I use this song in my Developmental Psychology class that I teach at college, by having students listen to it and pick out the lyrics that detail the genetic, biological, environmental, family, and personal choice factors that influence how we develop into who we are. It does not matter if students apply the same lyrics to different factors; the point is that we have multiple determinants to our personhood and one of those is free will or choice.

Your description of how Home Free knows what a song needs is exactly on point. They always arrange the harmonies and assign the voices for the best portrayal of the lyrics and mood of the song itself. They leave showing off for their very entertaining live shows -- wish I could see one myself! Home Free is my favorite of all the a cappella groups so popular right now. I love your understanding of what makes them so great. Please keep digging into their vast catalog!

Just went and listened to the original by John Mayer. There is absolutely no comparison. For me (my own opinion) the guys of Home Free are singing head and shoulders above the John Mayer version. That is my feeling about so so many of their covers. They don’t cover a song, the improve and elevate the song.

This is one of the most beautiful covers, I love this song. Not only is it a fantastic song by John Mayer, but as is often the case, I like Home Free's version better than the original. I don't know how they do it, but they do it very well. Great reaction!

More often than not, I prefer Home Free's covers to the original version of most songs. They have covered songs that I did not like at all, but like their version of it. I think people feeling that way speaks volumes to their talent. They are just great at every genre they sing, and amazingly with no instruments

I love Home Free's version of this beautiful song. This is in my top 5 songs by them. They really brought out the emotion of it. Tim's lead is amazing with his deep bass. Also love Rob & Chance's solos plus the great harmonies. And Adam is tasteful in making the simple sound of pounding his chest & thigh. I believe we can change our course in life. We don't have to make the same mistakes as our parents. We can choose to rise above it.

I love how Home Free keeps a lot of their video environments simple--allows the focus to be on their incredible acapella vocals. Their 4-part harmony is already peerless, as far as I'm concerned, but their 5-part harmony is even more impactful❣️🎼🥰🎶❤️

No need to apologize for the emotion they evoke with their exceptional vocalization that makes you think instruments and insane harmonies are all happening at times you are not expecting or prepared to encounter as they bring the words alive in way you have never heard before. Their arrangements are sensationally good and they own the presentation in a new way that just wow you!!! They simply take a cover and make it new and make it better every time. ❣ Subscribed Thank you Nick for reacting to this song that simply brings those emotions to the very raw edges of our mental faculties with "LOVE" . 💟

Oh my goodness. I have 2 young friends, 18 & 20 years old who love country music. WHAT! I've never liked it. But today's country music is not like the old fashioned country music I remember when I was young. Anyway, I listened to this song today, and it breaks your heart. My mother has never been interested in me. Only my brother. She's a narcissist. My father was murdered when I was 7. My brother spent the next 40 yrs in and out of prison. Drugs and whatever. I never wanted their lives. I've always thought, maybe I am more like my father? (traits and personality, not his lifestyle) I have found True love in my friends. Love that I didn't get from my family. Many families took me in as their family. It does break your heart when your mother isn't interested in you. I hate that jealous, competitive, sick love. But, we all have a choice to make, to be like them, or let it wash out in the river and be a better person. I'm so glad you had good parents.

You should check out John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes from fown under "When something is wrong with my baby." And the cover from the Beetles "Help" with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. John is a legend here. He's had No.1 songs in 5 decades. Jimmy Barnes sings an amazing song in his 80s I'm stone cold in love with you with Joe Bonamassa on guitar. Check him out. You guys are missing out big time. We've grown up with John, he can sing any grene. I have heard so many people listening to him for the first time saying he's the best singer in the world.

Hi Nick, love your reactions! This is one of my favorites from Home Free. These guys are so individually talented; and then collectively they just click. Their humble and down to earth nature lends itself to the sound. They like Elvis feel the music and it becomes a message from the heart no matter what song they do. I don't know if I mentioned in another reaction but, if you go to KZitem and pull up The History of Home Free; they have 7 videos that are each about 1/2 hour that tells their story. It tells about where each guy came from and tells about all the people that have been in the group from its inception clear up to where they are today. It's very interesting and funny. They at one time almost gave it up. So glad they didn't. There's no way you can be in a bad mood after listening to these guys. Thanks for what you do! Have a great day!

This song hits home for me because I had 2 alcoholic parents who I eventually lost because of it. Unfortunately my sister and brother followed the same path and I lost them too. I chose to break the cycle and never drink and I am so glad I did. I guess that’s why I appreciate Home Free’s version that sounds hopeful at the end. We all need some hope in our lives. That's the great thing about HF: they focus on the message of the song and not on how amazing they are, and that makes all the difference! Yes, they can still dazzle us, but there's always a reason that they do so. They are so humble in their craft, it's never about them but about which voice(s) will make the song and it's message come out the best. Take Me Home, Country Roads (kzitem.info/news/bejne/tq2ryJyefnWcpoIsi=UisMfHzAHD1lYydI) is a good example of this. They spent years working on getting that one just right before they were willing to put it out to the world.

This is the one that HF became my heroes with. I was in a very dark place for a long time and so isolated. The first time I heard it I sobbed my self into a Migraine. After, I felt 20 yrs lighter and started reaching out and being involved in life again. It just hit me what the real questions were that I had been worrying about and isolating my self from actually were. I can't thank them enough for singing with such clarity with such honesty that it reaches out like "finally someone understands". Mental health traps you because not many will truly listen and are impatient if you can't express your self clearly. This was the bridge I needed. How do I ever Thank them for that? I guess I'll just tell my story.

Welcome to the Home Free rabbit hole! New subscriber here. If you've already explored Pentatonix and Geoff (VoicePlay too?), then this group brings you up to 3 of the big 4 on KZitem in acapella. Where Voctave is a larger group without a beatboxer (that you won't even miss), and VoicePlay is a little more theatrical at times, and Pentatonix is more pop with a HUGE audience, Home Free is the next-door neighborly can-do-any-genre comfort food. They are definitely a favorite of many, myself included although I've listened to all of them as well. They are at times the most serious and yet the goofiest and most transparent of the groups. They have an incredible sense of humor and also purpose with a heaping dose of patriotism. A couple of tie-ins for you, given who've you've already reviewed: "Ring of Fire" with Avi Kaplan, "Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget" (a goofy original with an Avi cameo), "Elvira" with the Oak Ridge Boys but arranged by Geoff Castalucci. Their cover of "God Bless the USA" with Lee Greenwood and the US Air Force Band is worth a listen, as is "Butts Remix" for a little more goofy shows off country, rap, and everything in between. And remember, even with 'goofy', they never undersell the performance. Bottom line: Pick anything. It's all good and you can't go wrong. Again, welcome aboard...

I think it's Home Free's ability to convey the emotional context of a song that puts them on the next level. Home Free is also ego-free. Regardless if one of them wrote the song (3 of them are song writers) whomsoever fits best is the one who sings it. For example, Austin wrote "Give Me a Sign" and doesn't sing lead on any part of it. I'm glad they did one of your favourite songs justice! Thanks for playing this & your reactions.
