I think a sawzall with a 10 inch blade with a Bena potentially better idea. I've done a few like that with my STIHL edger and weed eater, watching you do it gave me the idea of the Sawzall. I think some people call them reciprocating saws I'm not sure. But hey good job!

@@timthelawnmowerman I never tried it either, never thought of it before watching you do it with that Beast you had. And it popped in my head! You might not want to use a 10 inch blade and yet maybe that'd be perfect just running the blade Along cement curb, i would use a wood blade with big teeth you're just cutting grass and dirt. No more slinging and dirt all over you and fighting that bull. Just cut and peel it off with you shovel! I can't accept the genius of the idea you see I have a secret friend called the Holy Spirit, if he leaves me by myself I'll mess things up! God bless you and yours!

Next time you run into over grown curb grass take a spade shovel and run it under the over grown grass to loosen the dirt and grass from the curb first then use your edger you will find by doing this little extra work that the clean up will take the same amount of time but get done much easier. I spent about 6 year doing lawn care in a professional manner. This was what I found to be the best way.

That atom lawn edger is probably the best designed edger I've seen. That one wheel makes it perfect for the grass that over grows on the gutter edge of the foot path, where the two wheeled edger fails to work. I want one!
@chasermalloy7406
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the single wheel makes it great when the kerb and the grass are at different height. Go for the 2 stroke. Mine is the old Ryobi engined one. They are used at full revs as instructed and have more muscle than the 4 strokes for cutting through thick overgrown stuff like this. I had probably eight or nine hundred feet of overgrown edges to do. This old second hand atom did it with ease. I could not have managed it any other way in less than a week full time even if I was much fitter.
@alexo9538

Can’t agree with you there. The narrow space between the guard and the blade causes constant collecting of all the debris and you can see this guy is also having to unclog it multiple times. Poor design. Half assed job from the designers of the edger if you ask me.

So...speaking as the weed whacker/edger pro of our mom&pop lawn care business, I have to say that Aton edger looks like a real beast of a tool! You left a nice job after you finished...but-I would have to agree with your previous commenter who said you should have gone over it start to finish before you did all that pulling of soda and sweeping, etc. They were right...it's counter-productive for time's sake, but maybe you did it for camera angles and shots? At any rate, good job!

Big tip for edges like this after a rain; Press the edges down as much as possible and make them compact, it forces excess moisture out and "flattens" the soil more over the edge. Then go back over it with the trimmer first to expose the edge; Proceed to edge it. Should make it a lot easier for you if you get thick edges like this in the future.

I think the patent is still in force for these Atom edgers and that's why you don't see others making them. I will say that the 2 stroke ones have much more power. Mine is an old ryobi engined 2 stroke and still works great. They are meant to be used at full throttle in either case. This seems to be revving pretty slow. Still shows what a good job they do of course. Two wheeled vertical blade trimmers are a pain to use on kerbs where the level of the grass and kerb are different like this. These are the business and are available pretty much world wide.

Great video! I love edging and trimming the most. However, that broom you were using was completely wrong for this job. It's too wide for sweeping curb tops, and too soft to push the trimmings into a pile (use a wide stiff push broom to make piles) effectively. You need a broom with stiff bristles about 6 - 8 inches wide, and no longer than 6 - 8 inches long. The ones I've used usually have thick white bristles. Hope this helps and makes your work a little easier!

Nice video. Did you ever find out why the stringer line keeps cutting out or winding back into the spool? I’m having the same issues. Only happens when I edge using the trimmer and I always have to open the spool and remove the line and rewind. I have the speed feed head mind you but it’s so annoying I have to stop and disassemble the head and rewind again. I have no idea what the issue is. Doesn’t do this when I use the trimmer with the head in the horizontal position. Always happens when I edge in the vertical position.

Once I have wound on a new length of line on the spool I spray a squirt of WD40 around it just using the little extension pipe. Doesn't need much and easily runs through and covers all the line in the spool. I find it makes line release easier and stops the line sometimes welding together inside the spool when it gets snagged around a pole or such.

