Maybe you should RTFB before starting this job. Standard procedure seems to be slightly hone the cylinders, then cool the sleeve in best dry ice. As for the Sleeve Retainer, read the label, most the retainer material is good for less than 250 deg, yes the water temp normally is below that value but the sleeve will normally see 5-600 degrees all day long.

My machine cuts so well that honing would be a downgrade for the surface. I did get it done, and the witness line between the sleeve and cylinder looks really good. Thanks for the view and comment.

You also do not hone for repair sleeves, especially in a hole with a ledge at the bottom.

@@battleaxefabandmachinewell you can to remove the rust, as for the lip at the bottom with a flexi flyer you would feel it and stop. Ain't talking of taking more than the rust off the cylinder walls. Have done several blocks over the years for those antique stuff, like the old Ford 9,2,8N's and believe it or not they have oversized sleeves readily available. Seems as if you bored them out till the sleeve was gone then when that oversized piston wore the block you oversized the block and installed sleeves. My old 2N is like that now, a stock sleeve would fall straight through as it was worn about 0.010 over. NAPA had the overhaul kit on the shelf at the warehouse.

@thomasheer825 the repair sleeve on this is 4.520. The stock bore is 4.33. So it's a decent amount to cut out. There are actually oversized available but the customer wanted to go back stock bore. I have another bore and sleeve coming up. The Ford 5000 was known for thin walls. There are oversized pistons available but it's a risk. He wants top hat sleeves. That will be a fun job

Put the sleeve in the freezer overnight, then put it in, your welcome

No. The moisture that collects on the cold sleeve gets trapped between the cylinder and liner. When rust happens it grows and pushes the sleeve towards the piston causing scoring and failure. I have heated the block up though.

@battleaxfabandmachine how about cleaning the bore first....

@dunk5647 I actually did. Probably off camera. I blew it out with air and wiped with brake clean

How big of a deal is it to sleeve the 3126? Is there enough material to hone it and remove the lip at the top of the cylinder from the piston ring wear if the cylinders are in otherwise good shape? I'm just asking for some people that seem to think it's either impossible or insanely expensive and not worth doing.

It's able to be done. I just did 2 cylinders in a 3126 in a motor home chassis in frame. Bored, sleeved, rebored and honed.
