Wouldn't you want to do the handling necessary to install the decoder before removing the handrail protections and installing the detail parts?

New toys are always fun. 🙂 Personally, I'm not a fan of the 'sound' locos. The speakers are always tinny, with no bass whatsoever, and it doesn't sound great to my ears. I look forward to the day when the sound can be transmitted (via Bluetooth or similar) to a proper set of speakers so they can be heard properly. But that's just me.

@@claas-hinrichgosel2242 Can that be purchased and installed independently? I've looked at their site, and they don't seem to sell it on its own - only as part of their (American) locos. I'm in the UK.

I quickly became a ScaleTrains snob. It's what most of my locomotives are. Most of those are Rivet Counters, but I also got some Operators that blend nicely in consist MU or DPU positions. They are definitely worth the money

I'm impressed at how easily the decoder installation went. Clearly, ScaleTrains has put a lot of thought into their design. Also impressed by the sound you get out of that teeny tiny speaker. I model in HO which has the luxury of much larger speakers, therefore much richer bass. Overall, very nice indeed.

I was in Chicago last weekend for a family visit and stopped at the Museum of Science & Industry to see the HO layout. Dozens of these in HO scale and BNSF orange were on the layout. I just had to find some in N scale, which led me out to Lombard Hobby on my way back to O'Hare on Sunday. Co-owner Andrew Fidone greeted me as I entered and treated me like a VIP. To make a long story short, I ended up buying (2) of the DCC ScaleTrain Tier 4 GEVO locomotives with LokSound decoders at a very reasonable price. I'm looking forward to running them on my layout. The detailing on these is fantastic btw... Ron

I don't know why, but the locomotive DCC sound reproduction on my laptop was just awful. Very shrill and low volume. Your voice comes over perfectly. Any ideas. Love your channel.

Jimmy, I'd be curious to hear your decision making process when selecting decoders. Obviously, you need a decoder with a Next18 connector, but what made you choose the Soundtraxx decoder over, for example, the ESU LokSound Micro? I see that ScaleTrains installs these on their DCC+Sound models, so they should fit; and they retail for about $35 less. I know nothing about N scale DCC, so I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Very nice models! Don't own any Scale Trains yet, but definitely looking to down the road once my children get older and are all over 14 years of age (sometimes they have an itching to go warp speed and cause spectacular derailments on the train table).

Was it just my session - but the sound recording of the loco sounds was not good - not saying it did not sound great in your room. Anyway, Is there a cost saving in installing a decoder yourself? It was a couple of years ago the last time I looked, the cost of the ESU Loksound Micro was about price for the factory installed. Obvious if want a particular sound decoder other than the factory installed one.

I do need to probably do some adjustments to the sound CVs in terms of volume. The interesting thing is that you can’t buy an operator series locomotive with factory installed sound so you have to do it yourself. The only ones you can buy from Scaletrains with sound installed are the River counter series and up. Those are about a $100 difference in price.

I love my ScaleTrains diesels. I have stopped buying any though, because I have too many. But if they release the NS Sonic-Bonnets, or a BNSF in Santa Fe Warbonnet scheme... I might not be able to say no. It's good to see that it's so easy to buy the DC versions and install my own decoders.

Very cool. Congrats. Curious how easy speed matching two decoders will be. I had trouble with a XL and a Digitrax because XL systems had a lag or delay lag in it, where as Digitrax responded instantaneously. Seems like they had different scales for momentum.
@gravesclay

Momentum is programmable on most decoders. Should be able to adjust it, or turn it off and just feather the throttle.

There is a setting for the ScaleTrains locomotives for something like "delay starting locomotive". Basically it delays the movement until it finishes playing the start-up sound file. I can't remember the exact setting and it's hard to find, but once you change it they start instantly, just like my Digitrax, TCS and NCE decoders. I had my ScaleTrains locomotives for almost a year before I found that setting. 🙄 I found it using JMRI and looking though all of the tabs. Anyway, now I have a ScaleTrains/Atlas consist that works great. I have a few videos of them running together on my channel.
