The hills of vermont are alive and well with people and machines constantly building new trail as part of the Velomont trail project. But as a mountain bike enthusiast who enjoys riding my bike up mountains and down with atleast intermediate level terrain to keep myself entertained on the way down the velomont doesn't have much for me as it's built as a beginner trail and once you've ridden a mile of it, it all blurs together. But, what it does do is allow you to connect things and what they've done in Rochester VT is build a black diamond called Rube's Run(it's not a double black even though it says that) trail with features off the side of the velomont. That combined with existing trails in the area the velomont offers ways to connect these trails and do big loops or even shuttles like we did on a friday evening.
Trails like Rube's Run is what we need more of in New England, while the velomont is great for the masses, tourism, bikepackers, etc. we still have a massive gaping hole in our trails here in New England of not catering to the expert rider and it's getting harder and harder to find any trails that pose even the slightest challenge to the expert rider. That's the reason we are seeing alot more embrace hike-a-biking in our mountains and will continue to as land managers, the state, and USFS don't recognize the growing need to offer greater outdoor recreational opportunities for the next generation of shredders! If you build it, they will come!
