life. People don't want to stand around and watch other people work. It is also true that everybody wants to move up in their careers. Hogan's Heroes, like all shows, was temporary. They are going to be looking for more work eventually, and getting more lines can help you get that. I would have been surprised if there had been no conflict, but disappointed if it disrupted the show, which it apparently did not.

The biggest knock I have about this (my all-time favorite) show is that the 'extras' are basically ignored! In addition, it would have been great had there been an episode or two where there would be more inner acting with other barracks throughout the camp. They could have had 2000 prisoners on parade; specialization under some 'huts' where wine is being produced, or a bakery is up and running, supplying pastries and breads for the local shops near Hammelburg, etc., etc.. The possibilities are endless. I know I am analyzing too much, but hasn't anyone ever considered what all the other prisoners are doing to pass the time? Another 'regular' German officer or two, and a few more corporals and privates with the 'occasional' appearance and lines would have added another element to the program.

The problem with a show like that is that to have less people on it wouldn't be believable. There were hundreds if not thousands of prisoners in a camp like that, and individual barracks would have been filled to capacity. A half full barracks would have never been believable. It was suspicious enough that everyone was able to get by with everything they did anyhow. There SHOULD have been a LOT more guards around than just Shultz, who was always looking the other way. And many if not most would have been gung-ho, they would have been too afraid of being reported THEMSELVES if they WEREN'T.

The stars of Hogan’s Heroes were Bob Crane, Werner Klemperer and John Banner... that’s it. Everyone else was supporting cast. As such, how could they expect their part to outshine the others and possibly lead to a spin-off series? I understand that everyone wants to make a name for himself, but that takes time and you must pay your dues and do the very best at the task at hand and the bigger jobs will come with time. For most of the people in Hogan’s Heroes, the series was their first role on TV. Some had more success than others, but every last one of them continued to work after the series was cancelled. Richard Dawson probably had the most successful career of all of the “regulars” in the supporting cast. He went on to be a regular on Match Game and eventually became the host of Family Feud. Some of the “recurring cast members” like William Christopher, went on to a supporting role in M*A*S*H and Larry Hovis enjoyed air time as a panelist on a short-lived game show called Liars Club.

There was no hint of it in the finished product though, thankfully. But lets face it, Hogan, Klink, and Schultz were the three main characters, so of course they would have most of the dialogue, along with the guest star of the week. I’m sure no one complained when they got the parts. Ivan Dixon didn’t get many parts after Hogan. People sometimes seem more satisfied doing nothing rather than doing something the very best they can…

I loved this show and find it unfortunate that the cast members felt they were slighted by not getting as many lines as they wanted. As long as their pay was constant and the ratings were high enough to keep them on the air, those are the things I would have been concerned about as an actor.

9G, In a 30 min sitcom has only 22 minutes. 8 mins of commercial typically (max FCC). They can run less commercials, 6 minutes but not typical.

I love Lucy was 26 1/2 minutes according to the son of the shows creator. Many shows are longer or a little bit shorter based on what the channel wants to do whether it cuts out Segments for commercials commercials or not. But 26 1/2 minutes it definitely more than usual

For continuity’s sake the show was always set in cold weather. Notice that they are always wearing cold weather gear. Carter is always wearing gloves to hide his wedding ring .

There is one episode that has an extra with no speaking lines. He mostly stood behind Hogan & stared somewhat cringely into the camera. Unfortunately, I cannot recall the episode. I've been curious who that extra was and why he was cast. Any of the HH fanatics know the episode? Thank you. If I find out, I will edit this post or update my query in a later rick nineg upload

The ironic thing is, all of the Heroes under Hogan's command, Carter, Kinch, Newkirk and LeBeau, were important and made the show work. It's a shame that they were so focused on who got the most lines. It just wouldn't have been the same without any single one of them, and this was proven in the last season when Kinch was gone; the series was just a little bit less enjoyable because one of the original Heroes wasn't there any more.

Newkirk was not in the first three episodes of Season 2, I think (might have been season 3). Did you even notice? And, of course, in season 1 there was still a lot of shuffling around trying to establish the best fit.

