Hey thanks for watching! A couple of corrections. 1. weaving will not add heat to tyers this is best done with acceleration and braking. 2. I forgot to mention reaching to the side of the bike can also to reach the fuel tap or choke. Though as all new bikes are now fuel injected far fewer bikes have these compeared to a few years ago. Yes, It's legal! Hoodies and T shirts! recklesspromotions.uk/product-category/spicy110/lanesplit/yesitslegal/

spicy110, weaving will heat the tires a bit, as will anything else which utilizes friction. Acceleration and deceleration will do it more quickly, but weaving will do some. The throttle blipping thing nearly ended my biking days before they'd started. Summer 2013 and I finally pass my full bike test and dust off the Bandit I'd had waiting. A few days later, I decide to use it to pick up a parcel a little way away - hop on the motorway and it's nose to tail traffic. So, it's basically my first time filtering, I've been riding all of 2 weeks and I'm out on my Bandit 650. As I'm filtering, traffic starts to pick up to, say, 20-30mph and the two cars in front of me start to converge on each other - "I'm a biker now", I think to myself and decide to give the throttle a good blip to warn them of my presence. Well, to this day I don't really know what happened or what I did - I either didn't depress the clutch, or I slipped, because the next thing I know I'm blowing past the next couple of cars on the back wheel, barely hanging on to the bike. My natural instinct is to grab both brakes, so the bike slams back down and I promptly lock up the front wheel take all the weight off the back and come very close to a high side. It was nothing but dumb luck that I didn't completely stack it, there and then. I promptly slowed down behind a truck in Lane 1, and got some serious abuse from the now-passing cars. My friends now know it as the wheelie-filter.

Good video thanks. May I add to the horn message: - One hoot is considered by the police and other organisations as aggressive. If you need to attract someones attention; the best thing to do is give two short hoots. This says "Pay attention or I am here look out". I have used this a lot; and two hoots is where for once "more is less"! Hope this helps. Andy Chipling P.S. The other reason a biker will bend down and adjust something under the tank is to turn the petrol off. On old bikes we do turn off the petrol; as older bikes can leak from the carburetor if left on.

With regards to filtering - There is section on driving tests called making progres. It's not just allowed to, or legal, it's a requirement. Part of driving is you have to make progress. Failure to make progress would result in a fail. For motorcyclists, making progress includes using the ability to filter. Car drivers that don't like that and actively try to stop another road user, be it in a car or on a bike, from making progress would just be causing an obstruction and that is unlawful. No one thinks it's a good idea to drive slow in the outside lane on a motorway, block a road by parking up adjacent to another car, or in front of someone else's drive way.

You will *NOT* fail your bike test in the UK if you don't filter. You *WILL* fail your bike test if you filter and then cause someone else to change their speed and/or direction. Filtering on your test is, quite frankly, a stupid thing to do.

Please note Part B, 21: Judgement: overtaking/filtering. As an example, if you come up to a junction and there is a bike box at the front of lane. You are expected to filter, if it's safe to do so, to the front of the traffic and enter and wait in that box. It would be considered making progress without undue hessitation, part of awareness and planning, and reading road markings. Of course it's up to the examiner to mark up the sheet but they'd be well within their rights to mark you down for any of those items in that example.

What gets me is that judgement is subjective, which is shaky ground when you're getting examined :( Depends on the instructor I guess.

Interesting as that is one of the things that annoys me, Car drivers leaving the lights on amber and I mean on amber. On a bike I will aim to go at the exact moment it turns green and within 10 feet I am so far ahead of cars I am out your way. But so so many leave on amber before the green even starts to light. This greatly increases the risk of being hit by a red light jumper from the other side and often leave the bike sandwiched between 2 cars. So being early or late here will piss one of us off. Thing is tho the early car is the one breaking the rules not the bike leaving a moment later. A good example of this is at 0:55 in this video here kzitem.info/news/bejne/yn6syZydnWmYlag

But if you can see no one is coming & a junction is up ahead. I'd be on the outside, then if I see a car stopped their. I'd move side to side a little just to make myself more visable. I can 100% understand that car drivers can't tell how fast we are going, but I have to disagree that they can't see us during the day. A bike has roughly the same profile as a human being and you don't see cars regularly plowing through crowds of people (except mustangs). I think its more a matter of the brain eliminating smaller vehicles (than their own, except lorry drivers) from their perception of the road. I've had people look me dead in the eyes as they pull out on me in a car and on a bike.

OEM bike horns - first upgrade any rider should make. Denali Soundbomb or similar. Horns are fitted at the front of the vehicle (even sirens on emergency vehicles) and face forwards for a reason - that's the direction any hazard is likely to be. Exhausts are at the back of the machine and face backwards. The human visual system works on a lot more than just knowing how far apart car headlights are, therefore knowing how far away the car is simply by how far apart the headlights appear to be. We have 2 eyes for depth perception, which is the same thing as being able to work out distance to some object. Stereoscopic range finders use some of that principle - two independent lenses that are adjusted to bring two images of the same object into coincidence, then take the angle between the two lens systems, apply some trigonometry (usually done by the system, much like our eyes and brain do for us) and bingo! You have the distance. Focusing also plays a part. Using the distance between headlights is also unreliable, as buses/coaches/lorries have much bigger spaces between the headlights. Totally agree on the acceleration point. Most non-bikers, especially if they have NEVER ridden a bike, often have no comprehension of how even a 500/600cc can accelerate. As you say, to get a car that accelerates as fast as many bikes, you have to spend LOTS of money! Lots of interesting points, should make for good discussion ;)

Passed by a broken down motorcycle on the way home from just picking up a used R6 from a private seller. I wanted to stop and ask if he was alright, but at the same time I didn't have knowledge or tools to help him even if I wanted to. I didn't know what to do and I just rode by. That ate at my conscience the entire ride home because sometimes all someone needs is just an extra pair of hands - something I can attest to. My justification was: "Oh, I haven't even registered the damn thing yet. What if police came!?", "He could have stolen the bike and title right from me if I pulled over.", "He just ran out of gas, there's a gas station right there." The guy even looked at me as I rev-matched the downshift since the exhaust was loud as hell. Fuck. Needless to say, I gave to a homeless guy at a red light before getting home that day. That was probably selfish of me since looking back at it now, I probably did it due to my conscience being eaten alive. I'm happy I did it nonetheless. But I must say, I still feel guilty about it even now. I'll never do that again, and I hope the guy was okay.

