While waiting for our room to get ready at hotel Il Padrino, we went for a walk to Iglesia de la Merced. This is the famous church in Granada where you can climb the bell tower and enjoy great views of the city in all directions. Tourists used to be allowed to ring the bells about a decade ago but that's no longer the case. Just make sure not to lean on the railing at the top ... Climbing the bell tower will set you back only 1 USD per person.
After la Merced, you can continue your walk past Xalteva Park and eventually you will end up at the colonial fortification called La Polvora. This is a Spanish military fortress from the 18th century. Rio San Juan is completely navigable: English pirates would often enter it from the Caribbean sea, sail all the way up to Lake Nicaragua and raid Granada. As the fortress of El Castillo is located on Rio San Juan in a tropical and humid jungle, the Spaniards couldn't store gunpowder there. Therefore a decision was made to build La Polvora on a hill above Granada, overlooking the lake where invading ships can easily be spotted.
