👌Living in the present is a very popular idea today. It seems intuitive and self-explanatory. We live in the present, when we do not waste our energy and time on regrets and memories, on endless plans and dreams. We care little about what was and what will be. We do not reach back and do not reach forward, but instead direct ourselves entirely towards mastering those simple things that are available here and now.
“Being in the moment” for the Buddha had nothing to do with reflexively catching a high and concentrated enjoyment of objects of perception. With this approach, the mind continues to be in the clouds as before.
As long as we are free from the future, we are not particularly concerned about the results. We do not have hopes, and therefore do not experience bitter disappointment after their collapse. We don’t chase victories, we savor every bit of life and do what we “get excited about.” What is the use of soul-searching and endless reflection on the nature of existence? Why do we need expectations, torment and feverish attempts to certainly change the world and other people? We relaxed, moderated our appetites and ambitions - and everything became extremely simpler.
