My SC430 story… When I was 12 years old I accompanied my grandfather to Hennessy Lexus of Atlanta to take delivery of his new 2006 LS430. While he was doing the paperwork I was par-oozing the showroom. When he had finished the paperwork he walked over to find me sitting in a Palm Beach edition SC430. He asked me which of the cars I liked best and I said “This one!” He told me if I got straight A’s between that time and the time I turned 16 he would buy me one. He passed before I turned 16 but guess what….I got straight A’s whereas before I had been a B student. Maybe I’ll have one yet one of these days.

I swear the drift and/or stance community has ruined old Lexus. At least in Florida where I live, finding a stock Lexus is impossible unless you go to a retirement home. But the marketplace is full of slammed and drifted Lexus but still asking crazy prices. At least the SC430 isn't as abused as the SC300/400 so i wish you luck! Honestly, old neighbors or retirement homes are a great place to start, most times they are well taken care of.

I found one that had been taken to the Lexus dealer every 5000 miles. Owned by a gentleman who was about 60 when he got it and is in his 80s now. It did need valve cover gaskets replaced, seats have a few tears, but he’s already done so many things for this car over the years. 220,000 miles. I’m very happy at $6000. Engine is amazing. Handles well, smooth as can be on the highway (yes there’s a tiny bit of wind noise). You will spend some money on gas with the V8 taking premium.

Ahmed, I was telling my son this past Sunday about your channel because he was telling me that he met an Iraqi couple who worked with his girlfriend who is a dentist in Washington. I live in Houston but have a sister in Chicago and have been waiting for an opportunity to be the first SC430 on your channel but I lost out! However, this is a great first SC video! I bought my 2004 SC430 in 2021 from the original owner with 221k miles who serviced the vehicle at the Lexus dealership every 5,000 miles. You are spot on regarding the people who have owned these cars and how special these cars truly are. My SC430 is my daily driver and now has 244k miles and I plan to to keep it until it has at least 310k (500k km). I try to do as much of the maintenance myself and I made the mistake of replacing the front struts with the KYB aftermarket despite the original shocks being just fine. I also have replaced the radiator, vacuum lines, lower control arm #2's, power door lock actuators, power steering hoses along with performing all the required maintenance. Your videos have been a valuable resource for me!

Thanks for this review! Last year I parted ways with a Mercedes 280SL euro. I drove it for about 20 years. Had a challenge finding a mechanic to work on it so I sold it to a friend who always admired it, and has the skill to service it himself. I wanted another convertible, but not a German one so I was ecstatic to find a 2005 SC430 with 35,000 miles. I no longer lose sleep thinking about finding a mechanic to work on it because it’s a Toyota and my local independent garage will care for it well. I replaced the timing belt (Still original) and just got an apple car play sound system which is awesome! I’m 68 and expect the car will outlast me. :-)

The original SC was over 20 years ahead of the competition. 98-00 are the years to buy. Coil on plug ignition, oil control valve timing, switch to simple Bosch ABS system, and they did away with the tons of vacuum lines in the earlier models of the UZ and JZ engines. The lower control arms are crazy expensive on them. The ball joints are not replaceable. The JZ engine is a breeze to work on. 92-98 12 disc changer is also very prone to failure. 99-00 got bigger brakes, a better 6 disc cd changer, and perforated leather seats, etc. I had a 98 and 99…loved them both. The SC430 is a great cruiser. I test drove a 2008 but did not buy it because it did not meet my expectations as to how special and unique it would be to drive. The dashboard is kind of ugly and cobbled together whereas the original SC had a superb dash design. Also for a flagship model for Lexus at the time, for the money it should have had smart keys, parking sensors, and a backup camera standard. They also did not offer Bluetooth audio until the final 2012 model year. The car felt very slow compared to my 05 LS430 when I expected it to be a bit faster. I have been on the hunt for a 99-00 SC400 black on black with under 90K mikes for years now. They were selling for as little as $12K around 10 years ago. Nice 98+ SC300s were less than $8K. A Lexus dealer in my area sold a 2006+ SC430 with the facelift and 6 speed transmission for only $14K with 92K miles in the rare tiger eye bronze color back in 2016. Timing is everything. Prices are probably not going to fall for both generations. Nice ones now start at $10k and $22K for the first and second gen, respectively.

