Henry's question is dumb. The US has more players in the top leagues in Europe, and even the top teams, than have been there in the past. While the MLS has improved, it's still far behind those leagues; so it's no surprise fewer MLS players can make the USMNT than made it in the past. It's not a knock on the MLS, but a sign of player improvement in the US.

@@Ilfenomeno-sp2hk you're making yourself look dumb when you're bringing up pulisic and mckennie when there are tons of better players. the comment was about americans having a better pool of players compared to before, which is completely true. comparing a 16 year old yamal to prime messi, iniestia and xavi, bud, xavi and inestiia would be in the stadium watching barca play at yamal's age. and vini? he wouldn't play in los galacticos because the current madrid he plays for is better. galacticos was overhyped team that only had their stars going for them. the galacticos were such a failure than they won no CL's and 1 la liga in 5 years.

For those who don't get the joke... Henry was at NYRB through the 2014 season, and Grella came in as a winger from 2015-2017. He literally replaced Henry in the lineup. Grella knows damn well his career isn't even in the same time zone as Henry's. Everyone needs to chill out about that exchange. BTW... Henry is right about the quality of US players in MLS now vs 10, 15, or even 20 years ago. The player pool is much deeper now, but (as Grella said) not many of our top players would start for those teams. Those guys may not have been as technically gifted as today's players, but they were tough as nails, and would run through a brick wall for the team. In 2010 Michael Bradley and Landon Donovan were the top to players in the tournament in ground covered/90. Dempsey was right up there with them as well (I think top ten).

Titi is 100% correct. The American players now seem a level below and the #1 issue is the mentality. Donovan and Dempsey's group played with big cajones, pride and zero fear. Believing that you can perform as well as the best and beat anyone is half the battle. Fully agree with Henry. I have never bought that this current generation of USA player is the best ever. They are maybe more technically gifted because they were trained more professionally as kids with the MLS academy system, but previous USMNT teams have far more higher quality players. Yes there are more Americans in bigger European teams than before and the US soccer media have wrongly taken this to mean that they are higher quality than previous generations. This is being caused by more big European clubs being owed my Americans and European clubs realising the commercial value of American players in the USA media market. When Chelsea purchased Pulisic the US TV rights quadrupled for the EPL and this didn’t go unnoticed in the rest of Europe. So big clubs started buying to Americans to boost their value of their US TV rights.