- Gas lawn edgers more suitable for larger jobs to deal with tougher grass and matted roots. - Electric units feature less power, but are lighter and more compact which contributes to their portability and maneuverability even in the tightest spaces. Lawn edgers come in three different designs including pole, string, and walk-behind options. Pole and string types most common handheld lawn edgers and highly demanded being compact and portable. - Generally, designated for residential jobs on smaller spaces. are capable of handling uneven surfaces and rough grounds. Usually equipped with 3 wheels, 1 at the front and 2 of them on the rear side. - Grant ultimate control during edging process and exceptional maneuverability even in the tightest spots. - Pole edgers come as 2-in-1 tools with ability of converting from lawn edger to trencher, to dig clean trenches around flower beds, trees and curbs. - Strings wear faster when used for edging sidewalks and walkways. - Have to be replaced more frequently. - String edger best option for yards with irregular terrain with multiple shrubs, small trees and tight spaces. - Comparison with other edgers, it's a bit difficult to control due to lack of any supporting structure (wheels, deck, etc). - String edgers do not prevent grass cuttings from flying around. - Highly recommended to use protective gears like goggles and gloves when operating a string edger/trimmer. Walk-behind lawn edgers are most powerful machines and can also operate as lawn mowers. - Supported by wheels (usually 4 wheels), commonly equipped with gas engines to trim lawns on vast territories. - 4th wheel of unit designated for greater stability of edger when used around the curbs or walkways. - Walk-behind edgers are widely used for commercial and some professional-grade purposes. - They are heavier and more bulky than the handheld counterparts - Can't handle grass in some narrow corners, or under any short-growing plants in small residential gardens. - Walk-behind models are quite pricey. Blade type. Different lawn edgers feature different types of blades depending on particular needs. - Some models offered with kit of blades of different sizes and shapes. - Blade design determines specifics of each lawn edging application, so need to know right options suitable for your purposes. Flat and star-shaped blades the most common options on the market. most regular items suitable for several lawn maintenance tasks like basic edging and trenching. are capable of aggressive cutting of tough grass, stern weeds and roots. - Why frequently used for professional-grade applications. - Do their best when used on uneven surfaces. cutting attachment of a lawn edger. - Frequently used on gas-powered models...allows tackling the most challenging gardening projects. - Can safely cut grass that ends on hard surfaces like curbs. - Only with this blade type the crisp edging finish may be attained in one pass. Cutting depth. - Can vary this and set a particular cutting blade depth depending on application and the area of your garden. - Very important as in some cases the excessive penetration of a blade into the ground may lead to root cutting. Consequently, the grass in this area of your lawn will be damaged or killed. - To avoid this, adjust the cutting depth. - Majority of modern lawn edgers feature from 1-inch up to 2 ½-inch cutting depths. This range covers most cutting needs. - Varied depending on a type of lawn edger in terms of power source. makes from 3.5 to 4.5 HP with the adequate torque to not get dull or bog down during the work. nevertheless corded models come with 10 Amp - 12 Amp motors to tackle majority of garden needs on average residential yard. Similarly to corded models, battery-powered lawn edgers with 18V-24V li-ion batteries have enough capacity to cover large areas with no mishaps. Weight issue to think over when buying a lawn edger, especially if you have a large outdoor territory. - Heavier models are more powerful and durable, but more bulky with minimum maneuverability and more effort in handling. With large landscaping projects, better to purchase a powerful walk-behind model. Small gardening jobs can be easily performed with the help of lightweight and compact handheld lawn edgers.

Hi tim you should have invested on masport lawn egader it comes with 80 cc engine where the amto comes with a 25cc the masport has adjustable cutter and 4 wheels making it easy to push it is available from mitre 10 for $499 or you can get the 127cc for $620 both have good reliable engines briggs and stratton. all the best jim the plumber queanbeyan nsw .PS why did you leave the green bin in the middle of the road could have caused a accident you could have been sued.

I’d need another user to carry that thing mate. As far as the bin goes, I like living on the edge.

The 4 wheel models are a pain to use when the grass and concrete are on different levels. That's what's good about the Atom. Two stroke ones have much more power and will cut through the thickest overgrowth like this in one pass. My Atom are probably 15 years ago and still work great.

Straight man, right mindset ! No lawnguy but running a business on my own and im good at optimizing workflows, so my tips to save time and money: 1. Do straight lines with one tool all the way, change to the next tool and use it also the whole line, then clean up the whole line. The way you work , your loosing the time for a regular job, every 4 or 5 jobs like this. 2. Use a shovel to get the grasssoil of, not a rake. The shovel gets under the soil and lifts it up. 3. You own pretty much small but expensive stuff, better invest in atleast a selv driving mover. You dont need a 0turn or traktor. But the power you save not to have to push your mover, is saved for your next job. If you sell your old and buy a used selfdriver, the difference in money isnt so big.

It just feels like less work to me when they are a little longer. I think time wise it works out about the same but It feels easier on me so I’ve been running with it on anything with even a bit of length. Either that or I’ll chuck the mulch plug in the honda and run over it with that first. Works for me anyway 🤷♂️ Thanks for watching!
