The coils used on all modern BMWs and Minis are, shall we say, crap. They regularly go bad and once you start getting misfires caused by a bad coil on one cylinder, you might as well just replace all the coils because you'll eventually have problems with another. I am choosing to replace them as preventative maintenance. The OEM supplier for these coils was originally Bosch and a few years ago Eldor became the newest OEM supplier, so that is what I've chosen to put on.
The sparkplugs on an N54 engine are special and due to the direct injected nature of it, they do not last very long so it's recommended to change them every 45000 miles.
