arkham series stands out as one of the best sound designing. my favourite gliding sound was AC's also combat sounds. then comes AO, the electric shock globes really sounds so freakin amazing. then the best of all AK. from destroying the last tank, glide sound after release of grapnel boost, and diving and gliding upwards. the sounds that cape makes it so satisfying to hear. not to mention batmobile's afterburner, eject, battle mode sounds. so fantastic. i still love arkham series. The thing about Arkham that really impressed me the most was the point when you notice that the situation of clothing of batman from start was completely fine but after big missions its torn, tattered, bruised and messed up when you come to ending. I mean that’s just a poor design choice in between devs. But i agree it does make a difference though. The grappling animations seem pretty identical just in Knighhts it’s not as polished to not show the jarring Transition/in between motions as shown in the Arkham series. But past that you’d think folks(devs and producers)! would see a good idea and great execution and think to just repeat and replicate those results.
@yungebola5524
Жыл бұрын
@@MrSquishy0 It's not about physical mass (both of these are just 3d shapes moving forward slowly), It's about the details. In Arkham Knight the camera dynamically moves with the subject (batman), bobbing with each step, adding emphasis to each footsteps. The animations are long, flowing, and seamless and the sound design also imparts more details that immerse you further; loud footsteps with multiple different sound effects that trigger, so each footfall sounds unique and close to what we experience in real life, also varied depending on the surface he makes contact with. Compare it to Batgirl who has a short, stiff walking animations with no variation or other visual flourishes, so you can clearly see the animation loops. The camera is fixed and doesn't emphasise anything, and the sound effects are muted and samey, you can hear the repetition. Hell even look at the pedestrian to the side, he doesn't even have shadows. Just in that one clip there's a WORLD of difference between the level of care that the Arkham Knight devs took to create an immersive, realistic world, and the Gotham Knights devs who I personally believe just did the bare minimum to meet their contractual obligations and get the game out on time. I just want to add that let's not forget that Arkham Knight had an absolutely terrible launch too. Performance issues across the board crippling the game's success that couldn't be addressed in a timely manner beacause they were dealing with their own pressures to release the game, but under rough edges you see a project filled with love and care. Nowadays, big open world games like this are formulaic as ever and created to tick boxes instead of providing an immersive experience.

The technology was more limited but the artists were incredible. It's kind of like how the original Jurassic Park movie has such incredible CGI for the 90's. The technology was very primitive but the guys who made it were industry veterans with decades of experience, they used all that knowledge and experience and then applied it to the new CGI technology. For example the guy that oversaw the animations had never done computer animations before but he was one of the best stop motion animators in the world. As such he knew exactly how things should move realistically.

The difference is art direction and aesthetics. Most normal people don't see art direction or aesthetics as separate from graphical fidelity. So as not to bore people, the simplified reason of why games "don't look/feel good" nowadays is because technology has become a lot more accessible and cheap compared to before. In the past, if you wanted to make a good game, you needed at least a certain minimum level of skill, knowledge and experience JUST to make everything work at all. Technology could not compensate for mistakes or oversights, and we had to get extremely creative and smart. Nowadays, technology can do a LOT of the heavy lifting so people don't need to do insane tricks to get things working. This is good, for the most part. Saves a lot of time and man hours. The issue is that some people (and you see this a lot with inexperienced UNREAL devs), just decide to let the tech handle it without giving it a second thought. So they just throw all their assets in without proper budget or optimization. And this results in increased hardware requirements for the players. The second big issue is that there are diminishing returns to realistic graphics. Beyond a certain point of realism, it just costs too much compared to the gains.

the Chair for my animation and game design program says it best; When people want "Realistic" they mean they just don't like what your art/game looks like. I've had clients ask me to design a scene of an apartment in Los Angeles with the golden gate bridge seen from the window.... People want realism but often forget that actual realism is boring. True artists know how to look at realsim as a spectrum and know when and how to exaggerate for the sake of appeal, this is something that suits or AI will never understand.

I’ll explain the mentality of Batman. He fears if he kills someone like the joker, then where does he stop? Does catwoman deserve to die because she steals? Where do you draw the line? Batman fears that if he kills, he will then keep killing every criminal. Ultimately becoming a mass murderer. And just to clarify, you understand he is psychologically messed up right? This is a grown man who dresses up as a rodent and beats people up at night.. he’s knows he’s mentally unwell so he doesn’t want to become a killer.

The major difference is one game was made with the tools that did not allow it to be rushed and still have a level of ""polish"". Due to modern engines doing all the "work" for devs, studios push more stupid deadlines which makes them rely more on the engine's own graphical "enhancements". Games like Arkham are prettier and more optimized because every single location you visit were carefully built within the limitations of the tools handed to the dev, which makes them both prettier, and more optimized. A concrete example of this is classic Fear's lighting fidelity. In short, game development has become a much more streamlined, automated system where productivity takes over product. Efficiency over efficacy. Think of it as a mass produced t-shirt compared to a finely crafted hand sown one. You'll miss out on a lot of the itty bitty quirks and details that makes the hand sown one so good, and really shows how low gaming has stooped lately.

Getting those hours in to 100% every mission gives you a sense of accomplishment. I’m still looking for all of the riddler trophies to be able to capture him and activate the real protocol but whatever it’s fun and I haven’t gotten bored doing it

After an extensive analysis, I have been able to conclude: a) the graphics in reality are side to side on quality, the key difference is the art style, camera angles and lightning, still, this also goes to show how impressive Arkham night is! b) The seas are both there, I’d say that Arkham night’s looks better thanks to the lightning, but I’d also like to say the movement of the water in Gotham night is a bit better c) the Batmobile is cool af

Gotham knights has a higher resolution than AK iirc. However, AK looks so much better because the city looks lived in. There are great effects and the lighting is so much better like you said. The streets are actually streets that wind around making them much more visually distinct. I couldn’t play more than like 4 hrs but GK was a basic grid system with ugly stroads that plague Northern American cities.

It just shows how important art direction is! Even with the most realistic visuals, if you can't capture that proper "feel," it won't matter. And also the reason why certain older video games have held up so well.
@ChesireWaltz
Жыл бұрын
Yup! One of the best pieces of advice I ever got from an art teacher was unless accuracy is critical it doesn't need to BE right it needs to look and feel right. Is this how the shadows would really look? How water would really shimmer, or fabric actually fold? Does it look appealing to the eye and not jump out as wrong? Then go with it.

Even CoD 2 looks amazing too, I actually prefer its visuals to CoD 4 as they feel like they've aged better in a weird way (the original anyway, remaster still looks amazing, and CoD 4 still looks great, but it's a bit drab in sone spots, but maybe that's just me).

I think the idea is you aren't really "calling" the bike, you're just deactivating its optical camoflage to reveal it next to you. The effect is pretty indistinguishable from just having the bike teleport in, though (which is literally what the game is doing). And it's certainly not as badass as calling the Batmobile and then after a few seconds' delay hearing the roar of the engine and seeing it come flying around the corner
@clairifedverified2513
Жыл бұрын
Wait, that effect *isn't* supposed to look like someone dying in fortnite??? I. Huh... I mean, I feel like there are a lot of ways you could convey that it's coming out of camouflage, first one that comes to mind is that thing that marvel movies especially do with big ships having tons of little cameras or mirrors on them, if you had a moment to watch as it kind of "shimmered" into your view that would be genuinely sick, watching as this nondescript patch of environment is revealed to be hiding a vehicle, but instead we got.. That.
