People throw rice at weddings as a symbol of fertility. We often forget that rice are seeds, and throwing seeds at a newly-married couple is a symbolic gesture of wishing them much luck with having children.

I met Carrie yesterday at Les Mis and I got a hug and a picture which I've been making my friends jealous of today. But it frustrates me that my brain wouldn't let me say what I wanted to. I wanted to tell her how loved she is by her hopefuls and how touching her 'good intentions' video was even for someone who wasn't hurt it was lovely that she put herself out there whilst others wouldn't have! How proud we all are of her and how we know this is just the beginning for her. But no. Instead I manage to stutter how amazing she was and when she gives me a hug I tell her she smells nice and the apologised for sounding creepy. So on the tiny chance she reads this: thank you for saying hello and although I'm just another hopeful's face that won't stand out meeting you is something I'll cherish. Cos you are my big sister and I love you along will all of your other hopefuls. You will go far Carrie and we'll be right behind you! :) xxxxxx

Two points about the pizza thing: 1: round pizzas with a round box/square pizzas with a square box would make it a lot harder to get the pizza out of the box without a special mechanism (which is just more effort) 2: round boxes are quite a lot harder to make because of the surface net, and square nets can be mass produced a lot easier. Hope this helped :)

Orange is named after a royal dynasty named after a celtic god, while an orange is from Sanskrit for the fruit they cultivated. (In many languages oranges are called "chinese apples", apfelsin. The spelling of both words was made the same because of the happy coincidence of both being orange coloured.

But in Spanish both are _naranja_ (although the color can also be referred as _anaranjado_) Do you have the respective Sanskrit and Celtic roots? (There might also be that the Celtic dynasty chose the color of the Sanskrit fruit due to the similarity in their names)
@cassesque
10 жыл бұрын
Oh, no. The Dutch House of Orange was named after the settlement of Orange, which was in turn named after (and is a corruption of) Arausio, a Celtic God. Naranga is from Sanskrit. Both Naranga and Arausio were corrupted by time, and in the 15th Century were assimilated in several languages (including English and French) in to the same word. This is exemplified by the archaic French term 'pomme d'Orange' i.e. 'Apple of Orange', as in the Dutch royal family who had as their unsurprising official colour orange. It's a super convoluted etymology.
@31MidnightSun

Yeah, but English got the word from Norman French and they called oranges "orange apples." I'm still not sure if they're talking about actual apples though, or pomegranates, because oranges, apples, and pomegranates always get flipped around when languages are switched.

I worked a a pizza place when I was in high school. Part of the job was folding pizza boxes, because they're shipped flat to save space. Round boxes would be ridiculous to fold. Some places do offer square pizzas (sometimes this is called 'Sicilian-style'), but pizzas will likely stay round because the pizza pans are round, and because round pizzas are easier to cut quickly.

1. Ask an Etymologist. I suggest Mark Forsyth. 2. Latin and Greek. Also, hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia is not an actual phobia. See the List 25 channel here on KZitem. 3. Ask an Etymologist. I suggest Mark Forsyth. 4. Because you aren't dead... I thought that one would be pretty obvious. 5. Actually, Mark Forsyth has a chapter dedicated to this in his book, "The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll through the Hidden Connections of the English Language. So, again, I suggest Mark Forsyth. 6. Because the definitions of words change throughout their use. People are lazy and people are inarticulate, so they come up with the closest thing they can think of, which is better than just inventing new words. 7. Because we've had years of practice doing that with people who don't understand us even if we do speak the same language. We figure that if enunciation helps people who speak English, it should help those who don't. 8. You think you didn't press it hard enough to begin with. Again, I always found this simple to understand. 9. Ask an Etymologist. I suggest Mark Forsyth. Or just ask a historian who's well versed in weddings, but I'd be willing to bet it has something to do with the gradual corruption of the English language. 10. No, the color orange is called "orange" because it's the same color as an orange. This can be easily verified when you take a look at Greek literature, when they needed a word for the fruit before they needed a word for the color of the fruit. Before they needed a word for the color, it was just red. 11. Instinct, necessity, and uncertainty. Welcome to how science was born. 12. Well, I could come up with several reasons (a circle has more area, so you'd be using more material, for example), but I'd rather not have the last answer take up several paragraphs, so I'll just leave you with one piece of advice for the whole of this video; when in doubt, try to figure out which fields the questions might apply to, then email someone in that field. @Amanda-qt5zz
10 жыл бұрын
Crossark1 Yeah, but a square in a larger scale will still have a larger area. You can't say a coin has larger area than a pizza just for its shape for example. If you can fit a pizza inside that box, you will also be able to fit a circle with the same diameter as the box, inside of the the square box. That leaves the circle having smaller area? Also, the page you're referencing to clearly says "out of two shapes with the same perimeter" which is not the case in this specific question.
@tysonmaniac
10 жыл бұрын
Crossark1 I agree with everything you said other than this, because the perimeter of the box is a non-issue. The point is that the percentage area occupied by a circular pizza of a circular box is lower. Hoever, circular boxes would be stupid and impractical, as would square pizzas.

