Feeling foolish that this mod review was what finally tipped me into playing Thief. Huge fan of Deus Ex, System Shock, Dishonored, Prey, Bioshock etc. but always felt like Thief was just a bit too antiquated. This mod convinced me to pop in and give it a try, and made me realize that not only is Thief not a simple, feature lacking version of modern immersive sims, but that modern releases hardly even imitate its quality and vision.

10:17 You're not wrong. My favorite realization when going through the 2nd level is that it's the same manor where the Constantine hiring Garrett cutscene takes place in the first game. In the sitting room on the second floor, you can find that weird clock on the fireplace and the hanging man window above it (seen in 9:20). Also, in a hidden cellar behind the bar, you can find the plant wine that Constantine offers Garret as well. While references aren't what make something great, the way Black Parade put this one in without any fanfare made it so cool to discover.

So glad this channel promoted this mod! This video prompted a huge deep dive for me - I ended up playing through all three original games, plenty of FMs, including Thief 2X, Death's Cold Embrace, Seven SIsters, the Rocksbourg trilogy and Godbreaker, all in preparation for The Black Parade. Having gone through all of that, I genuinely would recommend people at least play the first two games all the way through _before_ playing TBP. This campaign is an absolute, genuine masterpiece of Thief level design and atmosphere, with all the intricacies you could ever hope for in this gameplay style present, mastered and sharpened to the highest degree. As a result of all this indulgent excellence, however, I think any fresh-faced newcomer would be utterly overwhelmed, confused and frustrated by the sheer scale and complexity of it all. That said, anyone even _remotely_ interested should absolutely check it out, just be aware that due diligence really is a requirement.

The Thief fan mission community has one of the absolute highest standards of any modding/fan mission community out there. It's absolutely crazy what some of them put out. I love Thief 1 and 2 so much and I love the mission design in those games, but the modders have improved SO MUCH on what Looking Glass put out over 2 decades ago. It's genuinely incredible. It reminds me a lot of the people behind Tamriel Rebuilt are doing. They're building on the foundations laid by the original developers, but have refined the art so, so much. And this is all on top of the extreme fragility of the engine and the miserable experience that is using DromEd. (And thank god for NewDark as well!)
@ledumpsterfire6474

Think the series being dead is a lot of why, ironically enough. If you ever want to play polished new content, you'd better work your sleeves up and start figuring out how to make it, because you never will otherwise. Warcraft 3 modders are in a similar situation since, like Thief, it's an entirely dead series (we don't acknowledge Reforged just the same as not acknowledging the Thief reboot), and many of its mods are also near developer quality. I'd say another factor is just how friendly the devs are to modding though. The other commonality between these two very different games is that they were practically built from the ground up with facilitating fanmade content in mind.

How there’s a high level of detail while still following the fidelity of the 90s and early 2000s eras of 1st-person PC gaming has my jaw dropped and my wig flying out the window. I don’t own any high-graphical-fidelity games that have released after 2016 due to aging hardware, so when amazing “old guard” communities for my favorite games: Thief, Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines, Rome Total War 2005, and Daggerfall Unity are still working on and publish content, I get so, SO overjoyed!!!

THIS is the stuff I absolutely ADORE about the communities of old games. Seeing massive passion projects that take full advantage of modern hardware to make absolutely BONKERS stuff for games without changing their core identities or looks blow me away every time. If you're into Quake any and haven't already, I super recommend looking into Quake: Arcane Dimensions. It doesn't have a story like this project does but its some of THE BEST tweaks and Quake levels I've ever played. Particularly the map: Tears of the false god. Stuff like this is what makes me love games like DUSK and Amid Evil that capture these feels with all modern tech, and again projects like QAD and Black Parade that take a game and revamp it with hardware that couldn't even be dreamed of when they came out. Its so fuckin' cool.

