I think the first and second rule should be generally applied to every course. No matter how competitive the course is, _chill out._ No matter how alone you feel, again, _chill out._ I myself have noticed even during highschool that a lot of people don't have anyone else to hang around with. I do encourage people to find people you can talk to, but you don't have to be friends immediately, acquaintances is just fine. The friend part will take time so don't stress over finding friends - This is actually how I found my own friends who've been nothing but acquaintances the past years.

@@lowkeyayokai Well, I don't know exactly how the original commenter "screwed" their relationship with their classmates, and I'm not an expert on the matter but I'll try to give some insights First, I think that trying to be open with people is really important. Even if you're socially anxious like me, when you're at school you HAVE to at least answer people when they talk to you, and smile if possible. You don't need to start conversations, just be nice if they do. A very easy thing to do is to wave a little to someone you cross path with if you have already been introduced (no need to talk, just aknowledge their presence). Also, always be honest! It's fine if you don't want to go with them to a party or something, they shouldn't like you less because of it (and if they do, they are not worth it). Just say that you really dislike this type of event and wouldn't enjoy yourself there (but thanks for the invite!). They will feel respected because you told them the truth, and it won't affect badly your relationship. Lastly, since we are talking about work, you have to be reliable, and do the part of your work. You gotta be ready to make compromises.

As someone who is 36 and has had time to learn some life lessons, yeah school is very important, and getting good grades is important, but what is more important is learning what you are capable of and learning your limits. Learning your strengths and your boundaries. What good are you going to be if you graduate with a degree but are mentally completely unstable and unable to keep a job? Or you pushed yourself to do good in a field that didn’t come naturally to you and now you’re stuck there for your entire career. University is an incredible experience. But the education is only one part of it. The other parts are learning to live independently, learning to self regulate and discipline yourself and set limits. It’s about your interpersonal relationships and how well you work and live with others. It’s about letting yourself be yourself but also learning that not everyone is nice or supportive or safe or has good motives but also that there are amazing people and finding friendships and work relationships that will last lifetimes. Don’t ruin your own college experience. I went back again as an older adult because I didn’t fully understand myself for my first degree and I did 10000x better educationally the second time but I didn’t socialize or live on campus. Also, don’t waste your time, money or anyone else’s if college isn’t for you. It might disappoint someone but you’re old enough to go out on your own. It would hurt them and you much more if you denied them and yourself the truth for 4+ years. Learning to be honest and accept disappointment and discomfort from the reactions of other people is a tough adult life lesson but will serve you well. And last of all, you’ll be ok, I promise. Everything will be ok. It might not seem like it now. There were times I was so upset I thought my life would be over or I wanted it to be. Looking back I can see that most of it was because of how I reacted or internalized things and that’s ok. I’m a stranger on the internet but I promise you that it will turn out ok because it has to. It might not be today or tomorrow but you will be ok. ❤

Something I learned while applying for schools, just from touring mostly, Sheridan is great if you wanna work for a big animation studio, if you plan to get more experimental and test the boundaries of animation a little more, then look elsewhere Sheridan is great ofc, but know what ur looking for. Also, if Sheridan is your dream school, apply to their art fundamentals 1 year program, it’s a great backup if you don’t get into a bachelor program and you get access to the professors n stuff to critique you on ur portfolio. You don’t get a guaranteed acceptance just cuz you did fundamentals at Sheridan, but you’ll get resources to help you plenty. I applied for Sheridan’s bachelor of animation program and didn’t get in, but I DID get into their fundamentals program. Decided to go to this other school that feels like a better fit for myself, but still. My Sheridan application portfolio was scored 55/100 and they still accepted me for art fundamentals. You literally don’t need to submit a portfolio for fundamentals regardless too Also fundamentals accepts like waaaay more students than any of the bachelor programs so you’ve got a higher chance of getting into it I’m peddling what a student there who did fundamentals her first year told me, I might not have all the details right lol

I used to hear every now and then that art school can be competitive.... like bestie, when?! We're all caffine addicts who all most likely have our own mental struggles, and everyone has a fandom they hyperfixate and half of us just wanna make our dnd characters for finals. Art school isnt competitive, but the industry is. School is networking and making an impression so people can remember you in the future and wanna work with or put in a good word for you. Also: ArtStation is a good place to promote your art for future hiring teams, as ive heard from professionals that have spoken at our school

Take a business class, become buddies with business majors, intern whenever you can, start a youtube channel streaming your art. Art is a contractor/gig career. You are gonna be in debt so you might as well start laying the ground work to get yourself out of it. Finally, it does not matter where you go to school to learn art. We all end up in the same labor pool anyway and employers don't care where you went, they care what you can do.

Animator here. Went to college in Atlanta, graduated Cum Laude, and am now on a small animation team that is made up of mostly old alumni. The best advice I can give is to treat college like a job interview. It's not about the grades or even the degree, honestly outside of school no one cares. We care if you know how to do the job and follow directions. What that means is, yes you turned in your assignment and got a passing grade, but you did it last minute and didn't exactly follow instructions. You had time to do something better or more interesting, and you know you could but who cares? There was other, more fun stuff to do. It's turned in and the grade is good. Yeah the teacher didn't see that, but your classmates did. And when they have to pick someone to be on their team when a job opens up, best believe they are going to pick the person that gave it their all and followed instructions. Like she says the industry is small. Don't be known as the person who leaves things to last minute or can't get along with others in group projects. I have had to be the one to shut people out of opportunities based on behavior in school, it didn't feel good, but I was not going to risk the project over their bad habits.

For REAL I don’t know where this competitiveness surfaced from and even I used to do that. Students bragging about how they got zero sleep that night for a project they could have done a week before or slowly over the given time is really toxic. I used to get nosebleeds from not properly sleeping for days on ends and think it was cool and okay. NO KIDS. Get at least 6 hours to barely function the next day or maybe… actually GO FOR A FULL 8 HOURS. Trust me, our bodies are healthy, 1 day of good rest completely resets our brains, you would actually feel way better after sleeping correctly and have your brain work better because idk… IT HAD PROPER REST. Plus sleeping irregularly actually gains you some weight, mainly because our bodies function on a schedule. U wale up at 8? Your body will act accordingly. But if you wake up at 5 and then the next day it is 12pm and then the other is 4am, your body won’t match up leading you to unhealthy eating, stress and horrible moods. All in all, do your work properly and SLEEP.

Also, not every art school is equal. If you went to some unknown design college that only teaches absolute basics of print design, then it's absolutely useless for animation / motion design industry. And if there are no good animation institutions in your country, then self-educate yourself and build a good portfolio.

Yeah I’m just gonna say, pulling all nighters isn’t a flex. You need sleep, especially when you have school the next day. Sleep is way more important than trying to pull all nighters, only to feel inferior to someone else because they “put in more effort” by not sleeping and only studying all the time. Just go one step at a time, don’t rush yourself. Make friends, make it fun, and take care of yourself. Those are pretty important too :)

hey! Regardless you will need a portfolio, but you don't need to go to school to create one. There are plenty of sources online on what schools look for in portfolios (including the specific schools websites) so look for tutorials on the things they want included. Still lifes, anatomy, portraits, perspective work, etc are often liked depending on what you are going for. It's a lot of work but it definitely is possible, keep going!