Owners got a VHS tape by mail of the car about a week before it arrived. The very best car I’ve ever owned. The build quality was unreal. PS: SC300 owners were constantly asking me if I’d let them have my VIN number so they could buy the rear spoiler, which the SC300 did not have. I really like the SC, but here in the UK, we have to pay road tax every year, and the amount you pay is dependant on the year and CO2 emissions... I suspect that part of the reason Hammond was unkind to these is that they're in the top tax category, which means yearly tax on some of them is £735 (about 960 US Dollars). Add to that insurance, which for me would be the equivalent of almost another 1,000 dollars, it's hard to justify. For comparison, my Lexus GS is about £300 to tax every year, and that's considered expensive.

For the SC400, another issue that you need to keep an eye out for is the power steering pump leaking. While it's not too difficult of a job to replace, the kicker is that if left unresolved for too long, the power steering fluid will inevitably leak all over the alternator. Then you're left with more headache and an even bigger bill!

In the past 29 years and 6 Lexus vehicles as well as multiple friends and relatives having also bought Lexus on my recommendations, everyone has been happy with their choices and purchased further Lexus vehicles down the road. 29 years and hardly any problems. Routine maintenance. Obviously I like the brand. They are very comfortable daily drivers and not sports cars. If you want a German style sporty vehicle - then go live at the dealerships and have disposable income for repairs, as a number of my friends found out. I had a 98 LS400 and sold it after 18 years. All it needed was a side view mirror switch that needed to be replaced. Everything else on the vehicle worked. Amazingly nothing else had to be fixed. Original everything other than rims.

No one can bash British cars because they don't make them anymore, because no wants buy cars that break down in a few years. That is why British reviewers like Hammond and Clarkson have a complex, and why they love to trash amazing Japanese sports and luxury cars. And they as well as American reviewers protect German cars with all their flaws because Germans are European, meaning white, so German cars function as surrogates for ethnic pride. Yes, it is racism.

Great review AMD. I had looked at the SC300, SC400 and SC430. Ultimately I ended up I purchasing a 2002 SC430 in July 2022 with 93K miles from the 2nd owner who had it for about 18 years where it was in good condition, from an older couple who used it as a spare car at their lake house. When I purchased it I made sure the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump had been done (luckily it had been done at 89K miles in 2019). I have had it for 2 years and put 10,000 more miles on it and the only thing that it had needed in 2 years was tires, new rear brakes and rear rotors, a passenger side power door lock actuator & the side mirror doesn't tilt up and down (which I already knew it needed before buying it). So nothing out of the ordinary to sort out on a used car purchase. I always use OEM Lexus parts on it (such as the rotors, brakes, and power lock actuator). It has been a pleasure to drive coming from a 2006 Miata. So while not sporty, it is more grand touring or sportish, I just love taking road trips in it or cruising around on a sunny day as it mainly driven on warm, dry days and minimally driven in fall/winter except to run it once every week or two in the fall/winter. Sitting in the soft leather seats this thing eats up the miles and you can drive it for hours and still arrive at your destination relaxed and not tired. It loves to cruise at 80 mph all day while covering the miles in quietness and has nice get-up and go 60 mph+. Before buying one you have to determine your use case and motives for wanting one. I wanted a convertible with some style, power, some more room, and reliability. While I liked the Miata for fun driving around corners and around town, it was not comfortable for road tripping in and space was limited and wife hated it as she felt unsafe in the small Miata and could feel every bump in the road as it was on H & R lowering springs. SC430 is like driving around in your favorite lounge chair topless.

The SC300 and 400 are cousins of the Supra even with the interior design and everything else you said. I've always felt that the SC430 is the precursor to the LC500 in quality and certain design ques, such as the buckle on the front seats and the seat design and cabin colors. My dream is to collect both the LC500 and the SC430.

