14:16 So he is saying the V16 sounds like the MkII except for the bass difference? Why are other people saying the V16 has way more 3D sound and soundstage and way more resolution? 12:33 what is that "masking quality"? If lowering the EQ did not have an effect on mids/treble details, then is something wrong with the IEM itself? Is that acceptable?

Resolve here - Probably because it costs more? Price and confirmation bias are significant influencers. Re the masking thing, it's mainly an example of some important difference in the sound quality that's not immediately available or recognizable in FR. Bass level is something that's identifiable in FR, and can 'mask' the details at times, but I don't think it's what explains it in this case.

It just occurred to me that the reason everyone should use EQ is because everyone's ear canals are different. EQ is necessary to correct for ear canal differences and is essential if you want any hope of reproducing what the mastering engineer intended. Also IEM fits are all the different with different types of tips and different size tips and different insertion depths. Customising the bass to adjust for your particular fitment and is essential if you want any hope of reproducing what the mastering engineer intended. And so while you're doing EQ anyway why not improve on what the mastering engineer did with it. It might have sounded great on the studio monitors he/she was using but most IEM don't sound exactly the same as those studio monitors. Most headphones don't sound the same either.

I use EQ all the time with IEMs, because actually I think most IEMs respond much better to EQ than full size headphones. You only have to worry about eartip seal and your unique ear canal resonances, while with open back full size there are too many factors at play like ear cup resonances and outer ear pinna interactions. With IEMs, you can create a very natural and balanced frequency response just by using sine sweeps and correcting for the peaks and dips you personally hear. It’s interesting that with most IEMs I have tried, I get a fairly large peak/resonance at 6.5-7kHz, and when I equalize that out it sounds much more natural.

I just like to use measurements to get somewhere in the ballpark of neutral (what I prefer) and then go off what sounds best to me. I use Resolves EQ for my LCD-X but I don't EQ my Oracles. I prefer not to use EQ if possible

@@kyron42 I think this is among the best ways to customize FR to your own ears. I'm just too lazy to build my own EQ from a sine sweep so I defer to someone else's correction as a starting point lol

Thanks for the video! Sorry if I have been spamming this. But I find the V16 resolving enough that it gains synnergy depending on source. I swear mine gets a step more imaging detail & intensity with my dx300 amp11mki & the Samsung dac dongle. My dx300max, ak240 gives it less so of these qualities. My old Sony ZX2 dap is a middle-ground between the dx300amp11mki & the dx300max. Also it helps to listen to it at lower volumes being a V shaped fun iem. It feels more compressed at higher volumes since its bass and ear gain are already a little ahead.

May be it is a result of music choices, but I don't find any sibilance issue with my Timeless. I use it 4.4mm balanced with the Cayin RU6 Dac connected to Oneplus7pro smartphone. It can be a matter of different subjective preferences as well. Ya, bass of the Timeless is planar magnetic in its character (what some describe as 'soft attack') but still it is quite punchy and very well textured and detailed in my experience. As for the general planar magnetic timbre, I have no issue with that as I am used to the planar magnetic Hifiman Sundara. As you yourself said, there is the uniqueness factor going for the Timeless as well.
