Speeding up/eliminating humans from menial/repetitive work is where the power of automation lies, but it also requires consistency to operate well. Digging a trench in very rocky soil would likely be beyond the scope of this system for the foreseeable future, but where it's suited to operate it'll be such an amazing force multiplier. A huge part of robotic operations is developing and discovering techniques that can be reliably used by automation, that's why it pays so well, and why automation is so exciting since it frees humans up to do work only humans can do

Even rocky soil won't be an issue. AI improves by being trained. When the AI makes a wrong dig, the operator will correct it, it will learn and no longer need a person.

Malarky. You people watch too many Sci Fi flicks. The only thing AI will be good for is to blackmail you by creating your image/voice to say or do something you didn't. Great way for cops to clear those cases.@@SomeUserNameBlahBlah

I do Maintenence in robots that operate very similar to a miniature forklift. They have the potential to be very safe, however due to some shortcuts taken in the safety department, we have had a good number of injuries. Rather than using geofencing, we use QR codes on the ground and safety sensors of questionable effectiveness. Seeing things like this is amazing but also makes me laugh at the shortcuts my company took to try and catch up with the world of automation

Literally taking jobs away from 10 blue collar workers and given it to a white collar worker that they’d want to have an engineering degree or something unrealistic. Eventually automation will be apart of everyone’s life, but what happens to the people that wont be able to make wages and survive because they don’t have the finances or means to undertake expensive degrees? We need to be careful with our advances, or all we will have across the world is billions of poor and thousand of rich people

Such a cool video! I wonder what the limit will be for human operators to robotic heavy equipment? It was mentioned he had two at one point, but could he reasonably be responsible for managing half a dozen? And if so, how does that increase jobs for people? Any productivity multiplier often creates job losses. Really cool tech though and definitely the future we are heading towards.

It trades many less-paid jobs for fewer higher-paid jobs. You go from two or three operators (and a dude with the grade stick) to one higher-paid operator, but your labor is still cut way down.

the software can break, and after you hit the emergency stop button, you might want to reset it manually, also loading(driving) the excavator onto a flatbed truck probably still need to be done manually

It IS needed, you saw it needs someone to route a path, what if you have to take it down the road to another construction site? You route the entire street and stop the transit for that or do you just drive it yourself?

well yes, but this digger was built as a manually operated one, they just attach the big black box to it and it becomes robotic

@@hanstun1 I'm not against new technology, I'm against wealth hording and artificial scarcity.