Also, I felt bad for Klink and Schultz. They would always flirt with Hilda/Helga, but she left them cold to flirt with and kiss on Hogan! Not that they knew WHY, just that she wasn’t interested. For the record, I would totally flirt back with Klink or Schultz, depending on which one was around. Klink has that distinguished look, and he looks good in a uniform. As for Schultz, he’d be fun to give a hug too; just like a fluffy teddy bear. 🤷🏻♀️

Unfortunately part of what makes actors excell is their egos. You can't have one without the other, but I sure wish they would try.

What, if anything, is known about the actors who played the other prisoners in Hogan's barrack? In each episode, I see the same faces. Quite often, I see one actor who plays a prisoner AND a German guard. Who are they? They never receive a mention in the credits. Would be interesting to know. Thank you for the excellent information!

I have it running in the background every night from Metv. Maybe that’s what it takes to make a good show. Jealousy on the set. Gilligan's Island, Home Improvement, Happy days, many good shows had this problem,

Dear rick nineg: It's rather hard to believe that Larry Hovis, AKA "Sergeant Carter," felt cheated. He did a splendid job imitating various German officers, even Hitler, which he did in a uniquely, comedic style! Whenever he donned a German uniform he cracked me up! Although, many times he didn't seem to be respected by his fellow POW's, he WAS the "go to" guy whenever Hogan needed someone to trick the Germans. And he did it very convincingly. I can't recall any of the other guys coming off as funny as Larry Hovis! Yep, "Carter" was one of a kind!

Carter was also the explosives expert. I think Robert Clary bemoaned that at one point - Carter was the explosives guy, Newkirk was the pick-pocket, Kinch on the radio and LeBeau was....the chef. And as you note Carter (and Newkirk) could disguise as Germans.

I always thought Ivan Dixon was the real brains of the group. He was always the go to guy when even Hogan had questions. I hated when he was replaced.

I think Kinch was the highest ranking of the enlisted men, as a Staff Sergeant (pretty sure he outranked Carter). The problem was that they couldn't have him do things like go to town and blend in as a German civilian. "Do I look like a German to you?" he asked in one episode. As such, he would only go out at night or stay in camp and monitor the radio. He was really a technological whiz, though, and was really key to the operation. The manufactured some episodes to highlight him, but it was always very forced. Did you know that in the show, he had two names. In season one, at one point he got a letter from his draft board classifying him as 4F. That letter was addressed to James Kincheloe. However, in the episode with the psychic woman in Paris (not Maria, but later one), she called him Ivan Kincheloe. Kinch grew up in Detroit and was an accomplished boxer.

Who is everyone’s favorite character? I’d honestly have to say Kommandant Colonel Klink. Poor guy walks right into all these jams that Hogan causes and then can’t figure out why he’s in trouble all the time! How inept do you have to be to be arrested and held prisoner in your OWN stalag?! Answer: Wilhelm Klink level inept. The little things he does like that thing with his arm and/or his “Mmmpf!” sound he makes when he’s frustrated...those are the little details that help make the show for me! I’m definitely glad he won 2 Emmys back-to-back; Werner Klemperer is one hell of an actor and I’m sorry I never got to meet him or anything else. He’s a definite grade-A ham too, but I guess when all you’ve ever done up to that point is dramatic films, you kinda have to be. The way he’d always walk with one hand behind his back, holding the riding crop and slightly stooped forward was cool too. So far, my favorite episode was when they built the boat ‘officer’s club’ in the first season. His reaction of not even finding a proper word to describe something reminded me of when I deal with my siblings! “Take this...mmmpf!...and get it out of here!” And after a few times of his “No one has ever escaped from Stalag 13!” bit, I literally see John Banner AND Bob Crane in the background rolling their eyes. More grade-A hams, I’m telling you.

Loved this show! Thinking back it seems to me the supporting cast had tjust the right amount of lines. Maybe Richard Dawson too many lines. I didn't like how insulting he was 95% of the timr to Larry Hovis. His was a strange role. High tech but lacked plain ole common sense.

There was almost no friction whatsoever. The video is a lot of rabble-rousing bunk. Read the autobiographies by Cynthia Lynn and Robert Clary. Google was Clary says in his online videos about how great everyone got along.

Jerry Seinfeld had a simple concept about lines on his show. He didn't care about always getting the punch line. If it sounded funnier coming out of the mouth of another cast member, he was all for it. It was about the humor, not the human. Yet, it was the most human comedy on television.
