Considering where that Mainstay was it can't be a Patriot. Too far behind the lines for the Patriot's range. Also the Ukrainian Air Force said they used an S-200 for this one. Man is that three Mainstays shot down now? Russia didn't exactly have a lot of those AWACS birds to start with.

All the topographers in nam and the surrounding region probably having flashbacks of Operation Linebacker II, and all the hard work they had to do to redraw the terrain maps afterwards. Granted, without us leaving craters all around the world, I am sure that a lot of topographers would go out of business.

I was a bit over 1 month old when Neil took his giant leap, and I remember watching the last Saturn V headed to the moon. Mom and dad were all excited, and i asked whats the big deal? They shoot rockets all the time... Mom said "they are going to the moon." To my 3 year old mind I assumed we had always gone to the moon, and we always would. Then the 70s happened, the 80s, and here we are with me being a gray haired veteran of far too many useless conflicts and we finally put something on the surface again. Just don't take me back to when plaid bell bottoms with polka dot huge lapel shirts were the fashion and every house had that green-orange stuff everywhere in it. I already have the cars from the 60s and early 70s, so I am good there.

Some interesting trivia about Russia beating the US into space is, it was *entirely deliberate* on the part of the US. By allowing Sputnik to orbit the planet, including directly over the North American continent, without making any objection, the US set the international precedent that national borders don't extend all the way into space and forever, and that having an orbital object, such as a satellite with an Earth-facing camera aboard, cross over an enemy's land would be considered perfectly legal, so long as the object is *in orbit.* In effect, Sputnik is a large part of the reason why the USSR lost the cold war.

It’s really easy to do. Just halfway swallow your tongue and vocalize from the back of the mouth instead of the front. All words have upward inflections towards the end, and all “-ay” sounds are incomplete. Just do a soft “aa“ instead. I may know a thing or two, because I’ve heard a thing or two.

According to international flight rules at the time, Yuri Gagarin did not complete his flight. Records later showed that he was forced to bail out of his capsul. This would have been considered a crash, not a completed flight as designed. Alan Shephard, on May 5th, completed the first manned space flight.

Fun fact: the Russian Luna 25 mission last year crashed into the moon as a direct result of US-led sanctions against Russia for the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. They couldn't access western technology for a control unit to replace the one they already had on hand (from before 2022; it was faulty), so they had to build a replacement in house, and well there is a reason Russia isn't exactly known for it's superior technology. Meanwhile, Odysseus is alive and well on the moon. Saved by US taxpayers who contributed to the NASA Doppler Lidar sensors (that weren't supposed to be the main navigation sensors, but they were the only ones that were working).
