Yeah, thought the same also. It just depends on how it was listed. Unfortunately I’ve seen too many fast listings out there where the description just says “item for sale” nothing else. Not saying Nic has done that. But you also get the window licker types, who just see the item for sale and click buy without reading the listing. Seen too many of them types…🤔🙄

I sold a home cinema amplifier on eBay 15+ years ago. Perfect working order, no marks on it as i bought it new (For £1,000) it sat on a dedicated stand, and I used the remote to turn it off/on/volume and use other settings. Anyhow it sold for £220 six months after i bought it, + around £20 in postage fees (recorded delivery) as it weighed 25 kilo and posted it in its original box and polystyrene. Anyhow a few days later I had a reply saying the remote didn't work and it had a scratch along the top of it. The pictures of the scratch in the reply was more of a gouge. This wasn't how It was and how i sent it. I cant remember the in's and outs of it all but it went to and fro for weeks. It ended up me paying them back and me without the amplifier. It burned my whole experience with eBay and have never used it since. I have stuff I would love to list on ebay now, but I always have flashbacks of people scamming me so haven't bothered listing anything from that day. I do buy off eBay tho.

Sadly there are chancers who will make a complaint hoping that the seller will simply refund in order to avoid the hassle. Usually, once the dodgy buyers realise they're not dealing with a new or inexperienced seller, they'll go quiet and try it on with someone else. Luckily, you will have their address and I'm sure your dog produces a fine array of turds that will go as a large letter if required.

Nic. Might well be genuine. We had a vaporetti steam iron and sometimes if not used for a while it would loosen up limescale and throw out that sort of gunge on the next use. When you tested it it might have loosened off the limescale. When they turned it on they got what you saw. Who knows?
@jackskinner6457

Sounds like they were trying to pull a fast one...However this could possibly be limescale? I have owned a steam cleaner for a number of years that had a built in non removable tank. Always worked fine. I then dropped it and the same looking substance came out when I next used it. Turned out there was a thick layer of limescale at the bottom of the tank that dislodged after I dropped it.
@dinacox1971

My thought too. Perhaps in the jostle of the shipping and after Nick had used the machine that had been sitting for a long time the built-up became dislodged. Regardly I think Nick handled the situation professionally and properly by simply asking for the return. I don't know if he has free returns, if not that may have explained the buyer's "no further action".

I got scammed back in December, I sold a brand new and sealed action camera. 29 days after it was delivered I get a return request. Saying item faulty, covered in sticky residue and battery doesn't hold charge. They even sent photos of sticky residue on camera. I thought OK strange but said open return case. They did, I received camera back, covered in dried cola no mistaking that smell it was even inside battery compartment. Spoke to Ebay but no joy even though my item was brand new and sealed and the only way it got damaged was with misuse. But ebay found in favour and refunded the buyer, which I wasn't happy doing. I'm now down £80 and an action camera. Not happy ebay needs to do something to help thing be found in favour of the seller in instances like this.

I think if anything there should be a threshold where eBay favour sellers with so much positive feedback, over a buyer with a new account or one with very little feedback. If eBay are favouring buyers scamming sellers who have like 500+ feedback at 100% positive, there's an issue with the whole system.

Happy New Year! Yeah the first one sounds like an attempt for a partial refund for sure. Second one, I reckon they thought the paint pod was the whole system, complained, realised their mistake and rather than admit it, just ran away. I had someone make a very lowball offer on a Gremlin toy once, I counter offered and she lowballed again. In hindsight I should have left it, but I counter offered again (£12) and she accepted. Sent the toy and a few days she's claiming a cigarette burn on it - I don't smoke and her photo showed the same part of the toy in the original listing but now with a small hole! She was looking for a partial refund which I should have refused but I thought the easy way was to offer her £2 off, even though I knew she'd damaged it herself, or return for a full refund. She accepted the £2 partial refund then on receipt immediately gave me my first negative feedback ever, saying the partial refund (which she agreed to) wasn't generous enough. Clearly she'd just spent more than she wanted and was prepared to scam her money back.Thankfully I'd not given her her compulsary positive feedback yet so gave her one saying she was either a scammer or a moron. She actually changed her negative to a neutral eventually because of that, but my comment remains!

