I had a friend who was an American woman who fell in love with a man from Iran. I suggested she really learn about his family, laws of his country, and his culture before proceeding further. She didn’t listen and married him here in the states. On their wedding night he beat her badly for not wanting to let him do a particular thing to her body. She came running to my apartment. He at first approached very angry and aggressively when I answered the door. Then when my husband stepped forward, he calmed down and acted like it was all a misunderstanding. She didn’t go back that night, but she did go back to him. 3 weeks later she was taken to the ER in a coma because he’d beat her so bad for using paper plates. He got his own beating that time from the neighborhood. When the police came for his beating they arrested him in the ambulance. He went straight from the hospital to jail and then right back to Iran. Thank goodness she was still in the hospital and didn’t go with him. His brother tried to come get her when she got out of hospital, but again the neighborhood stepped in. The brother left and she divorced that man. I’ve heard so many stories like hers that didn’t turn out this well. Take care, women. Know who and what you are marrying into, no matter what religion.

A true and scary story. The man owns the woman, and the child. If this guy wanted to, he could have killed his wife. The real lady was lucky she was able to leave there. Sally Field played Betty Mahmoody vary superbly. Not Without My Daughter 1991

@rosinchenpapa it's what her biography says. That info came from Betty Mahmoody herself - so tell me again why it isn't true? Are you insinuating that you know better than the woman who ACTUALLY lived it? How arrogant. A month after her captivity, she and her daughter escaped to the SWISS embassy. "I told Mahtob we were free, we were going home," Mahmoody recalled. "But then the woman at the Swiss embassy told me 'You are an Iranian citizen. You have to return to your husband and abide by Iranian law."" "No one told me when I married an Iranian how it would affect my citizenship. I became a dual citizen of the U.S. and Iran. But Iran did not recognize dual citizenship". Swiss. Not manned by Americans either btw So tell me again you utter muppet, how you know better than the woman who was actually there!!

I’m an American citizen and I married a Jordanian man in the U.S.. My mom was always so nervous that I would go to Jordan and “have my passport stolen.” We were married for 7 years before I ever even went to Jordan. I asked to go for the summer with the kids. He didn’t even come, he had to work. All went well and I decided to move to Jordan. We’ve been back and forth the last 4 years now. Last year I randomly came across this movie on Amazon. I had never heard of it before. It was a really good movie, very intense and sad. I realized that situation was what my mom was afraid of for me. All is well though Alhamdulilah ❤ there’s lots of bad stories but lots of good too ❤

I had an Iranian friend at work, she was so kind and sweet and gorgeous and I was shocked to learn that she was actually a doctor in Iran before she came here, but her husband was abusive and she couldn’t divorce him. She made it ti America and tried to bring her son with her but the Iranian government gave the husband full rights over her son. She told me she’s never allowed to return to Iran to see her son so she just keeps in contact with family and hopes that one day when he’s old enough he will come to see her. I was heartbroken for her. Such a strong woman who’s suffered so much but remains kind and genuine.

Please don’t generalize. Also, laws by a few authoritarians who gain power in a country do not reflect the people who live under those laws. This story was about an abusive man who duped his wife into a situation he knew would entrap her. Unfortunately, she did not research the laws of that country before she went. But it is not indicative of Persians nor is it indicative of Islam. As well, to generalize about “the way things are in the ME” isn’t okay. This is an anecdotal story. If I told you a horrific story about an abusive American man who used local or state laws or systemic contacts (good old boy system) plus pressure from the local church to subjugate and entrap his wife, it wouldn’t be indicative of America or Christianity, right?* I know a number of Iranians (both men and women) who are gentle, kind and proponents of equal rights for all. They are not misogynists, nor are they bigots. Ditto with Persians from Afghanistan and India. This is an excellent movie and compelling story. The problem is that many individuals in the west have used it as “proof” to indicate it is a cultural and religious norm. *BTW, if you want laws and institutions in the USA to uphold our freedoms, vote Blue. Project 2025 and Schedule F are a real thing and I am utterly ashamed at the religious leaders who are backing it and pushing it on our nation. If Trump gets in, we will have white nationalist rule in this country and it will become a rule by the Christian Taliban. True followers of Jesus will recognize this and denounce it vehemently.