I think 'fat chance' is sarcastic while 'slim chance' is literal, if you say "slim chance" with the intonation usually applied to fat chance, would one not be implying the chance wasn't slim? Also practice as in a doctor's practice comes from the same root as the word practical, so it's about them actually applying what they know practically to your body/ doing practical things for their job

The color comes from the fruit because the fruits used to be green, but then when the orange variety became the more prevalent type, the color came from it. Before that, they didn't differentiate between red and orange. Sheep because shepherds were notorious for falling asleep on the job. And pressing buttons harder totally works. Carrie, the "pants" question is a bit complicated, but I'll give it a shot. The North American meaning for pants (the one that means trousers) was the original meaning, first appearing in 1835. The British definition didn't come about until 1880, and trousers used to literally come in pairs. Like you would have to put them on separately and then connect them (I wonder if that is also where the idiom "he puts his pants on one leg at a time" comes from, incidentally). I assume the "pair" thing just carried over when the British definition started being used as well. Hope that helps!

Pizzas are made circular as its how the dough is spread evenly, it would take more work to make them square. Similarly the box is made square as it allows the net to be all on one sheet of cardboard, to make a circular box would be more difficult and likely would actually use more cardboard (as its very hard to make card fold in curves) and / or take a lot longer to assemble before use.

Yeah, I'm with you on this, also, if you made the box too similar to the size of the pizza (as in the most efficient in terms of cardboard) it would make it really hard to cut the pizza and take the slices out (think about how you have to put your fingers on the outside of the crust). Also, a circular cardboard box with the strength and ability to keep in the oil or cheese that might leak out would not just be difficult, it would be nigh impossible. Square pizzas are much more doable.

A doctor's practice is called a doctor's practice because they have been given permission (by graduating med school) to practice medicine.

The colour came after the fruit, in fact, the fruit used to be called a norange, but it was misheard as 'an orange'. Before we had the word for orange colour, 'orange' was just known as another shade of red - hence names such as robin redbreasts, red heads and red deer

Whoa that explains why I've got red hair when it's clearly not actually red like a london bus! I'm glad i've got an explanation now for why I can call it red and it make a bit of sense. :P

We're too lazy to manufacture circle boxes, and too lazy to make our pizzas square

In terms of the boxes, it's not necessarily laziness, its just efficiency. Material usage would go down, sure - but the difference in work required for a circle rather than a square box outweighs any benefit a circle box may provide. Plus, as another commenter noted, a lot of pizzas have sauces/dips within the packaging.

Just some comments: 1. Spelling hipopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia in a spelling bee at my school earned me a very cool copy of "The adventures of Tom Sawyer". So yeah, I kinda love that word, even though the meaning is pretty ironic... 2. It's "doctor's practise" because in med school we first learn how the body works and when it's not working and how to fix it almost only theoretically, inside the classroom. After a while, we go to practise everything we've learned (and also learn a lot more ^-^). It's not like we completely ignore what we're doing, hahaha. 3. I love how real you are, Carrie.

I SO need to show this to my significant other! These are the sort of questions that randomly pop into my mind at times and when that happens, I always say to him: "I've got a twelve-year-old-question again..." Makes him laugh everytime. ;) Oh and Hopjes are awesome!!! :)

The funniest thing ever - I'm taking McDonald's chips next time!! I can just imagine it, everyone at a wedding throwing rice/confetti and then one person standing there with large McDonald's chips chucking them at the bride going Congratulations!! :D

The orange thing can actually be answered: the fruit came first. Before the 1500s, the orange colour was referred to as "yellow red" or something. Can be seen in the European Robin for example, whose original name is "redbreast", although their chest is usually more orange-coloured than red!

i think for the pizza thing, they can't make round boxes because it would be more difficult and less practical, which would take up more time and money. But for the square pizza thing, i think it's because pizza makers spin the pizzas to stretch out the dough, which naturally forms a circular shape and they can't really spin it into a square :P

Square boxes allow room to remove the pizza. Surely if it fitted the pizza perfectly it would just be a mess getting it out. That's my theory anyways. Also have you tried making a round box? So much more difficult

I reckon it'd take more cardboard to make a round pizza box than a square one because of all the fiddly flaps to keep it together, and there'd probably be more waste because cardboard isn't manufactured in fiddly shapes, probably in sheets, so a more linear boxy format probably means less scraps that can't be utilised. Square pizzas are fantastic though. Pizza Presto in Reading does them.

Imagine getting a circular pizza out of a circular box. There would be no space for you to actually get the pizza out. Also, square boxes can easily have hinges so you can open and close it. A circle can't. It's also cheaper and easier to ship when using a square box.

hi! the thing about the rice and the wedding i think it comes from a different language, specifically greek! i'm from Greece and the word rice sounds phonetically similar to root. usually when we throw the rice it's accompanied with the phrase "take root". practically it is a linguistic game also dislexya is a greek word. it is composed of 2 words, first means difficult and the second word.