Any simple google search will inform you these white calcium deposits are limescale bits that form on the heating unit, and a very common issue . Further, if you do an image search for the filters on this machine, you will see that very same white "grit" as in buyers pictures in the google Vaporetto Polti filters pictures . You inform that you "tested the unit" and it "worked perfectly" , with all due respect, save you testing it for an hour on your own carpet it probably wasn't enough to heat the unit long enough to release the embedded limescale from the Heating element . The cleaner works like a kettle boiling water and are prone to lime scale build up. The customer when cleaning their carpet would have probably used it for a lot longer and then that's when the limescale came off the element and through the unit head. It would appear to me the most likely explanation is that the person whom you bought this item from had hard water or left water sitting in the tank for a while before emptying it and selling it to you, What's more, probably the customer had enough intelligence to google the issue and then ran some cleaner or vinegar though the unit that made it work "perfectly" and so kept it, hence why he went quite. Save all of the above, Why on earth would a buyer go to the trouble and hassle of setting up an elaborate conspiracy story and pictures involving white grit the likes of would make Arthur Conran Doyle stop and draw breath; when they could have just said it arrived not working period! To conclude, I think most normal minded individuals would be of the opinion that it's a probably not a wise strategy to openly defame your own customers on KZitem?

Steam Cleaners can have a mineral deposit build up due to limescale and other things in the tap water. This may not have happened when you tested it Nic because if it was dormant for a while when you tested it it will have basically softened this build up in the machine somewhere. So when the customer then fired it up for a second time these deposits came loose and it probably only needed to have bottled filtered water ran through the unit! Have you ever had chalky residue come off your iron before etc? Well its this but on a bigger scale with a steamer! Its quite possible the buyer was being honest with you and the pictures show this residue that has came away!

Hi Nic thanks for sharing. I’ve had 2 messages after Christmas from overseas purchases in December asking where their items are - I politely said please wait 30 days for shipping, added the tracking numbers and sent them a link to the eBay buyer protection policy. I’m in Australia and had a disappointed return customer. In December I packaged their 2 purchases together and gave them a $10 refund on postage. Just last week they messaged and said where’s the X. Package would’ve been 2kg heavier and packed on top not hard to miss. I politely reminded them of the refund I sent and that the 2 items were together. I should have sent the details of the total weight but reminded them of eBay buyer protection for non deliveries. I haven’t heard anything back. They’re now blocked even if a repeat buyer too bad. How dare some people try it on it sours all the great sales like you said. Thanks for talking about this it’s does take some experience not to just send a refund. All the best.

All of my used jigsaws are completed, photographed and immediately sealed in bags before listing - my wife helps me with this so we have two pairs of eyes to ensure that no pieces go astray. I think the first guy was a try on for sure, he actually said he couldn't return it as he was disabled and implied he was going to leave negative feedback. He didn't. Hi Nic, Don't think the steamer is necessarily a scam. It looks like the limescale build up I have had in my Polti through not descaling, hence the grit look and white liquid. It would not be visible when simply using the ordinary steam wand as the nozzle for that is too small to allow it through, however if you use the carpet cleaning nozzle it will come out on the carpet if heavily scaled inside. This often happens if the steamer has not been used for a while.There is often a small window on the side, and when you add your mix of water/distilled water to the tank, you will see it has turned a milky white and may also hear the grit rolling about. To get rid of the scale, the same as a kettle it needs repeated rinsing and throwing the water away, then use the descaling liquid tubes.The grit will then pour out of the top. If they get too scaled up they stop working and need throwing. They usually keep their good looks for years, and often look like new. If your buyer has realised thats what it is, he may simply have done that and solved the problem. If you should come across another, give it a good shake for grit before you buy! It may of course still be a scam and the limescale is from their kettle 😀Love watching you and Andrea and keep up keeping us informed, thank you.

Sold a Cd/radio player. Apparently, they could not get a signal. Asked them to open a return case, but never heard from them again.

I think the time of year encourages people to try it hoping you’re so busy and stressed you will just take the easy option of offering partial refunds rather than having stuff returned. I had one just before Xmas on an amplifier he claimed didn’t work properly powered on but just went into protect mode (worked fine before dispatch) and upon telling him I would refund when returned he suddenly managed to get it working by looking the problem up online 🤦♀

Here is what I do, I tend to take photos of the item as it is being handed to the post-office including of the weight of the package (if its a bigger package). That move exposed many scammers who tried their luck and were not aware those photos were taken. Once I indicated I have those photos the scammers were gone. This might help deal with some of the scams ( those are getting to be more creative by the day )

This sounds like stories I have heard of people buying various power tools from big DIY stores then doing the job they require it for, then return it saying it's faulty.

I’m glad you got scammed. I can remember you purchasing sellotape from Poundland for 50p a roll a few years back. You then went on to sell it at £5 a roll. So who’s the scammer or should it be ripoff merchant !!

Every now and again you come across thieves, it’s an occupational hazard of dealing with the public. Most are decent and fair people but some are scum.