Top Gear had an anti Japan bias. I quit watching it because of it. Always praising European cars no matter how unreliable they were, as if that issue did not matter at all. And anything from the USA, forget about it.

What are you talking about? They liked Evo, GT-R, WRX, Honda Element, Jazz, LFA, Murano, Toyota Aigo, to name a few. Clarkson even won a challenge with Mitsubishi Starrion. He also drove MX-5 in middle east.

Had the pleasure of owning a 1997 Lexus SC300 one of the finest cars ever built by Lexus. Loads of power and very DIY friendly. It never let me down. Only issue was an oil leak. I called it my Leakus. Turned out to be a disintegrating magnesium valve cover. Found a new set out of a warehouse in Los Angeles. Installed them and never had another leak. Im glad im not the only person whom noticed the extreme build quality and weight of the doors. The car was reliable, smooth, fun, and a vehicle i will always appreciate.

When I was working for Lexus here in Australia, on the SC430 the roof rubbers would creak as it was getting dried out , I was trained by a X Jaguar restoration manager who was working for us , he showed us which I still use today on my 95 Crown pillar less doors , we used a product called sorbolene moisturiser cream , it is for skin , but this has no silicone and does not attract dirt , worked beautifully.

Thanks for reviewing the SC430. I've been thinking about a next car... I just lost my 98 Sebring Convertible due to engine failure (owned it for 8 years and it was pretty decent). I've been eyeing the SC430 as a good replacement 2nd car. My daily is an 08 RX350. Thanks for putting in the time to review these older model Lexus's.

My independent Lexus mechanic has two original SC300 models. He is restoring them. One of my ex-girlfriends had one with a manual transmission, and it was swift off the line and a dream to drive. It had the 3.0 L inline 6 2JZ-GE engine.

I've owner three since the early 00's. 1JZ, 2JZ, and 1UZ. I still own the 1UZ. They were only around $3k here in New Zealand for a while. Excellent cars. A couple of blown ECU, weak door trims and leaky brake fluid on the alternator in the 1uz are the only main problems i've had.

When we were 20 and just married, we bought a 1958 corvette. I fell in love with the hardtop/convertible. I’ve had many unique cars over the years and always wanted another hardtop convertible. We went to the “Auto Show” in 2001(?) and I sat in the brand new Lexus SC 430. I found my dream car! It took me years of research and guilt for the lust for this car. I finally bought my 2008 SC 430 last year. It is everything I’ve ever wanted in a personal car. Everything. Plenty of power, quiet, smooth, quality build and sweet, sweet refined looks… No regrets. This one will take me to the home…

I had the pleasure of driving one of the SC430s for a while back before 2020. It was an auction car not well taken care of but everything worked, the convertible top, the engine, transmission truly a beautiful car. It was before I knew much about DIY mechanic work or Toyota/lexus quality. It was my friend's car that he lent to me and he did exactly what AMD said not to do, aftermarket suspension parts, aftermarket radio, after market brakes, after market wheels.

In 2003 I traded my 2001 IS300 for GS 300. In the showroom was CS 430….so beautiful car, same front as GS , but was a sport car , not much room for back seats. GS give us so much pleasure, we sold him in 2017 in perfect condition because we moved to Europe. The new owners still driving this car with no problems. Lexus is the car. Right now we drive Lexus CT 200 h for seven years. Only oil change, no one issue. I swear 👍🏼

I own one and I can say that it is one the best cars I have ever driven. It is a keeper for many more years to come! Like he said in the video, people will not appreciate the car until they drive one and spend time with it. It is amazing and it feels like having 2 different cars in one with roof up and down. And nowadays, people look at it more than ever before and it is a rare car on the road for sure! I love it!!!

I’ve driven a couple of the SC430’s in the late 2000’s as a Toyota tech. I was disappointed with them at first. A bit floaty and not as sporty as I expected. But then I realized that wasn’t the purpose. It’s like tank on the road in a good way, just floats over bumps and never felt stressed. It’s really a great car besides the bubbly looks IMO. The later ones definitely looked better.

What I've always disliked about the SC430 was the tucked in wheels. Really makes it look whimpey. Besides that, it was a stunning car.
