What kind of idiot brings an illegal bat to rec lob ball? It’s bad enough that guys are spending +$300 on a legal bat. I’m 51, I play slo-pitch because my rotator cuff won’t allow me to pitch in hardball anymore. I get it. This is just for fun. The biggest gap through the infield is between shortstop and second. Nobody is suggesting to hit the ball AT the pitcher. But he is also right where the big gap is. What balls are you guys hitting? Because if you're hitting USA / ASA balls, there is no advantage in using a USSSA-stamped bat; in fact most ASA bats are hotter because they're designed to hit the softer balls. I understand rules are rules, but calling it "cheating" is a bit harsh. You are absolutely right that (a) getting to re-bat after getting caught using an illegal bat is ridiculous. There's supposed to be a penalty, not a reward. and (b) the umpire should have called that box shot, and since it's a dead-ball call, he could have and should have called it as soon as he realized it, no matter the delay.