I had one buyer who claimed that the item never arrived. They opened a case for a refund and I replied that I had posted it and then left it at that, not giving a refund at that time. Ebay witheld the money on my account but after a month, they still had not closed or answered the case so ebay closed it in my favour. They so obviously wanted the item and a refund. Not happening. You did good with these cases Nic.

I recently purchased a "new - never been used" CPU from a brand new ebay seller. Had to raise as "item not received" within ebay before they finally sent the item (more than a week later). They then sent a clearly used, dirty CPU in a thin bubble wrap bag only - no anti-static bag or any other packaging/protection. I requested a return and full refund as the item was not "new - never been used" - then got the silent treatment and had to raise a dispute with ebay. Seller asked me to send the item back, I said "ok - please provide a returns label" - had to teach the seller how ebay works until they finally sent a returns label which I used to return the item. Seller then said could not refund, so I had to contact ebay again to finally receive the refund. This is the last time I am ever going to purchase anything from a new ebay seller!

I just have to say that I had a problem with a new reseller and it was laughable.He didn’t believe item hadn’t arrived and told me I was scamming him. It was only ten quid. Finally it turned up underpaid as he’d sent as large letter when it was a small parcel. I ended up teaching him that he’s not best served by calling the buyer a liar. ps. The item was a bra but it wasn’t an uplifting experience dealing with the new seller. It was a lovely bra in the end though.

Unless you're entirely sure of the cleaner's tank, what may have happened is the shipping process dislodged some limescale within the system somewhere due to being moved and banged about a bit and when they filled it up and used it, that white liquid is the limescale. Of course, even if that is Limescale, could always just be someone who owns one trying to do a swap scam.

The first negative feedback i got in 20odd years was from a Jehovahs Witness who purchased a JW publication (possibly a New World Translation). I described it as having writing, comments and underlinings in it. Straight negative with no chance to refund etc. He didnt like the comments in it that would have challenged his beliefs. what was the % feedback of your customers alleged scammers?

There are definitely some chancers out there. I was asked to resend £20 worth of chocolate because the buyer had missed the collection point pickup deadline. I asked them to contact the pick-up point (Argos) anyway, but they refused and asked me to resend. I politely declined. I haven’t heard anything since.

Hi we gave been selling on eBay for 20 years Top Tip. We have a dash cam mounted over our packing bench. It records all items packed with a date / time stamp.this has saved us a few items. Really helps with item not as described case. eBay need to do more to protect sellers

I suspect limescale had become dislodged inside the steamer in transit and this was the white sludge. After a thorough rinse and maybe a run using vinegar or a proprietary limescale remover and it would be fine. Wanting to avoid the hassle of returning it hopefully the buyer has discovered this solution.

Except Ebay doesnt help ...their policies have NO balance. Sellers pay the fees, buyers do not. Legitimate buyers / sellers get scammed or money frozen, whilst illegitimate buyers/ sellers get a red carpet, champagne and wellness shots, because Fleabay is only interested in the injection of cash they get. They dont care about YOU or your business.

Hi Nic, I sold a "new" old stock Kenwood chef mini mixer, original box, items inside inoriginal packaging etc. I took pics of the lid and view from opening ex box. Few days later I received negative feedback. Saying the item was in a shocking,filthy condition. I have sold o er 800 items and up to then had 100% positive feedback. I messaged the buyer and asked for photos, no reply. 4 hours later I received a message saying " item not arrived," tracking said it had been delivered.i messaged again to say that I found it odd to be told it hadn't arrived when 4 hrs earlier you gave bad feedback about the condition. Buyer messaged back saying initial feedback wasn't for the one I'd sent but they had ordered 2. Who buys 2 Kenwood mini mixers? I contacted ebay who investigated, removed the negative feedback and closed the case Like you say, it isn't very often that this happens ug is annoying when it does. Keep up the good work. Love the channel. Tha ks

So on both occasions you automatically assume the person is a scammer, who knows. What if in the first example they put some liquid in the device and not realized it was wrong liquid and then read the book and it hit them they was in the wrong maybe, what was there feedback score? Second example my first thought was what if they expected paint in it or something and they realized after it didnt come with paint, who knows. Yes there is scammers but there is also people who dont understand what they are buying. Ive brought and sold on ebay since 2003 so I seen it all also

I had two over Christmas as well - one for an Xbox game they had for a week which apparently froze every 15 minutes, and one for a camera that just plain “didn’t work” even though I’d tested it thoroughly. Returns offered on both items, even tried to ask the person with the camera what the issue was to help them and no reply from either buyer. Both small ticket items under a tenner and both buyers with less than 10 feedback. It’s just plain fishing - never give refunds and let the buyer keep the item and never do partial refunds people.