I learned to actually pick locks off the internet, and would constantly break into locked rooms for fun. (I didn't steal anything, unless you count popsicles.) I damn near got caught a few times, but the games trained me well, and I avoided getting in serious trouble by ducking into a dark corner or side room and keeping absolutely silent, once for 15 minutes. Even then you won't be able to fully appreciate the mod, because it references other FMs as often as it does the official games. Its such a delight to see how some levels in TBP are in conversation with other older FMs. For years people have been wanting a 4th Rocksbourg FM, and I would say Mission 6 (Kept Away From View ) is exactly that. Mission 8 (Jaws of Darkness) is a continuation of Into the Odd's design philosophy (itself inspired by sperry's classic Shadow of a Doubt campaign). And peppered throughout all missions in the readables there are so many nods and other references to older FMs. I would say the best parts of TBP's story and world building is exactly in these readables, and not in the way it connects to the official games.

@@UnKnownv5 is this a genuine question or are you just trying to provoke a reaction? If genuine: A small team of highly talented fans spent 7 years making an unofficial "sequel" to a long dead series (Thief), in a genre that is rarely explored in modern games. The end result is a game that not only faithfully follows the official games in lore and canon, but also perfectly recreates the experience and elevates it with a lot of polish and refinement that even the official games lacked, all the while offering an entirely new campaign and missions to play, with new locations, characters, abilities, enemies etc. It''s like discovering your favorite game series from years ago, long abandoned by any major publisher or developer, is suddenly back and better then ever. There's a lot of nostalgia behind this but its not just that. The Thief games are foundational. So many modern games benefit from the groundwork laid by this series. But at the same time not one other game does it like Thief. Even other major stealth games don't give the same experience. Some indie games are doing a fine job emulating aspects of it, but they have their own identity and feel very different as a result. Thief is unique and unmatched. Even its "modern" (2014) reboot failed to capture what made the original series special. So this "mod" is a miracle. A full game, completely for free (if you have the original thief games) and a dream come through for many.

@@UnKnownv5 "Follower" of _what_ or _whom?_ Do tell, I'm sure you have a _brilliant_ answer ready. So you *are* just a contrarian. Good job. I'm sure people will take your bitter tantrums about them enjoying things very seriously, you insecure little twat you. 😏

@@UnKnownv5 ok: Wow this mod has an amazing amount of depth and story telling, sound design, and interesting level design given the limitations of the engine.

@@UnKnownv5 sounds like you know a lot of good mods for Thief. Do you have any recommendations? Especially interested in ones better than this.

Thanks to the title, I am now imagining a full cover of Welcome to the Black Parade in its entirety. Instead of Gerard Way for everything, the role of the cancer patient is played by Mandalore. Sseth is, of course, Death.

Welp, didn't know this was even a thing, I know how my next few days are being used. Thank you Mandy for once again shining light on things I'd never notice.

Always great to see your passion for a game series come out with videos like this that are just start to finish fan gushing while still remaining objective and analytical. Ever thought of trying out Fear and Hunger 1 and 2? They're especially bizzare and unsettling in the ways I feel like you'd enjoy.

When all hope was lost in the gaming world, Mandalore came out with a beacon of hope. A thief mod! And behold it was good

You have to try Blood West, trust me, you'll love it. Cool immersive sim with undead cowboy voiced by Stephen Russel and cursed places with even more cursed enemies.

On the one hand, this video is only ten minutes. On the other hand, it's a good review and it's enough to give me my Mandy fix while I wait for the next big review. Nice.

Yeah, I've been enjoying a lot of The Dark Mod meself recently and keep being amazed at how it's all free. You get amazing content, pay nothing. _And then there's the modern gaming industry who want you to pay amazing and get nothing._

Regarding the first credits question: As someone who made the mistake of buying Rogue Trader at launch, do not repeat my mistake. To anyone reading this, DO NOT BUY THIS GAME for at least another few months. I always figured the talk of bugs at Owlcat launches were stuff like graphical glitches, you know, things that are more funny than harmful. But this has been eye opening. Quests that fail to trigger, area exits not appearing and leaving you trapped, forced to reload an earlier save, horribly imbalanced encounters at some points, both ones that are too easy and too hard. It's a mess. I'm never making this error again.

Speaking of these kinds of mods, maybe you should check out the Doom total conversion mod Ashes 2063. It is a really great one.

Ashes is good, but in the Doom world megawads that stick closer to the established Doom formula are way more interesting, like Ancient Aliens.
