to the mantis shrimp one it’s not uncommon to find them hitch hiking in live rock and live sand I only know this because i used to want a saltwater tank but then i saw how much it would be and how hard it would be and i decided to stick to fresh water and palladiums (I probably spelt it wrong) 😅

Chris, you've changed my view on fish. My betta fish (Zero) he died during a water change. He used to live in an 1gal but I decided to use my money to buy him a 5.5gal. He was thriving with a mystery snail but the snail also died during the water change. Unfortunately, he only lived 9 months. The reason they died was because I used a huge pot to fill the tank up, while they where inside. Both of them died from shock. And now I use a gravel cleaner and siphon instead of pots. I'm looking forward to keep all my bettas in 5gal or more. I rescued a betta not long ago. His name is Snowy and he reflects galaxy colors plus, he's thriving. I was happy saving him. He just layed at the bottom of the bottle when I first got him. I just recently got neon tetra and otocinclus and an african dwarf frog. My new betta is in a quarantine tank while I wait for my 10g-20g tank to come for the new shrimp I'm getting. I'm saving up for plants and substrates because of the self-sustaining effect. Because of you, chris.

I recently started working at the LFS that I frequented for 5 years back in November. I walked in one day and the store owner told me he had been meaning to call me and wanted to know if I wanted a job there. Your channel is actually one that I reference a lot and recommend to beginners who don’t know much but want to learn more. In all of my working life, I have never loved a job more than this one and it brings me so much joy to be able to point people in the right direction when taking care of fish. The most common phrase from you that I say is “if you can pick up your tank and walk away with it, it’s too small.” Thank you Chirs, keep up your good work! ❤️ (Edited to correct chirs’ name)

Garden pond: that's probably real. Mine is a smaller version of that. Yes leaves land on the surface, and eventually soak up and sink, so some floating, some on the bottom. The pond (top view) clearly has some open water. We use stock tank or pond heaters to keep the water from freezing in the winter. I have goldfish and fathead minnows (native to the US east coast) and they're fine with cold water, as long as it's liquid, not solid. I've got elodea, American lotus (late spring through fall), some duckweed and algae.

My favorite thing about fish keeping hobbyists . is how they seem to know both everything about fish and nothing about fish. Like they are able to identify individual breeds of guppies based on subtle differences in tale colors and at the same time can’t identify a dragon fly larvae
@garg4531
8 ай бұрын
I feel that same way too at times It’s something I realized a while back, that a lot of hobbyists tend to “specialize” in a certain field Like there are people who are experts on cichlids yet can’t give sound advise on nano fish, people who know everything about freshwater but next to nothing about saltwater, and vice versa
@FishForThought
8 ай бұрын
LMAO! I've said this a lot actually, how biologist/biology (basically what fish keeping hobbyists aspire to be) are just people who remember certain things. It's not like physics or maths, where you can apply prior knowledge to new things you learn. Sometimes you can I guess, but most of the time nope. If you don't know the name or life-cycle of something, you likely can't figure it out unless you read it and memorize it. It's all about what you already know and what you have yet to learn and memorize.

More New Year's goal than New Year's resolution: attempt breeding some fish for my local fish-keeping community. I live in a pretty rural state and having more variety locally would be amazing for everyone. Right now, I have to drive an hour to my LFS and if they don't have something, I would have to drive 4 hours to the next closest LFS, which would be in another state.

I could be wrong but I have all of these fish in my 30 gallon and the funny photos I take of them look exactly like the ones in the tank at awkward angles.

It's usually a smaller species tho and not something like a peacock, I captured mine and got a small 10L aquarium for it, it wasn't going to be more than 1,5 inches so it was big enough. QOTW: I never make or keep resolutions but I do have vague plans. I bought myself a 32.5 Fluval Flex for myself for Christmas. Over the next few months, I'll be buying all the substrate and plants I need and slowly start building a tiny water jungle. I'm replacing my decades old, horrible, tall, hexagon tank that was popular in the 90's for some strange, unknown reason. Pro-Tip for all you new aquarium keepers: You're still going to see these tanks pop up now and again at yard sales and such. Do not put fish in them, they just plain suck for most fish. Are too tall for most lights to effectively grow anything more than anubias and moss and are just a pain to clean. I think I'll be converting mine to a terrarium for my nepenthes and some other, high humidity plants.