Sometimes people are turning the fuel tap underneath the tank on or off etc if they are reaching down on one side of the fuel tank. Or some bikes such as Harley Davidson frequently have a manual 'compression' release button on the engine on one side. You might see them reach down with one hand - and release compression before attempting to start the bike. Also...in my country and State - going down the middle of two lanes of slow moving or stopped traffic is called 'lane splitting',and is also legal. We only call it 'filtering' when a motorcyclist is rapidly and/or erratically jumping/weaving from lane to lane to get through traffic...and it's illegal. Interesting video...Thanks! =)

one more reason to justify lane filtering is that stopping behind cars in traffic puts considerably more stress on the body of the rider compared to someone just sitting in a car in rush hour traffic. So yeah, it's a possible argument that lane filtering to front instead will put less strain on their body as they have to stand stationary for less time. This straining problem ramps up with the increased weight of your bike.

I was actually in a situation a few months ago where a car driver was right up on my backside with his head lights reflecting off of my right side mirror who just sat there and didnt overtake me dispite having a perfect opportunity to overtake.......until i verbally screamed and i mean screamed "Get the F..k away from me! Back the F..k off!"....next thing i know his headlights where barely seen in my wing mirror. Dont be afraid to shout out if you need to....The car driver will hear you!

I would like to learn to ride a bike, thanks for the info. I think the one that contradicts itself is the filtering, as you say bikers want space which I fully understand, yet when filtering and overtaking on small lanes you are then in the cars space, which I find unsafe and risky in my car, I have my space and then a bike invades it!
@spicy110

This is because you don't ride bikes. You are safer out of the way of cars I.e not between them and people have a habit of rear ending you and on a bike that is a much bigger deal. If done correctly they will be near you for maybe 2 seconds and in doing so also remove themselves from being traffic. It's a win all round, it is also legal and defendable in court.

had an one hour ride today, absolutely lovely and no issues with the cars. Two bicycles though ... tzzz and both elderly ladies, one cut in front of me although she had a huuuge stop sign on the street she was coming from, she was stopped, looking at me and than decided to just, you know, go and the second one, narrow street, parked cars on my side, was coming on the opposite way, a meter and a half from the sidewalk to the point I had to squeeze close to the parked cars on the right. I wonder if a car came instead of me, than what ? Anyhoo, I was going slow in both cases and just amused myself, though I throttle blipped the 1st lady, like she cared ... :)

Thank you for the information. As a car driver it is useful to know how bikers think and why they do some things. As you say if we have a mutual respect for all road users then life on the roads is a lot simpler and safer for all.

It *is* harder to judge a bike's approach speed. Moving laterally across the lane (either by weave or just to the outer edge of the onlookers view of the lane) can massively increase the chance you've been seen, and gives you a bit of room to work with too. 👍

Well said, although I suspect the primary recipient of this content (car drivers) aren't really watching this. If there's one thing I can't stand from the MCY community though is that bikers who act entitled it's legal. I have the same hatred for pedestrians who walk out in the middle of the road and do so without a care in the world because if you hit them you're at fault. I live in Cali, USA, which is the only state which splitting/filtering is legal, and the amount of bikers who act like assholes about it is too high. Like "I'm allowed to split, so FUCK YOU if you don't move over", and they start honking their horn and shit. Yes, filtering and splitting is legal, but it also needs to be done in a safe and responsible manner, if a cop sees you fucking with people they'll pull you over all the same. Sometimes you're filtering along and you come up to 2 cars which are too close to slide between...there's no point in revving to redline at them, no point in honking, you have no right to do either of those, and I hate when people do, just match their speed until the gap opens and slide on through. I love it when people move over for me to allow me to split, feels great, but I shouldn't expect it, and it's wrong to be mad at drivers if they don't move. I hate that shit.

Replace the horn with an air horn... now that gets peoples attention. yeah something better done on a cruiser due to space for it. my vstar i mounted it along the front cage pointed toward the ground... if i use it you have pissed me off... other wise you get the throttle blip.

Another reason a motorcyclist may reach down beneath their tank is to turn off their petcock (fuel line) so that it won't leak gasoline while they're away from their bike.

One of the things you see bikers doing that car drivers don't understand is groping down by the engine in the winter. It's keeping your hands warm on the engine case's. I hate creepers, makes me slow down if I'm not sure what they are doing. Which makes then wait even longer

I don’t think I know any bikers that don’t also drive cars, of course, the opposite is not true, but I bike a lot in town and IME nobody gets too pissed off about me filtering. Although it can be embarrassing slipping up to the front of the queue at the lights and then stalling…. I imagine …

‘Rev-bombing’ is utterly pointless. A driver who isn’t going to hear your horn isn’t going to hear your engine revving, either. In fact, the only thing it does, is remove power from your rear wheel, and increase your reaction time when you need to react to unexpected events on the road.
