Side note for Bryce @6:51 : Pen does NOT love her yellow dresses, in fact she actually hates them 😂Those are the Featherington’s house colours so she has to wear them. Even in Episode 1 she told Colin she was happy her mother wasn’t with her at the Vauxhall ball because she got to wear something that was not yellow 😂

Eloise is in a privileged position, she is rich, comes from a sweet family, and she fits the beauty standards of those times. Eloise can afford to wait and never marry, because she will be taken care of, Pen though, doesnt have the luxury of seeing marriage as a choice. So I wish that sometimes Eloise would focus a bit more on Penelope's struggles and help her, instead of judging and ranting all day about marriage.

Y'all need to go watch the 10 Duel Commandments from Hamilton ASAP! (I mean, you really should watch ALL of Hamilton if you haven't seen it), but 10 Duel Commandments does a good job of explaining how dueling worked. Also, a dowry is the money that the woman's family pays to her new husband's family when they get married. It's literally paying the guy to take her on as his wife. The richer the girl's family, the larger the dowry. That's why Lord Featherington had to run off Philippa's suitor, because he's in so much debt he could not pay her dowry were they to get married. He literally can't afford for any of his daughters to get married and needs them to wait until next season when hopefully he will be in a better financial state.
@remplidefeux
Жыл бұрын
Just to piggy-back on this, as I understand it, the dowry was pretty much the woman's side of the wealth brought to the marriage. A man might inherit properties or businesses or whatever that generate income, but a woman didn't possess any of that, so the dowry was her contribution to the marriage. A lot of times it would even be used to like pay for her future daughter's dowries. So like, if a woman literally had NO dowry at all, no one was gonna marry her because she financially brought nothing to the marriage.

Duels had a funny status. Men of the upper classes would feel obligated to challenge someone to a duel if sufficiently offended -- and yet they were officially illegal, and if you killed the other guy you were guilty of murder and would probably want to flee the country. (A "second," as maybe you eventually figured out, was your friend who stood on the sidelines, handing you your weapon at the proper time, and maybe going for medical help afterward, or else helping you get away quickly.) A dowry was a portion of the family fortune (property or money or both) set aside for the marriages of the daughters, to be given to the husband when the ceremony took place, to be added to his own family fortune. Everyone of the upper classes was concerned to maintain their social status, with enough money banked that they could live on the income each year.

If you look at statistics, arround 4% of the adult population is gay (out of those, a bit more than half are bi). So, there is more than a posibility that all 8 of them are straight, or if gay (bi) end up with the opposite sex. I mean, I am all for lgbt visibility, but there is such a thing as pushing the pendulum to the opposite extreemes (from gay characters being "hidden" to being pushed into everything), and whole families being straight is indeed "the norm" (aka the experience of a large majority of the population).

27:44 A dowry's money that's been put aside for a young woman by her family, it's what will come with her when she gets married. Sort of like a trust fund, except that it doesn't mean that she'll get the money when she gets married, it means her husband or her husband's family will get the money. If the young woman isn't considered pretty then a sizeable dowry can be another way of attracting a husband. The point is they'll be hard to find a man who will take any of the Featherington sisters if they don't have a dowry. In any case, that's money he shouldn't have spent.

Mr. Finch in the TV show is really Lord Berbrook in the book. In the book, the Berbrook character acted like Mr. Finch, so the TV show change Berbrook into a creepy old man, when he really wasn't that way in the book. Also, the book makes it clear that Daphne trapped Simon into this wedding by luring him into the garden. The scene where Daphne finds out from Colin where the duel takes place was 10 times better written in the book, because she basically confessed to Colin how much she loves Simon and seeing his sister in tears is what motivated Colin to help Daphne.

A dowry is money or material things given to the groom for the male to agree marry the female. So woe is the family that has many daughters or all daughters. We see this issue in Pride and Prejudice too (please react to the Pride Prejudice starring Kiera Knightley!). Its an archaic practice today and not practiced anymore except in a subset of some cultures. In my culture, its the opposite, the male pay for the women (bride's price) but even this practice is waning.

Hi Guys - A DOWERY was a monetary amount negotiated by the brides and the grooms families. The brides family would pay the grooms family to take their daughter into their family. Women were considered to have only one value , to be BROOD MARES to sell for reproduction and produce heirs. Men have value because they can earn a wage and carry on the families lineage. So Featherington gambling away his daughters dowries means they cannot marry unless they find someone to marry who does not demand a dowery. He has cursed his ENTIER family to ruin because now they are broke with no prospects of marriage.
