In the middle of June, the largest environmental action took place in Ithaca by the Dutch organization Healthy Seas, which is active in cleaning the seas.
An abandoned fish farm (which had gone bankrupt) had been an environmental disaster for Ithaca since 2012. In one week, a team of 45 people (mostly volunteers), including 20 divers, cleaned up 76 tons of rubbishes from the sea and 4 beaches in southwest of Ithaca. The bankrupt company since 2012, left behind fish farming cages and other equipment that polluted the area endangering the local community, marine life and marine traffic.
As if this was not enough in September 2020, cyclone Ianos was the cause of scattering tons of industrial materials from plastic pipes, fishing nets, nylon ropes, concrete blocks, plastic buoys, large rusty pieces of scrap metal and various other pieces of metal. on the sea surface, the seabed and the shores.
Apart from the volunteer divers of the Ghost Diving organization who worked to remove the fish cages, pipes and fishing nets, there was a group of Greek volunteers who undertook to clean the beaches by removing with the help of a crane made of metal.
To document the whole project, we started from Athens with a Hyundai Tucson and visited Ithaca twice. The first time on the day the cleaning started and ten days later to see the final results that were impressive, as you will see in our video.
We spoke with the head of education of Healthy Seas Konstantina Kostoula who analyzed our huge problem but also with the Mayor of Ithaca Dionysis Stanitsa, who showed us the importance of the project.
The cleaning of 4 beaches of Ithaca in numbers
- 76 total tons of waste
- 5 tons of nets

- 39 tons of plastics,
