When I was a teenager, I was body surfing with a couple of my bros, when suddenly I was pulled by a rip ride. I tumbled over and over underneath the strength of the waves when suddenly out of nowhere I felt a strong arm pull me up. It was a lifeguard that saved my life. I will always be grateful to that lifeguard .

When I was a teen my brother taunted me n bullied me calling me a baby because I couldn’t go under water. So I went under to prove him wrong. Somehow ended up in the deep end. I couldn’t touch the bottom n I was constantly sinking fast. Confused I tried to hold my breath for as long as I could n then some more. I tried to fight to get to the surface but couldn’t. I couldn’t swim properly. I started to hallucinate that the water was magic and the water turned into colours n I started to believe that breathing it in would be better then air. A part of me fought for common sense I kept telling myself it’s water not magic. When I could not longer hold my breath and went to give up. Huge hand wrapped around my ankle to knee and I found myself propelled shot straight up out of the water I did breath in water n swallow some before reaching the surface. I was coughing n sick n it burnt like fire n acid in my nasal passage canal throat lungs n stomach. But I was saved. I looked back to see who rescue me. But there was no one around. Except this glowing white light in the water that moved down and across before slowly disappearing altogether, I believe it was God and his angels that saved me that day. Wouldn’t be here today. I know how that feels. The gratefulness nothing can compare. Just I can’t measure up to my saviour.

I come from a town in regional Western Australia. We have a small group of voluntary lifeguards at our main beach. A lot of people enjoy early morning swimming there, knowing they are relatively safe, with these guys watching them. One morning, a guy was attacked by a great white, and a lifesaver (a tiny little woman aswell) jumped into the water, fought the shark off, started dragging the guy back to the beach, and had to fight the shark again as it came back for a second bite. She got him out though. One of his legs was badly damaged, but after a lot of surgery and physical therapy, he was able to walk on it, albeit with nasty scars. If the lifesaver hadn't seen him, he'd probably be dead.

I'll never stop being both shocked and impressed when I watch this show! Shocked by how much bad stuff goes on at the beach, and impressed by these lifeguards who seem able to look around a crowd of hundreds (thousands?) of milling people and see the ONE person among them who is struggling in the waves, or to hear a generic description of some guy in blue swim shorts who is robbing bags on the beach. There's probably 800 blue swim shorts walking on the beach but they quickly hone in on the thief. They handle these thieves really well; they have no power to apprehend people but they always manage to get the thief into the tower to wait for the police. I love this show! I grew up living far inland, and only around swimming pools and thought all lifeguards sat on a tall ladder chair all day not doing much of anything but looking. But these guys are like wind-up creatures who are on the move all day long! They never miss a problem that's starting to develop.

Laughing after almost drowning is a trauma/stress response. It happens with a lot of people who don't fully know what just happened and how slow reality hits them. I did the same thing when I got diagnosed with a medical condition that could be deadly if not treated. I understand getting angry at them for leaving the girl behind but the boys almost drowned as well.

This reminds me of an incident I took as mostly innocent, but now makes me think it was something more sinister. We were in some clear springs in florida, and there was a huge hole that you couldn't see how deep it was. We had been swimming there for a while, occasionally passing over that area. We seen some divers go down the hole, not thinking much of it. Until one of the guys popped up right between my sisters legs. We were the only two people swimming in that area. Not only is the water clear but as a diver you have to come up slowly. No way he didn't see her. We were also 14 at the time. It was super creepy now that I think back on it.

I was taking my girls to a gigantic famous water park and at the hotel in the morning we stopped at the all you can eat buffet and this group of Chinese tourists literally SHOVED my 12 year old daughter out of the way and grabbed WITH THEIR HANDS the last remaining pancakes…a bunch of them, there was over a dozen left. My daughter fell on her bottom and her skirt flew up, one of the men pointed and laughed, saying someone lewd in Chinese because the other men began cackling. My mama bear instincts kicked in and I got between them and her and pushed their plates off pt the side and began to yell at them and telling my son to call the cops. This lady shoved me away and started SCREAMING at me in Chinese so loud that when the cops came, I was in tears trying to explain and they said in was targeting THEM because I didn’t like foreign ‘China people’ and this just made me break down. I explained my story but the cops didn’t want to be accused of anything so they just told me and my children to leave….they got to keep their pancakes and their lovely day. 😢. Don’t ever expect them to help you. They will side with the tourists because they are too afraid of being accused of anything. I’m sorry, but the entire incident has made me cynical and even as I type this I’m tearing up thinking about it and how helpless I was to defend my daughters THIS WAS IN DENVER AT THE HILTON NEXT TO WATER WORLD.
