Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and Labour leader, Keir Starmer, don’t like to mention the word Brexit.
They will skip and skirt around the word, as if it is something very naughty, best not to be referred to in polite company, or rather in front of voters.
And when they do refer to it, it’s only to confirm belief in it (Sunak) or that the debate about it is over (Starmer) - but anyway, Labour will make it work.
Not mentioning Brexit is a chronic condition now of both the Tories and Labour. It was certainly the invisible elephant in last night’s leaders’ debate.
As an article by Hugo Rifkind in The Times last year was headlined, ‘Sunak and Starmer can barely say the B-word’.
He wrote, ‘Even now, with no benefits of Brexit visible, neither leader will bring himself to acknowledge the elephant in the room.’
Even some pro-EU groups and campaigners claim that we should not mention the 'Brexit' word as it is ‘divisive’.
It's an argument I've heard for 8 years, ever since the referendum result.
But in my view, it's a failed policy. It has not helped us.
If we don't mention 'Brexit', we allow Brexiters to keep mentioning it, and to continue to lie about bogus Brexit benefits, without any effective challenge.
We must tackle the Brexit lies head-on, because if we don't, we let them become so entrenched that they are then increasingly difficult to shift as the years go by.
By not mentioning Brexit, our side lets the other side control the agenda and the message. That’s not the way to win.
After all, we don’t just want our country back. We want our continent back.
We want to ‘take back control’ that we lost after the referendum, that we now know was fuelled and funded by Putin’s Russia.

To challenge Brexit, we must mention Brexit - not just once, but every day, until the message really gets through.
Brexit is a sham, a fraud, and a despicable lie, that offers Britain no benefits, only devastating disadvantages.
You can’t say that without mentioning Brexit.
